Dude I went on Mr Toad at Disneyland when I was like super young and I was not prepared for crashing into the train and going to hell
The_Hoagie Saaame 😶
I don't think any of us who went as kids were ready for that and slight trauma ensued
Phillip Miller Even now I get very uncomfortable going and I’m 25 lol, I feel like I’m being irrational about it but that ride always gets me anxious
My sister loved it, but I was terrified.
The_Hoagie me either. I cried
man the story-line between stitch and yester is getting interesting.
Orange is the new Stitch
Yep
About yester his name is mark!
What can I say, we have a very complicated relationship...
I had no idea what on earth was going on and wanted to skip it a lot more than the short ad for NordVPN.
You can spot my wife and I in a few of the still images. We are the ones wearing the Save Mr. Toad shirts with a Haunted Mansion style tombstone on the back. The epitaph reads "Here Lies Dear Old Mr. Toad. He Hit Some Pooh on The Road." The closing of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride at WDW's Magic Kingdom was a sad day for me. Our family first visited WDW shortly after it opened. I was ten years old and Mr Toad's Wild Ride made quite an impression on me. That last day for the ride was bizarre. We could see and sense Disney's security all around us and the feeling of sadness among Toad's fans was palpable.
Thanks for sharing your memories! I imagine it was a pretty surreal experience that’s truly unique to Toads closure compared to others.
I heard sometime on that day, a kid threw a Pooh plush into the chicken coop during the ride!
“Grim” would be a better term.
@JustJoseph 🎩 • 101y ago I figure the design on the protestors' shirts may have inspired that particular gravestone.
Actually surprised the Headless Horseman was never turned into a ride, it was a much more successful short.
Yeah, but WatW had more visually interesting set pieces for a dark ride. What does Sleepy Hollow have? A school house, a Halloween party, and getting chased through the woods until a Jack-o'-lantern burns you alive.
I was terrified of the Headless Horseman when I was a kid.
Yeah, and the story of this ride would fit much more for that short. Think about it! A crazy chase that ends with you dying, and since Ichabod was a golddigger, ending up in hell seems rather appropriate. That's my one problem with this ride. Did Toad really deserve this fate? Yes, he can be inconsiderate, and obsessive, but he's still honest and tries to do the right thing. I guess it just depends on your definition of morality.
I love that movie
It would’ve been fantastic if they made it
Never thought id see the day where a group of people told Pooh to go to hell
Yeah, seriously. I love Mr. Toad, but I also like the Winnie the Pooh ride. Maybe it's because Pooh's one of my favorite Disney characters.
Kyle Morello I agree, they could of expand the park and put Winnie the Pooh ride somewhere else and still kept Mr. Toad. But sadly today kids probably never heard of Mr.Toad. I never saw the movie as well, I might have when I was a baby but I have to think long and hard that I did watch the movie. But I would love to go to the ride, it looks so fun. But seriously, are these people sick, why would you say Pooh go to hell. That is immature and just sick. It’s just going to make Disney not do it and listen.
No it's "heck" according to this guy.
@@puppyangel4346 or you can just go to Disneyland and ride both... 👀
Grey K There you go. That’s the correct way of doing it instead of protesting about it.
Another one I knew you might do soon. Though here's a fun fact: When Mr. Toad got replaced by Winnie the Pooh, it's a whole lot of irony since the authors of the books, A.A.Milne, and Kenneth Grahame were close friends, and in fact had the same illustrator, Ernest H Shephard.
Poetically ironic.
At least they knew who to turn to in bringing their creations to life. E. H. Shephard did wonders for both Pooh and Toad!
@@ChristopherSobieniak Yep.
That's adorable!
@@ChristopherSobieniak do you know galya peeva she was still saved Disney company class starts at Disney movies and Disneyland hotel room I just I want Hippocampus for Christmas movie and the kids Disney company would be there in
My favorite Mr. Toad experience was when my brother was about ten and I was a teenager. Our family had early admission for Disneyland one morning of our trip, so I took my brother over to Mr. Toad's Wild Ride immediately. We were the first on the ride, and the cast members let us on and sent us on our way. Almost right away, we realized that they hadn't yet turned on the sound. So my brother and I were alone on the silent ride, listening to the set pieces clack. It truly did feel like hell at the end. 10/10, absolutely recommend
My wife and I rode Space Mountain many years ago and there were teenagers in the car ahead of us. Their arms and legs were hanging all out of the car during the chain lift. The automatic "keep all hands and feet inside the car" warning was repeated several times, then a real human repeated it much more sternly. Still no action from the teens. The ride stopped, lights came on and security appeared from nowhere and yanked the kids out. After about a 10 minute delay, we were finally sent, but with the lights still on. You know those steel bars that seem really close on some of the turns and drops? They ARE really close! I don't recommend putting your arms up on that ride. Since we had to ride it with the lights on, they whooshed us straight back to the front of the line for an immediate re-ride with the lights off!
@@jagzrule1 so glad they payed attention and watched to make sure. Stupid teens being stupid ugh, they could a died
If you want context stitch stole marks Mickey book when he was investigating Mickey's Toontown and ran for the hills then went on a carriage and sang his song you heard in the beginning of the episode
Dude that is so awesome. What a morbid treat. I've rode it repeatedly and can't believe Peter Pan was so occupied. It's physically harsher and the story is intense and relatable. Drunk driving Mr. toad getting caught then sentenced, hit by a train, then ends in hell. It's so dope and should be realized and ridden by all!
@@jay5527He isn’t drunk, just a reckless driver.
a sleepy hollow dark ride sounds like it would've been really cool...
It would be awesome now and perhaps even in the 80s probably not in the 50 and 60s. A shame that a modern Sleepy Hallow now wouldn't fare to well with the number of My god think of the children whiners.

