  • A universally panned re-brand. A supporters group feuding with the owner. And that owner threatening to sell to an American group looking to relocate.
    The situation with Montreal is getting bad. But yet, no one seems to be talking about it.

    As a Arizona resident I would love a MLS team but if they suddenly moved here I wouldn’t like it. Never take a team from its city.

      @@dannytradio It's more to do with casuals and non-fans instead of supporters. Launch the rebrand with pictures and video of "cool" people doing "cool" things in the new kit, make some generic-yet-bold-sounding statement about "a new era", and maybe some people will buy merch and match tickets that otherwise wouldn't have cared less. It's the same all over the world. Clubs know that the supporters will fall in line nine times out of ten, even with rebrands of institutions like say, Juventus and Fulham. The problem here is that MLS has severely underestimated just how vocal supporters groups are in issues ranging from rebrands to social justice, and they're getting routinely embarrassed by them on these issues.

      @@BroadwayJoe99 the more people come the less the voice of the individual is heard. Thats why the rebranding of other teams worked more smoothly. Since the MTL market is so small its a bunch of hardcore fans and they really like what they have and arent scared to get involved

    It's crazy how the Impact are in this situation. And it's not only their own supporters who actively stand behind "this rebrand sucks". During our Canadian Championship match in Hamilton, we were consistently chanting about the rebrand and basically saying "yo this rebrand is garbage". It's sad that we've arrived at this sort of squabble now.
    I'm just waiting now for whenever Montreal eventually ends up in the CPL after Saputo sells. I just don't see this going any other way currently.

    When will owners and front offices get it? You can't just rebrand teams and expect fans to like it. It is part of why some fans are so identified with the team, the colors, the uniforms, logo, brand, etc. You take that away and you take away the team's identity and that of the fans. It is just common sense. All these owners care about it getting more money by rebranding every few years and the hope that people overseas buy in. Just focus on the fans in your city! Have a local fanbase! Don't tick off the fans!

      So can relate to this being a ATL UTD supporter. They've had three different primary kits in 5 yrs of existence when their first kit was just iconic and actually represented the Five Stripes moniker.
      Every time owners/ppl in charge chase the money, they sacrifice the product ppl have actually grown to love and identify with. Think about how FIFA want to have the World Cup every two yrs. That completely takes away from the special nature of the tournament and it forces players to compete in even more high stakes games which inevitably will lead to burn out and injuries all for the sake of money

    As a Montrealer and someone who’s gone to many Impact games over the years with my friends, brothers and daughters, I told myself never will I go again or purchase any new merchandise until they change their name back and apologize to the fans.
    I’m not an Ultra but I support their struggle. What fan would support a “club” that doesn’t think to query their fans before such a marketing move (especially the most die hard) and worse, lock them out because they refuse to be onboard with a rebrand that 1. sounds ridiculous (like a radio or tv station, and relates to a physical handicap) 2. Looks dreadful ❄️ 3. Erases its own tradition, history and unique brand 4. And makes no sense - soccer is not a winter sport and they don’t play games at Stade Saputo in the winter - they’re playing February CCL indoors.
    Mr Saputo, who deserves tremendous credit for his devotion to the city and sport, prides himself on an organization built on family values but the recent actions of this “club” demonstrates they do not treat their fans as family but just dollar signs. Kicking out the oldest supporters group that have been there through thick and thin, that sing nonstop, travel to away games, that stand (not sit) and have acted as guardians to the colours and history of the club is a major offense.
    So anyone wanting to casually see a game as an event should go, but no way will I invest my money and passion or children’s passion towards a club that are tone deaf and disrespectful to their fans and their own history and heritage. Quebecers are very passionate about their culture/history, it’s in our motto “je me souviens” and they are emotionally invested as sports fans and if you burn them or turn on them then eventually no one will go. Ask the Expos after all the fire sales. I’m hoping Montreal will get a CPL team soon so all the disenfranchised supporters can go to them.

      As a Rochesterian who has no love for the Impact (think more of a Wes Mantooth-esque 'I hate you, but dammit, I respect you'), I'm fervently against a European style rebrand unless it's what the fans want.
      A lot of the excitement of the Rhinos' restart was taken away from us longtime fans when the team decided to rebrand after about two months' worth of legacy posts on social media.
      I can't speak for anyone else, but 'the Rhinos coming back' is a better hook than 'generically-named second division club starts play'.
      We'll see what happens, but I'm certainly not buying any merch with 'Rochester NY FC' on it.

