Love this so much! I’m 52 and will run my first one in Oct 2022 in Grandbury Texas. Part of the process is losing more weight. I’ve never been an athlete on any level so this is a massive step for me! Appreciate you both and thoughts and you guys are awesome!!
Wow, that is really inspiring! I hope you do really well on your race. My parents just recently did their first race too in their early 60s. They felt like it was a great motivator to get into better shape too and had an incredible time doing a Sprint. Let us know how your race goes, we'd love to hear how it goes!

This vid earned my sub! I'm 43 with two boys. 18 and 10. I'm overweight probably 60lbs. I have bad shoulders and knees from years of electrical work. Stress in the last 2 years has been rough. But we all 3 signed up 2 nights ago for our first Spartan. I'm hoping to get in shape in the next 6 months enough to complete. This video put a lot of my concerns to rest. It was quite informative and helpful. Thanks!
Hey dude - three years ago I was 304lbs, nowadays I’m 226lbs. I’ve done a few 5-7km obstacle course races here in Scotland in the last year or so and am now working up to a 21km race next January, also got a 10km in September. I’ve had problems with calf injuries, a pretty bad ankle injury, but be largely consistent (being good 95% of the time is good enough) and have a goal to work towards and you’ll get there. I see you posted this a year ago - how are you getting on? Hope all is good 👍💪
@Matt-yw8tj Well, about 3 weeks before the spartan race, I ended up with A bad plantar faciitis injury from running and trying to get in shape for it. We still went! My young son was in the kids and my oldest son ran right with me. It was very difficult, more than what I expected. I wasn't able to complete a lot of the obstacles. But we completed and got our medals! Was very proud of us! Since then I've been battling this foot injury and it has really slowed me down in working out and I've not lost much more weight, unfortunately. But I've been trying to cut carbs and eat more protein. Good luck on your big race, just be sure to keep stretching the calfskin so you don't get this miserable faciitis!
I LOVE THIS!!! My husband and I are the same--we've talked about a trifecta for years and 2022 is the year we're finally done talking and actually DOING the dang thing. We did our Sprint in Charlotte and are hitting the Super in Colorado on Saturday. Thanks for making this video! So inspiring. :)
Thank you so much for your very motivating and supportive approach - it helped me to stress out less. In two days I am going for my first Spartan and I am very nervous about it. Now I found out I can take it as fun and just enjoy it.
thanks to the both of you for sharing your experience with us, not a boring moment, appropriate for eating popcorn while watching, to compare this to ASL means hard work and determination pays off in the end, and having a goal for yourself as the both of you have demonstrated.
Thanks, I’m glad that you enjoyed it, hard work and determination surly are crucial components to learning ASL and goals are a great way to keep yourself motivated in the long run
Yeah, for sure, during our last SPRINT in Pala, there was a man doing the race on walking sticks and he had a friend with him to help him with the hills and a couple of the obstacles. I thought that was really inspirational
The biggest tip for me is try and improve your grip strength. practice hanging off things, chin up bars, outdoor climbing frames, what ever you can. You see people do it and it looks easy, but if your quite big like me it's hard to hold your own weight for a long time.
Definitely loved this . Seeing you both work together and push each other , is absolutely amazing 😊 I shall be doing my first Spartan race EVER, this year in LA, and you guys have brought confidence and peace of mind to me. Thank you❣️!!!
Thanks! These races are certainly a lot of fun to do as a couple. We hope you enjoy your first race in LA, have a great time and let us know how it goes 👍
Thank you for this video! It answered so many questions for me. I’m not sure about the body strength challenges but I’m going to start training harder and give it my best. I’m excited!
Thank you, these are wonderful tips! I’ll definitely be bringing lots of mustard for my upcoming race! And definitely bring gloves to prevent those raw hands/rope burns. You guys made the race look so fun. I’m starting to get excited rather than nervous now!
Looks like grip strength endurance, grip strength endurance, grip strength endurance. Oh, if you don’t walk it, running. Know your obstacles and technique. Excited to try this.
Thank you yall, you've help answer some questions I've had. I have never ran one but plan on doing so next, I'm not in good enuff shape to do it this year, but I've been working on that
Thank you for this video, this is gonna help me sooo much for my first Sprint in Monterey, CA. I’m an ultra runner, but really afraid of the challenges/courses.