Poor Mr. Toad, he went and croaked.
Poor Mr. Toad, by Pooh he was chocked.
Haunted Mansion reference!
Bryce McKenzie true
His set was amazing and the story was cool,
But greed and money made Disney a tool.
I will never understand why things are closed in the Magic Kingdom just to clear room for a new attraction..
Unlike the Anaheim park, Florida is BLESSED WITH ALMOST UNLIMITED ROOM...why they insist on closing popular rides when they can JUST EXPAND I just don’t get, especially since the park gets a Significantly larger attendance than even Disneyland, they can afford the extra attractions
* COUGH * * COUGH * the great movie ride * COUGH * * COUGH *
Probably because it's cheaper and easier to close a ride down and replace it with another than expanding. Expansion means that you have to landscape the new section, pave it, add planters, lay in new plumbing and electric lines, etc. A lot of effort for just one ride, effort better saved for adding a new land or expanding an existing one. Plus, there's the fact that adding a new ride to an expanded area would also mean that unless the land actually directly abuts the unused area and not backstage facilities of some kind, the backstage facilities would have to be moved too, otherwise the new ride might not sit directly in the land it's supposed to be in.
And with Disney World getting more and more crowded year after year, they SHOULD be expanding to accommodate the growing attendance.
They should tear down galaxy's edge and restore old rides there. All that money on building it was wasted. No one likes it.
@@TheItachiIshtar it's been more than half empty this summer.
"Parents complained about it scaring children"
They die and go to Hell, I mean, Heck, I would HOPE they're scared xD
For real though, I was 4 or 5 years old when I went on the ride in Disneyland and it scared the crap out of me! But the adults had fun so 😂
Strangely enough, because I was a kid who was scared of EVERYTHING, my parents never complained to staff about rides or stuff scaring me. They just... ignored my quiet crying for the most part. lol
Edit- And, when I went back a few years later a little older and less terrified, those rides that had previously scared me became wonderful personal tests of courage!
Looking at you KAREN.
Meanwhile my mom likes to remind me that Hell scared the pants off me.
Thanks Mom
I cried for God to save me and I wasn't a sinner. My parents laughed because it was fake, but I thought faith had abandoned me at that point.
Thank you for this. I'm the taller kid at 4:44 entering the ride. I did a Disneyland commercial back in the 80s. Great to see this footage! Thank you!
"The only Disneyland ride that would take you to Heck and back."
That should be the ride's motto, if it ever had...
Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride is a wild ride but it’s not the wildest ride in the wilderness
👏👏👏