    As a lifelong Montréal Impact supporter,
    this whole story makes me sick.
    How can the owner of a football club be so delusional and disrespectful towards its own fans?
    NOBODY wanted this rebrand except for Joey Saputo and Kevin Gilmore in the first place.
    This sort of nonsense is why MLS will never reach its full potential.

      For real.
      That beautiful logo was the one good thing Anthony Precourt did in Columbus. I understand the new owners wanting to move on from that era of the Crew and all the negative emotion it brought to the fanbase, but I hope they revert back to that in the future. It was a great crest.

      The owners of CF Montreal wouldn’t allow them to use that name. Chievo Verona dissolved this year in serie B and a previous player Sergio Pellissier tried to start his own team named FC Chievo 2021 but couldn’t use that name because he didn’t own the naming rights and was threatened by legal action. Most likely CF Montreal owners still own the Impact de Montreal name unfortunately.

    As a Toronto fan, I feel sorry for MTL fans. The Rebrand has failed and they should get their name (Impact) and club back. Saputo Out. I’m backing Montreal fans and ultras here, no matter how much it seems wrong for a TFC fan to do.

    If you're looking for a starting point with all of this go back to July 2017. During the annual summer meeting with the club members Joey Saputo said and I quote : "We are a SMALL CLUB. Our main objective is the FINANCIAL STABILITY of the club. Therefore we will never spend big money to obtain important players to boost the club". That quote from Joey Saputo angered so many club members that they went to social media to display their frustration towards the owner.
    This is the same Joey Saputo who back in January 2021 approved the rebranding but also added that since joining the MLS in 2012 the club has lost on average over $10 miilion per season.
    Anyone who's been following the club since Day 1 when they were called the FC Supra in the old Canadian Soccer League know that Joey Saputo has NEVER admitted publicly that he was wrong no matter what. He has ALWAYS put the blame (fault) for the woes of HIS club on other people.

      Small club yet during the Drogba era 2015-16 was when they apparently had one of the top 6 budgets in the league but really didn’t spend it well. Actually they have a bad track record of wasting money on players (Mancosu’s new contract, Oduro’s new contract, Camacho, Fanni extra signings when they couldn’t get anyone in the window) And how is it possible when you have Drogba selling out every home match, have a CCL run to the final, have Bologna feeding you players, and also have a run in MLS playoffs that you still lose money???🤔 For a long time they had family on payroll: Braz, NDS and Biello, don’t tell me Saputo was paying them big bucks? So how did they lose money?

      @@sunrisevideo7687 Dont forget about a cut of the expansion fees of every expansion since 2013. They might have operating losses but that includes game day operations. Factor in expansion money, and I doubt they're losing anything.

    As an Impact fan, when they announced the rebrand, I accepted that my team was dead. I'm never gonna cheer on CF Montreal. It's a different team to me. I'm just totally indifferent to them. When Gilmore was fired, I felt a sliver of hope that maybe the rebrand would die with him. Nope. The fish rots from the head. As harsh as it sounds if I can't have the Impact back I'd rather Saputo move the team to the States so we can have a CPL team that respects its fans.

    The worst thing is that kevin gilmore(the rebrand guy) quit the team a week before the Can champ final and everyone was hyped because we thought maybe, maybe it could go back to impact.
    People started to buy tickets for the final game vs toronto. But gilmore was just Saputo's puppet. In the meeting, Saputo insulted the ultras, who are there since 2002, by saying fans dont come to the games because of the atmosphere(referring to the ultras) which is full bs.
    When the meeting report was leaked by a fan, everyone was pissed off. The final game against toronto was supposed to welcome way more fans but we decided to not show up. When you see the standing part that doesnt show on TV there is NO ONE seeting there!
    I have to admit there is more fans now than when we were in low table years. Its normal, we had a great year! But if one year we really suck no one will show up. The hard core fans won't be there and the bandwagons who just want to see a win won't too. Saputo will then realise what he did. Instead of investing in the club's players and budget, he turned the real impact fans against him. Ultras will never return until IMPACT is back or like a mashup (CF IMPACT MONTRÉAL). But Saputo doesn't want to change. He's to busy being in bologne while we play the CAN champ final.
    Anyways, thank you for doing a video on my team to spread awareness on this buisness oriented move that will not work on us! ALLEZ L'IMPACT! FREE 132! BRINGBACKDROGBA!

