I am so jealous. Both my bird's hate scritches, unlike my first bird who was a softie for it. I wish I could condition it but they hate my fingers coming near even if slow
Oo yea, something tells me my new budgie will be a big scritch fan. This budgie came to be completely wild just 4 days ago (last night was his third night here) and he is trying to get me to do head scritches while I was trying to get him to learn how to step up. I came to this video immediately afterward, as I just kinda massaged with my fingertips wherever he wanted me to, but wanted to confirm that I wasn't doing anything wrong. It's so funny how the budgie came out of the cage for the first time today, yet immediately went to head scritches before even learning how to properly step up lol. He is also scared of my other two budgies, so I'm the "main flock" I guess (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's cute!). I can't wait until he is fully trained and trusts me completely :)
Soooo helpful for me! Thank you! I have a baby Green Cheek that is finally trusting in me enough to give scritches on his head, and I can tell he likes it when he fluffs up and closes his eyes, but I also didn't want to do it too aggressively in areas with sheathed pin feathers. I appreciate your detailed video on this, and other subjects. Thanks again!
After 6 months my gcc FINALLY let me scritch him!! I never thought it would be possible, especially since the breeder advised me to wear gloves when handling him (he bites REALLY hard). Never would have made it without this video, thank youuu!!!

My bird likes to be pet like a cat and will snuggle into my hand. I've only had him almost a month and I've pretty much tamed him within the first week or so becouse he was hand raised.
it's so cute when they come up and snuggle into a hand... but remember what Courtney said about petting them "in the wrong places". it's a lot like flirting with them, and can make them frustrated, and look for other ways to... "relieve their interest"... not to mention, becoming upset with YOU for being a tease, which can lead to major behavior problems.
I absolutely love your bird room! I like that you explain why scratch only on their head and neck. When I was owned by a bird they enjoyed it when I helped to preen their heads. They also liked it when I just rubbed their heads. Great tips.
My lovebird associates the motion you would make to scritch them with me feeding him, so I need to find a way for him to see the difference there. Any suggestions?
Our funny African Grey sometimes wants head and neck scratches for over an hour. Since we are home all the time now, I let him start to play, which is his signal that he has had enough, before I stop. Any opinions on setting a time limit, or developing a signal or word to him to let him know that the session will end soon?
Could anyone give me some advice? My bird was a rescue so he was never used to hands, it’s been a week and he’s eating from my hand and runs up to me when he’s outside the cage, I’m currently training him how to step up. But the thing is he won’t let me touch him, he’s scared of hands because he was never handled by them. So he will bite or run away if a even try to touch his back or head, of course I’m not forcing him at all. So any advice on how I can get him used to my hand?
My 3 month old parrotlet will puff up and tilt her head for scratches, but sometimes make little grumbling noises that sound a bit angry but she doesn't pull away or unfluff her head. What could this mean? She has no pin feathers at the moment so I dont think it's hurting her.
Our african grey is the same way - and if he's in the cage he'll smush his head against the bars the second he sees us approach. We'll also give his beak a little 'boop' with our fingertip... so now he's learned how to mimic the 'boop' sound if he wants scritches.
Do you have any advice on how to deal with a scared bird? I have a female cocktail for 2 months and a half. And she is scared of anyone that comes close to her.
My budgies don’t exactly allow me to scritch them because they just bite me whenever I put my hand near their heads. They like me enough, but they just don’t enjoy it ;(
unrelated but... im very curious about the current toys/perches you have in your bird room? can you maybe do a bird room tour/stuff i have in my birdroom 2020? thanks! im dumb... you already did so, i will go watch that!
My green cheek conure absolutely loves scritches. She nudges my hand all the time to do it. She will sit on my chest and actually fall asleep when I do it.
Does anyone know a good place to purchase a Parrotet? I have a 4 foot wide, by 5 foot tall cage and it is all set up with rope perches, natural wood perches, and TONS of preening and foraging toys. Please help.
I'm definitely not an expert, but general advice is to first check local bird shelters, and if they don't have any, try a breeder. And try to pick a bird that you really connect with, and not just for color.

My parrots don't let me touch themselves it's been 2 months since I bought them......they learned how to do stepping and spins and are also comfortable with my presence, yet after so much they don't allow me to touch them. My cockatiel ADORES getting scritches. I was just massaging his cheeks and he put his head down and slowly closed his eyes. I was also looking for those little casings on the new feathers growing in.
The fact that birds are so complicated that you can't touch them in certain places really just drives the fact that they are NOT beginner pets and should never be given to a young child

I recommend touching them on the beak real gently for a start! You should take them out of the cage first as this worked for my cockatiel lucky!
Maybe just spend time with them, and give them food, (hand fed) relate your hand with food and as a friend, then again, after a few weeks. Try again
Unlucky my birb bonks her head on the floor as soon as I bring my hand in front of them and it’s absolutely adorable
I started with the stem from a millet spray. Fingers later.
My cockatiel, Comet, LOVES scritches. I've had him one month, and he loves me so much already. :)