Michael Eisner I agree...
*hangs onto his hat & glasses*
Yeah though he wasn’t the best Disney hasn’t been making any attractions with original ideas it’s sad 😔
You and DefunctLand are such comfort viewing for me. It's hard not to be impatient but then I remember that you do this for free. Thanks for helping me manage the constant stress of my life with fun, unusual knowledge.
As of now there is no home video evidence of the original 1955 version of mr. Toad's wild Ride, except for some photos, 8mm souvenir film, and of course the movie 40 pounds of trouble.
I wouldn't doubt fans trying to film inside the ride with 8mm or 16mm home movie cameras probably wouldn't have gotten good shots given the poor lighting involved. Those cameras needed a good deal of light to work. If you see a lot of early videotaped ride sequences from the 80's, you'll not how the lighting still wasn't quite as good with those cameras as they may be today.
@@atsmithson They just didn't. I'm sure people then we're smart to know the lighting would be terrible to start with so nobody brought their cameras through the place. Don't forget the average home movie film only lasted a few minutes per roll as well, and not everyone may've had more than a few to go around.
@@ChristopherSobieniak what does the 1955 ride audio sound like?

I remember being very, very young, in the mid ‘80s, in line for this ride for HOURS due to technical difficulties, and our family befriended a British family ahead of us in line. I got a crush on one of their daughters and we had a nice conversation while we waited, seemingly forever. The ride was fun, as was the Peter Pan ride that ultimately replaced it.
But I’ll always think of that British family and the insanely long wait time whenever I think of this ride.
That's so sweet. I love memories like that.
@@katelynbrown98 Thanks! :) Yeah, me too. Memories like that have a lovely way of staying with us.
All of the people posting about how you're sad that you never got to ride it: don't fret. You can still ride Mr Toad's Wild Ride at Disneyland in California.
At least that's still there.
I never got to personally ride Magic Kingdom's versions, and while the updated Disneyland version still exists, I'm still bitter I'll never get to experience either side...nor MK's Snow White for that matter. Bah humbug.
Yeah that's true. I know that's still there too. I love it a bunch!
Alexandre Phaneuf élève They never left!
Yes it does!
This was the first Disneyland ride I ever went on. I was 3 years old and it made me cry.
Snow deserved more attention. At least they replaced Toad with another ride, they replaced Snow with a empty building.
The destruction of Snow White for a meet and greet has been the absolute worst
Magic Kingdom has enough meet and greets! They could’ve just refurbish the ride with new effects!
It's thankfully still in Disneyland Paris. Not sure if it's anywhere else. But hopefully so.
@@pierrebegley2746 in Disneyland California we still have the Snow White ride, it’s just been changed from Snow White’s Scary Adventures to Snow White’s Enchanted Wish
Yeah I fought hard for that ride.
I went on it in 2001 and 2006. I've never seen the movie, but I know how she trusts strangers with free food. I got to meet Snow and the queen in 2001. I asked Snow if she still had that brown dress from the start of the ride. I really liked that dress for some reason. And I asked the queen how she went back to normal after the dwarfs pushed her off the cliff as an ugly hag.

Marry Poppins would have been a fun ride. I bet it would have staid up too and remained popular. Maybe gotten a revamp for Poppins Returns. Don't know if the other options would have lasted.
I went on the Mr Toad ride at Magic Kingdom. One of few we road twice I remember as a Kid thinking the Track A and Track B thing happened because I was in full control of the vehicle. I thought I was struggling with difficult controls, choosing a path and avoiding obstacles.
I remember being convinced that because of the car and the Weasels that the Mr Toad replacement was Who Framed Rodger Rabbit.