    If there's anything that saputo should sell is Bologna. Sadly, I have a feeling he's gonna keep the name and move on without the fans. I don't understand the stubbornness from Saputo. MTL is on the verge of forming a very promising team and this rebrand is incredibly distracting and pointless

    Im a TFC fan but I was devastated when Montreal announced the rebrand. It's horrible to erase such a rich history and identity of a club for basically no reason. I feel for all Impact fans, you guys don't deserve that kind of treatment from Saputo.

      Unfortunately my friend that will never happen. The CSA (Canadian Soccer Association) who practically runs the CPL will never put a team in the province of Quebec. Whether it's Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, Quebec City, Trois-Rivières...NEVER!
      The CPL has just expanded with two new clubs in Saskatoon and in the Vancouver area. And if they expand again don't surprised if there will be teams in Regina, Windsor, Mississauga, Kingston, Moncton, Fredericton and St-John's NFLD

    Americans will never get in soccer and if we try to Europeanize it by rebranding names of clubs, it will work out. Just keep the original names because that’s what makes MLS unique. No one wants another CF or FC. People love “the Fire”, “The Revs”, “The Union, etc. you don’t hear those names often around the world in soccer. Rebranding is ruining the MLS

    I live in Miami. Montreal is my favorite soccer team. When we went to the game in Miami I was wearing the new CF Montreal jersey the only other Montreal fan spotted me and walk to me wearing the Impact jersey and he was like “dude take that shit off, wear the Impact jerseys. We need to send them a message” I was very confused until I heard the news about what was going on.

      They banned people from sitting in the Ultras section. I think those people could still buy tickets elsewhere in the stadium.

    I'm a casual but loyal MTL fan and am ok with the rebrand. More interested in what goes on, on the pitch. It's inevitable that negativity in the stands will leach onto the field and into leadership. Not good to be your own worst enemy.

    The MLS has had it in for the Ultras since pretty much the clubs inception. The league wants to disassociate with the Ultra movement and move towards casual supporters clubs. Their model being Seattle and and Portland. They would love nothing more than to banish Montreal and San Jose Ultras.
    The last straw was was an incidence of violence towards TFC fans outside the stadium. They were also warned after a previous game where garbage was thrown from their section, on to the pitch. Does that warrant banning the whole section? Absolutely not. However the Ultras should of known they were being watched.
    A rebrand in MLS is basically forsaking your current fanbase in hope of attracting a new one. I agree that a changé in name isn't going to bring in the fans that prefer watching European foot ...er football. Maybe they might want to consider improving their product?
    I think Saputo wants to defer some of the expenses incurred with the rebrand in 2022, and sell off the rebranded merch. He'll ultimately come to his senses and include the Impact into tge team name in 2023.
    I don't think the Saputo family will sell the team. They don't need the money being one of Canada's richest families, and frankly, I believe the league would frown upon losing the expansion money that could otherwise be obtained.

      you're probably right, since it's actually not the first logo change theyve made. about a decade ago they made the logo more modern looking and as far as i know most people were fine with it. Now personally if they stayed with the current logo and went back to the Impact name it would be fine, although i find the snowflake logo a bit odd.

      As a montreal resident and fan, i can tell you that personally the logo is also a huge issue. The slowflake makes no sense since the season is being played mostly in spring/summer and it just enforces the stereotypical icy cold canadian north

    I never personally liked the name Montreal impact and thought Olympique Montreal would have been a far better name. But I'm not a Montreal supporter, and I understand there's history behind the Impact name. When will "owners" learn that football is nothing without the fans, and that history and identity matters more than your personal profit margins.

    Coming in late as someone from England but I definitely think that the names like “impact” and “Galaxy” are a lot better for the MLS. Gives it a unique twist not usually seen elsewhere and when will owners learn to listen to the fans of these clubs?

    Louisville City's Jon Neace actually made a public comment that he considered buying Real Salt Lake and moving them to Louisville, but RSL included an academy system and stadium, both of which obviously couldn't be moved. Montreal sounds like a better candidate to be moved, although Joey Saputo would probably need to have a Candian Premier League team lined up and ready to go if he bails on MLS.

