I find it funny that alot of MLS teams now are doing the City FC/SC naming convention to be "closer to the European naming conventions" When City FC became a huge thing in Europe solely to differentiate one team from another due to how many teams are repressing the same city. Examples being like AC Mlian and Inter Milan, AS Roma and Lazio, almost all London teams, outside of Tottenham Hotspur being named after their village FC or United, and FC Tokyo versus every other Tokyo based teams in J League.
I hate San Diego FC for two reasons: 1. They intentionally destroyed the loyal, a team that was community oriented and involved and with a unique name. I am not even a SD Loyal fan…I’m a Birmingham native and thus a Birmingham legion FC fan and Charlotte FC follower in MLS. Being able to destroy a fanbase, a team, a culture, and a potential rivalry without any consequences and try to cover it up is the very reason why soccer is a joke in this country and the MLS is about the sixth most popular league among American soccer fans. It’s disgraceful and embarrassing. 2. They announced the team in May and said they would announce logos and names later. It took them may to October to come up with that monstrosity of a badge/logo and weak ass name?? My cat could’ve come up with something better in both categories in less than half that time. What a joke. This is not Europe. Let’s come up with cool American names for our teams please.
That's silly. Realistically, who where the SD Loyal anyway -- some team that popped-up 3 years ago? Do you know how many Soccer teams in San Diego have come and gone over the years? And up and down California, and across the U.S., for that matter. These San Diego FC are already elevating the entire approach to Player Development in the U.S./MLS. They're building a full-on "live-in" Youth Academy! SDFC and these new owners are serious players, and the San Diego fans will finally have something to be proud of THAT WILL LAST.
@@davidday2373 your comment is silly. Yes teams come and go all the time in the United States. It’s a result of a closed system and many simply can’t pay the bills. The difference between those clubs and this situation is that this club was intentionally put out of business to be replaced and the other simply folded for natural reasons, like they couldn’t pay the bills or they couldn’t find players or they didn’t have a place to play.
@@gracielynn9623 What does that even mean "a closed system"... its just the NORMAL way sports leagues have flourished in the U.S. How can anyone argue with the success of MLB, the NFL, the NBA, the NHL, and now MLS? Those other failed Soccer teams and leagues of the past never had the dedicated, long-term investment or vision that MLS has. Also, the perception of Soccer has improved (used be seen as a boring, wussy sport in the U.S.). Anyway, the point remains. Those other teams weren't built to last. San Diego is friggin lucky to have these owners at SDFC. They're going to be a strong team across the board.
I think what’s disgraceful is that the SD Loyal had Landon Donovan, a US Soccer legend, and basically moved him aside for this wealthy person who’s not from there. SD Loyal had the support of the community. I got the impression that the Loyal were being moved up to MLS, like what we saw happen with Seattle Sounders, Portland Timbers.
It would have been cool if they had a ship in the logo... I have lived in San Diego and the coolest thing is when a carrier is returning home, or leaving the bay. (Both Man city and Man United have ships in there logos)
San Diego FC looks like is going to be an instant success in MLS, so I could see why fans of other MLS teams might "hate" them already. But for anyone that "hate" SDFC over their name/logo (LOL), or because they're replacing USL's SD Loyal (which had a horrible name)... that's just silly nonsense.
I been to a SAC FC game and it was so much fun. They have a community that backs them and as Californian (born and raised) their logo is awesome! However, as an LAFC fan I cant wait to go on away games to SD. SD is awesome to visit! The Padres vs Dodgers rivalry is intense and this new derby wont be any diffrent.
For me, its more how the league has screwed one fanbase out of the team they loved, and rejected the sacramento fanbase, whos club would still stay. I honestly hope another league can pop up eventually to rival MLS.
@@OCs_And_Storiesyou guys are really clueless how this works. Even in the rare times MLS targets a city they need to get an investor on board. If the Mansours of the world don’t want Sac it’s never going to happen. Other times it’s the USL team that wants MLS.
Being a Galaxy fan and Orange County SC fan I feel like having San Diego FC there will be no local rivalry for OCSC. I also feel like the Galaxy and LAFC will beat SDFC a lot and a lot of away supporters will be heading the SDFC games.
Being an LAFC fan and Oakland Roots & OCSC follower ... from the look of things, San Diego FC has ambitious owners/front office, and are doing a lot of things right. I feel like SDFC will be coming out of gates fully-loaded, guns blazing. Like Atlanta, LAFC, Austin, St Louis, when they kicked off... SDFC is not going out with a 'soft launch' (like Orlando, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Miami). They are building a 'live-in' Youth Academy! These SDFC owners are serious players. If anything, SDFC will light a fire under the Galaxy and LAFC's (and San Jose's) asses.