I only watched The Wind in the Willows animated movie for the first time a few years ago, after growing up with the ride at Disneyland. I was shocked that Mr. Toad never gets flattened by a train and goes to Hell in the film. Why did they make that choice for the ride?
That plug at the end to Nord was so damn smooth
Toad is one of my favorite rides at Disneyland. It still scares me til this day
Fantastic job on this video and a beautiful tribute to the original dark ride! Very enchanting and surreal. This was one of my favorite rides at Disneyland when I visited there years ago! Truly a unique experience and overall story!
Mr. Toad is my favorite ride in Fantasyland. Recently got to go on the ride again and all the nostalgia just came back
I love Mr. Toad's Wild Ride at Disneyland (I was too young to ride it at WDW) and I've always been fascinated with the history of both versions -- so glad you made this video covering the whole thing!!
My first time at Disney, i was so excited to ride Mr Toad, only to be told that they had closed the ride a week before. I was one truly disappointed little girl. Thank you for showing me what it looked like!
The Magic Kingdom Wild Ride was one of my mom's favorites when she went as a little girl. She didn't keep up with the media buzz surrounding its closure, so you can imagine her disappointment when our family went to Disney World in '06 and found it was no longer there.

I love that this ride is so popular, because there isn't a big Mr Toad/Wind in the Willows fandom out there keeping it going, it's just an awesome ride. I'd still go on it as an older kid, one of the things you go to Magic Kingdom for. It's a just a descent into madness that ends in possibly jail but always hell. How many Disney rides freaking kill you and send you to hell?
At least it wasn't the Headless Horseman who stole Toad's spotlight.
Tbh, most people these days mostly remember this film for The Sleepy Hollow segment and apparently that seems to be the segment EVERYONE tends to like positively than the Wind in the Willows segment due to the darker themes and the Headless Horseman, much like how The Mickey and the Beanstalk segment from Fun and Fancy Free was well known instead of Bongo.
@@EChacon As much as I love Mr. Toad and his wild and wacky antics.....the Headless Horseman had freaking Bing Crosby. How was he supposed to compete with that?
@@IWasaTeenageTeenWolf Like I said before MOST people only remember this movie for the Sleepy Hollow segment due to the dark themes, the Headless Horseman and Bing Crosby doing the singing and narration just like how many people only remember and talk about Fun and Fancy Free for the Mickey and the Beanstalk segment.
@@EChacon Maybe for those who have actually seen the movie, but for everyone else (which I assume is most people), I'd argue it's the opposite. Disney has done a good job of making sure Mr Toad hasn't been forgotten thanks to not only this dark ride but also cameos in stuff like Who Framed Roger Rabbit and House of Mouse. Meanwhile, Sleepy Hollow is a lot more difficult to market since the most memorable part of the short is a guy being chased through a forest to his death, not to mention there are other adaptations competing for its attention (such as the Tim Burton movie and the episode of Wishbone, the latter of which was how I was introduced to the tale)
@@otaking3582 To each their own. But as I said before, EVERYONE tends react positively on the Sleepy Hollow segment than the Wind in the Willows segment from the movie due to the darker themes, the Headless Horseman, and Bing Crosby's singing and narration on this short, much like how The Mickey and the Beanstalk segment from Fun and Fancy Free was more well known than of Bongo.
Plus during the 70th anniversary of the film only released a CD audio book of Disney's Sleepy Hollow.
I blame the weasels and their crooked contract.
Apparently Owl has a crooked contract too, if you know what I mean.
My family participated in a few weekly “Toad-in”s when I was little, a lot of the people in those photos are my parents’ friends. (IRC chat rooms also played a sizeable part in spreading the word and organizing protests.)
Then I grew up and I ended up working at Snow White’s Scary Adventures on the day it closed and seeing the other side of things. (There were a handful of protesters leading up to it, but day-of, it was mostly just a large crowd of people who spent the day just riding it over and over, including an autistic little boy who had ridden it thousands of times because it was his favorite ride.)
I know Ben's story! My favorite ride as an autistic girl was Space Mountain.
I won’t lie.... I wish we had got to experience a Sleepy Hollow ride. That short always terrified me as a kid and I can only imagine given the Disney level of detail in their attractions just how immersive and spooky it would’ve been.