Congrats on signing up for your first Spartan race 👏 I feel like the opposite, where we started with Spartan races and are now getting into more endurance stuff, I’ll be doing my first marathon in June 😅
Hello, amazing video, im doing spartan race from 2016, got some trifectas. One thing that surprised me most is that you can split burpees between your mates. Here in Slovakia, as volunteers we are taught that racers cannot do that. But i think that it is great thing to do especially when you are running with someone who is running their first race. Cheers to the future :)
Thanks, great to hear you’ve gotten a few trifectas and have volunteered for these events. The splitting burpee’s thing I think is really only for the opens, for age group and elites where you are racing competitively you are on your own
I did my first Spartan Race last Saturday in Cesenatico, Italy & I need to say, that all the recommendation given in the video are fully correct & helpful. Next Race I am going to join will be in Maggiore, July 23. If some body is there- let me know, would appreciate to set up/join a team. Have fun & keep moving.
I was gonna do my trifecta this year but I had an accident on the Spartan Sprint back in April. On the top of the inverted wall I slipped and all my weight came crashing down on my bicep. They impact tore my short head bicep off the tendon and off the long head. Had to have surgery. They sewed my short & long head biceps back together and anchored it back to the bone. I'm over 10wks post op now. Messed my whole year up for racing. At least I had already gotten 2 other OCR races in before then this year.
So sorry to hear about your injury, surgery is never fun. Prior to this years races, last year I had knee surgery in January and then suffered a spinal injury in March that nearly paralyzed me. Spent over 3 months in physical therapy learning to walk again. Fortunately, I was able to make a full recovery and start racing again after a few months. Keep up the hard work and I'm sure you'll be racing again in no time!
@@MakeSomedayToday glad you've recovered. I'm healed up now, just gradually building back up strength in that arm & shoulder. Doing the 5k Muddy Dash next month on the 24th in Wildwood, FL. Hoping to be up to pay by December to do the Spartan Super in Lake Placid, FL.
Thanks for the video guys . Doing my 1st 2/24/24 Dodgers stadium. The monkey bars might be my weakness. Main motivation during the race. Is going to be that 🍺 that they'll be giving after you complete it 😁.
Thanks for sharing! At our open heats they didn’t say anything about the tops but since we’ve been doing Age Group events recently, they are sure to let you know not to touch the tops before you even get near the Helix 😄
Not supposed to touch top of Z Wall, Helix, or Olympus. Surprised volunteers let you walk across hand holds on Olympus. Didn’t watch past that. Keep pushing guys. Get that Trifecta!
Yes, that is true, thanks for sharing that. We were doing an open and the volunteers tend to let a lot of things slide like holding onto the top of obstacles. We did however do all of the obstacles the right way during our last race (Sprint) and are really excited to go all the way for our next race in Big Bear (Beast). Thanks for watching and your input 👍
Agreed, maybe the first recommendation is to read the manual (rules). Spartan has a honor system for open and volunteers are not referees. Good job guys !
My last Spartan race I got a cramp in my stomach going over the slip wall and the finish line was on the other side and I was holding on for dear life until someone grabbed my hand and pulled me up but I sat on the wall for like 10 min cuz I was in so much pain lol it was horrible
Wow, sorry to hear that you had a stomach cramp during the slip wall and had a hard time getting up and over the wall. I'm glad that you were able to get some assistance, that kind of help during a race can be so reassuring and inspiring. Congrats on completing the race though and hopefully you'll have a better experience on your next one
When using gloves, just use them sporadicly. When wearing them full time the skin gets wet and soft which can lead to blisters never the less. The mustard I need to try ... ;-)
Were you allowed to drop your camelbacks while you did the barbed wire and go back for them, or did you just hold them for one another? Doing my first Super in 2 days and am seriously considering running with a camelback. Thanks!
For sure! We actually just finished our trifecta last month, a Sprint with my parents at the Fox Raceway and the Beast in Big Bear (which was absolutely brutal!)
How many months do I need to train before my first race? I'm 54 and have been weight training and doing cardio for 7 years now. I consider myself to be in very good shape.. Thanks.
First, congrats on wanting to do a Spartan race at 54, that’s awesome 👏 In regard to training, you are probably fit enough for the race with all of the cardio and strength work you’ve done over the years, but you may want to try doing things like rope climbs or sled pulls to train your grip strength. Personally, the more prepared you go into the race the better your experience will probably be, so at a minimum a month or two would be good. We hope you have a great race!
Yeah, those bars are really spread apart and can be really difficult if you don’t have the wing span for them, although I hear going sideways can help out if you are a bit on the shorter side
@@MakeSomedayToday Thank you so much! Planning to join Spartan next year and I'm looking to pick up an apple watch myself too, preferably the SE series. I hope w some casing on it, it would be fine!
