- While Columbus Crew supporters were fighting to keep their team in Columbus, Austin and owner Anthony Precourt achieved villain status in MLS. But now that the Crew are saved and Austin are getting an expansion team, are we still looking at them as the enemy? Should Austin FC embrace the role as antagonist?

Any growth in the league is GOOD. As an LA Galaxy fan I HATE LAFC, but I like that they exist. This is an MLS rivalry dream.

USL teams need individual tv deals and soccer specific stadiums so that it can be feasible for pro-real, MLS is young and is 25 years old.
Yes, too many teams top teir & no where to go but ....to a new city! With a Second Division (and the promotion/relegation system), more teams are on top (or nearly so) & all follow their clubs! Up the Villa!

I think Austin is going to have a great atmosphere and a packed stadium for every game. They are the perfect soccer population and they will have no competition since there are no other pro teams there. Austin FC will be big and that sucks for me as a Dynamo fan because my city just can't seem to get behind the team.
Man, it's gotta be tough being fourth banana in Houston. Being the only pro team in town is going to make it a party atmosphere. But I am looking forward to a fun rivalry with the Dynamo!

This is what the MLS needs more than relegation/promotion. Real rivalry.
The thing is: relegation/promotion can create rivalries. Imagine you're an Inter Miami fan. In the last match, you'll face Orlando City away. Orlando desperately needs a win in order to stay in the MLS. The stadium is packed. Orlando fans doing their best to push the players forward. And then... Inter wins, the stadium suddenly goes dead silent. Orlando gets relegated.
These types of matches are the ones feeding real rivalries. Promotion/relegation is a huge part of rivalries. Making fun of your rival for a relegation, getting promoted and seeing your rival stay in the 2nd tier. It's fantastic.

Rivalry is not just about matches and playoffs. That's what you americans are not understanding about legit rivalries around the world.If you want great rivalries, you gotta have promotion/relegation. the best example I can give you is the Belo Horizonte Derby here in Brazil, between Cruzeiro x Atlético-MG. Cruzeiro, last year, was relegated for the first time in its history. Atlético-MG fans raised a mosaic written "I will celebrate your suffering" in a match this year. Another fan rented a helicopter and painted a letter "B" in it, as an alusion to the série B, our second division.
As an Austin FC fan, I hope we have a rivalry with Columbus because I want a rivalry that really means something other than the typical Texas interstate rivalry that doesn’t mean much like the Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys

Short answer? Austin, maybe. Precourt, absolutely.
Remember, one of the first things Precourt did after buying the Crew was take their games off local television and Fox Sports Ohio, and put them on Time Warner Sports, a channel more than 50% of central Ohio could not get. Then, when media coverage and attendance went down, he had the perfect reason to start looking for another market. Yeah, screw him.
Having a team in Austin will be Amazing. The average fan won’t care too much about the Precourt scandal, and like you said, he did some good shit with the crew.
If he had Austin in the original contract it means he wanted to be here from the start so hopefully he won’t be a douchebag with it.

As a former Austinite this video is amazing and I didn’t really know that it was has such a huge impact on the other club. Love the vids especially the CONCACAF stories and the jersey ratings. You should make those type of videos on other leagues
San Antonio got shafted. They already have their own stadium. They were doing well as San Antonio Scorpions FC - then went to shit when a new owner bought them, being rebranded as San Antonio FC. Probably why they got overlooked.

MLS needs to take more advantage of Markets that have no Professional Sports Teams like Austin or Albequerque. The support they get is always really good. I think Austin's Stadium could have possibly even been made 2times the size

Outside of the Columbus Crew nobody hates Austin. Other supporters groups have their own rivalries to worry about.
Great video! I was so stoked when Columbus got to keep their club. I know how it feels to lose your team because the Earthquakes were ripped from us. We had 2 MLS Cups under our belt and that very same squad went on to win 2 more Cups in Houston making it even harder on us in SJ. YOU'RE WELCOME HOUSTON. If it wasn't for the San Jose Earthquakes team with our manager Dom Kinnear you'd have zero stars above your crest. That team is the most unrecognized MLS dynasty IMHO. If that club had stayed in San Jose Landon Donovan would never have moved and they most likely would have won even MORE Cups.

I am Brazilian and I always liked the old Columbus Crew logo. The current one is also cool, but I prefer the previous one.

Probably kinda similar but as mls popularity wasn’t nearly as big as it is today and with the ease of getting an expansion team in a proven market compared to now, it likely wasn’t as extreme
I enjoy the branding and the aesthetic, but Precourt's kind of the... Worst. I've enjoyed supporting the "villain" in sports, so that brings some appeal to me, but as someone from Missouri, I'm probably gonna wait until the St. Louis team develops further before I get too far into the MLS.

No. I grew up in Minnesota when we lost the North Stars.(And almost the Twins.) Lived in Seattle when the Sonics bolted. And now love in SW Missouri and had a ringside seat for the Rams re-leaving. (Now, no emotion for the last, because I don't root for St Louis anything). So I get a fanbase's rage at their team doing an Indy Colts. I don't blame the city of Austin. But until Precourt is gone, they're on the list of teams we hate.

Also, I am hoping that Precourt would come back to Columbus. The Shitstorm will be heavy. But after some time, the people of the two cities will forget about this. Adding stadium sponsorship just put more money in his pocket (fee for the sponsorship) and the new logo simply caused an uptick in merchandise sales with the new logo (putting more money in his pocket as well)

If it makes Crew fans feel better, we had Aztex 1 move to Orlando and become a MLS team, and Aztex 2 waited until they were gonna lose their franchise before putting a team on the field, which is now the Bold. So although we haven't been screwed by an MLS team, we have been by 2 USL teams.
I feel as though American soccer craves a proper rivalry sooooo much but it will be a long time coming because they happen over time not over night or over a split decision

As an FC Dallas fan I pray that Austin fails spectacularly. They weren’t there in the beginning. We’re there when soccer needed them in this country. Now they jumped on the sport as a trend. They don’t deserve a team.

A good business move for the MLS would be t0o franchise teams wherever NFL close or move. eg start an Oakland Raiders MLS team (just make the logo slightly different to avoid copyright issues) and tap into a huge and frustrated raiders fanbase in their spiritual home of Oakland.

I'm Italian and I can say that I don't really understand this "American practice" of moving professional teams from a city to another one, fortunately there are few examples like that in Europe, and I think that it's not even so easy to do that because most of football clubs
foundation here dates back over a hundred years ago and there is a very strong link between cities and their clubs...I've been following MLS for a long time and yeah I'm so happy for Crew supporters.
You see that across all sports in North America and there are certain cities that are still scarred from this.
There are lots of North American sports teams over 100 years old. It's just that the teams are seen as franchises for businesses and not cultural institutions.