This video brought back so many memories! As a child, we often visited my great-aunt in Lake Wales, and went to Disney World while we were there. Mr. Toad was one of my favorite rides. You should do this about Herbie the Love Bug.
The Disney company had plans to make a ride based on The Love Bug and Herbie Rides Again.
One of my greatest disappointments in visiting WDW (from the west coast) back in the day was that the two-track Toad attraction was already closed. THANK YOU for preserving the history of an almost-memory.
My first few rides on _Mr. Toad's Wild Ride_ were just fun, but a couple of years later, I found the train thing to be scary and would have to close my eyes. It wasn't until I looked for the effect (the light of the "train" had turned off and I could see that it was just a light hanging from a track in the ceiling as we went by) that I was comfortable with that part again. This simple effect was very well done. All-in-all I really enjoyed the ride (track B I felt was much better than track A) and I do miss it. I'll have to see about getting myself back to Disneyland (been there all of one time).
I guess I should mention that all of my experience was in Walt Disney World.

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride was probably my favorite ride .
Great video, as always. That train scene always had me ducking, when I was a kid. It's a pretty good effect.
I have fond memories of this ride as a kid at both parks so it was with great excitement that I had the chance to take my then 2 year old son on it at Disneyland. Turned out to be the only ride he cried on 🤷♂. Oh well, he doesn't remember it anyways and as my personal favorite Disney dark ride it was amazing to experience it again. My last time had been MK's version back in 1989.

My dad said this was his favorite ride of all time, the train was his favorite part, he lights up when he talks about it. Sad to see it go before I got to go on it.
WDW Magic Kingdom is low in the "classic" dark ride department these days. Peter Pan and Pooh are the only "classic" dark rides remaining. Little Mermaid doesn't count for this because it's in a totally different style. In my opinion, they need to bring back a reimagined version of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride (they could do so much with this idea) and maybe one other (Alice in Wonderland, Pinocchio, Sleeping Beauty, etc...). I think having at least 3 or 4 dark rides anchored in Disney's ultimate classic films is really what makes the Magic Kingdom or Disneyland park "magical."
YOUR INTRO ARE CRAZY AND YOUR MAIN INTRO ALWAYS REMINDS OF THE 80S POP MOVIE BILLIE JEAN.
I rode this when I was in second grade and loved it. I was also obsessed with the wind in the willows at that time.
My family has not stepped foot in ToonTown since they got rid of Mr Toads wild ride. We skipped it over completely.
It's a shame that they didn't wait a few more years to adapt Wind in the Willows--if they'd done it in the fifties, when the animation division was in full swing again, they could have done a longer version focusing on the entire novel and made it a Brit-kid-lit trifecta along with Alice and Peter Pan. (This is one live-action adaptation I'd love to see--with a style very different from The Lion King. One that, y'know, will actually ALLOW for the animals to have actual FACIAL EXPRESSIONS.)
It would certainly work today if they followed it just as we think.
Toad is such a huge part of my childhood. It was the first ever Disney movie I saw and I always wanted to go on Mr Toad’s Wild Ride but I haven’t been able to get to Disneyland or The Magic Kingdom since they’re so far away from me 😢

President Pooh is the reason Mr. Toad is gone....China is all over the place
Are you really Kim Jong-Un?
(I'm sorry I just want to know to be sure)
Juliana Esposito
Yeah he is. You can spot him in many youtube comment sections. He is about the only one in North Korea with access to the internet

Kim Jong-un SHUT IT!
I remember riding this as a kid. I’m sad it’s gone!
Bruh that intro really got me in my feelings for Stitch
I worked at Disney World and rode Mr Toad’s wild ride on its last day.
i was obsessed with Mr. Toad as a kid, i’d watch the vhs over and over. i don’t remember much about the trip to Disney when i was four, but when i went back 20 years later i screamed and hollered and flipped the bird at the judge. definitely my favourite ride aside from Indiana Jones.
I rode both Disneyland and WDW, the latter, many times. I always found it stressful
I've heard so much about Mr. Toad' s Ride and the film with the fiddle playing and fast driving Toad. Another informative and entertaining video. Keep it up!
One of my favorite rides!! Sad it’s gone
Finally the Saga comes to a Close
Your description of the ride is fantastic, but listeners may not grasp just HOW chaotic the ride was: riding Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride for the first time as a world-weary, cynical 10-year-old - who’d been everywhere, seen everything, and considered himself too cool for kiddy storybook animation - I was convinced, at every screeching turn, that the ride was malfunctioning and I was a moment away from certain death! Simply awesome.

Mr toads wild ride was always my favorite growing up.