    La galaxy fan. Rebranding can be a good thing. Some crests are just too 90s. Modernizing and appealing to international players to move is a big deal. Owners have the money, we don't. They have done a great job at expanding mls...I take their word for it. Grow with your team. As an LA galaxy fan from 97, it works out In the end. Enjoy the team, but you don't own them

    Oh that is why it is CF and not Impact, I mean I wasn't finding videos on YT about it. I first thought it was another club.
    Speaking of European football and ultras, I'm French, I know how violent ultras can be (to be fair, it'll never be as violent as in France, it isn't your culture) so I can understand a whole group ban but here... Damn if a French club did that, some ppl would die from the riot lol
    Btw, just some figures I found on YT, it seems this club has like 9k subscribers, it isn't much but it is ok, a lot of French clubs has less.
    But finally, I would like to say bonne chance à mes cousins Québécois ! Je partage votre combat !
    I always heard Impact de Montréal and thinking about football (soccer as a name is meh) and Canada ofc I think Impact de Montréal !

    If the owner is this stubborn about keeping the Montreal CF name, I don't see this team staying in Montreal. Like idk where the team would move to. Maybe Jacksonville, New Orleans, OKC, or Las Vegas. But if enough of the fanbase refuses to tolerate the rebrand and the owners don't want to return to the Impact, I don't see any other outcome than the team being sold and relocated with maybe a CPL team to take the Impact's place.

      Jacksonville is all about College Football even the Jaguars struggle for Support there, New Orleans is going to flood eveuntally, the Pelicans might get relocated and the Superdome is Artificial Turf New Orleans is a NFL City, OKC is a NBA City you just don't fuck with the NBA and Vegas the MLS would rather extort a expansion fee out of Vegas its the smarter play

    Not sure what Mr. Saputo's motivation is for the rebrand, but if he is looking for a more traditional name why not do what others have done and steal one from a European club. I'm thinking Olympique de Marseille. It's french and it fits the history of the city and the club. Outside of that, I don't mind the badge, but the name is weak and they should change it back.

    I do not think CF Montreal will move to the U.S. I think it is much more likely that there will be a second first-tier pro soccer team in possibly Laval (second team in Greater Montreal) in the CPL. It does not make sense as Montreal and Joey Saputo for years was trying to get into MLS. It is important to note that Montreal (also Toronto FC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC) if they leave MLS, will not get another team in MLS, because of CPL. Examples can be seen like the Ottawa Fury FC, who were in the US second division league. I will say though that they should have talked to the Supporters' Groups with this name change before making it happen.

      @@charlesdansereau-menard3347 The colors and the logo and good designs. I am a designer in a lot of my work and study it a great deal and from a pure design perspective it looks great. America is used to a more cartoony and guady look though so I get why people don't like it. Only thing I don't like is that I woulda maybe kept the impact name, or went for a more standard Montreal FC, Montreal United , Montreal City name brand. I really don't think MLS branding works, people prefer the branding of euro clubs both in and out of America statistically so I wouldn't fight against it. Good design language, has a unique color coding and represents the city far more.

    I actually like the rebrand. I think it makes more sense with that city having an overwhelming amount of people that speak French. Could they have done a better job of consulting fans, of course, Also, I think many supporters groups act like children. They didn’t suspend the Ultras for one incident. After the first one, there was probably a warning of some sort and they did it again.

      CF Montreal is a fake European name. L'Impact is a North American name (and it's bilingual, because impact is the French word for impact). We speak French but we're North American.

    Am I the only one who really likes C.F Montreal's branding regardless of the rebrand context. The black and blue is very intimating and the logo looks surpassingly good & modern.
    Hopefully they will return to being the impact but maybe some other city can adopt the colors like Milwaukee or Detroit.

    Sell the team to a yank, move them to some city, and choke out whatever USL or other lower division team that is there.
    The MLS way of doing business naturally but for us in Canada, it means one less MLS franchise, and that is beautiful. The league historically hates Canadians and considers Canadian players to be imports and American players to be domestics. For the MLS franchises in Canadian cities, only three Canadians are needed. With the Whitecaps also going down in flames with both middle fingers up, we might luck out, and have the Canadian Premier League get two of the biggest markets we have.