I will always have disdain for this sham of a franchise. I want them to always lose and I hope this owner pulls out of the league. Bring back the Loyal!
This is the problem with SD sports fans. This split in the fanbases does not happen in other cities. For example so many idiots in San Diego hate the one consistent winner, SDSU basketball, because you clowns blame the University for losing the shitty Chokers.
As a Sacramentan, MLS can shove it. We want to say we own our club, not some percentage of an entity our owner would have PAYED to give up ownership of the club for. Just to be in the MLS. Our owner just bought Huddersfield Town, which he wouldn’t have been able to do if he payed the ransom Garber was demanding we pay. I’ve been saying for years that USL, upon institution of pro/rel, gain a lot of ground on MLS as the big dog in America. Not to mention the fact that the USL clubs don’t have to give to a giant pool for ANOTHER CLUB to be able to afford a star player (Messi). I want my team to own itself.
Look as a foreigner not from the US, I absolutely hate this club and all it represents, but I don’t think the crest is that bad. I don’t agree with what you are saying in regards to the badge not being ‘San Diego’ enough, surely these teams are suppose to exist above the city they play in, Dortmunds badge doesn’t have any landmarks on it, neither does Barcelona, or any of the London clubs, to me having a club and after a city with landmarks and imagery of the city is basically saying, we are this cities club, no other clubs should exist here. That goes against literally every thing football is about. I’m a graphic designer but no matter what badge this team had I was never going to like it because of what the teams underneath represents and has done, but the badge is the least of its problems.
this is an interesting take, i never thought of it this way. That being said, although this works in Europe; remember that MLS works under the assumption that these are essentially individual departments of the same company that are simply situated in different cities, from their perspective, indeed no other club is allowed to be there, especially from a lower league. I definitely can agree with your perspective to some extent, but the fact that mls is definitely working off of the idea that this club should represent the city, yet it does such a shit job at it is laughable.
@@aranchuica965 "remember that MLS works under the assumption that these are essentially individual departments of the same company that are simply situated in different cities" Aye I know that full well, its a shite way to run a sport if you want people to take the support to the next level, to bleed for their teams.
Honestly my biggest problem with the San Diego FC logo is that it looks more sterile than a surgery room in a hospital. It looks comically corporate and lifeless, especially when you compare it to all the other MLS club logos. Hell the only distinctive element of it, The Flow, doesn't even feel like it's actually representative of San Diego, like you said it just looks like Optimus Prime's butthole. It looks like they put in bare minimum effort and said "that's perfect". Hell I can't even think of a kit design that'll make that logo look even remotely good.
Both reasons are why I hate SDFC already. This should be Sacramento’s MLS spot, AND replacing the loyal, it’s just heart breaking for their fans. Another awesome video my man!! If you’re ever in Portland, let me know and I’ll get you to a match no problem.

To be honest I am more excited for USL now. I can watch some game on CBS. Quality probably won't be on par with MLS. But it would be easier to follow. No nonsense playoff format.
I have no ties to San Diego whatsoever, but I can see why their residents hate this. San Diego FC is pushing out something organic for something completely contrived and corporate. Plus I loved their orange and aqua color scheme. As for the logo, my best guess is the one with the gray you found on wikipedia will be used on the jerseys and that that gray will actually be a chrome material on the patch. The other one only exists to show that the color is shiny, but the way light interacts with the patch will obviously depend on the time of day, weather, etc.
Bullshtt, is something organic that you're pushing out (no offense). And the residents in SD actually DON'T hate this. It's mostly all of you outsiders "virtue-signaling" phonies (no offense) who are trying to propagate this "we hate it"-narrative. The name, San Diego FC is just basic. It's not "bad" and its definitely not cringe/corny like the "Loyal," or the "Wave" for that matter. They did try too much with that logo and colors, though. "Navy" and Chrome coulda been cool, a bit more subtle. The "Azul" crosses into pandering.
Praying that in the next upcoming years San Diego will be the modern day Chivas USA and will fold after 3 seasons, in which they will barely go through the round of 16 just to to get scored on by Salt Lake City at the 88th minute
@@mannnyFresH52the players wasn't the problem with Chivas USA, the ownership was, once the partner took full control of Chivas USA,he changed everything to the club being Mexican/Mexican-American exclusive. Forcing the MLS to get involved due to the blatent racism.
Would’ve been better in Sacramento, the Valley needs and wants its own team, a lot of natural derbies would create attention, every home game would be a packed house. And as far as “generic” names go, I prefer to the North American model of city and mascot. Would’ve been batter as Deportivo San Diego since they want to lean on the Hispanic community with “Azul”.

The name is average but still better than naming them after some animal, the city name is the important thing not the mascot. “Let’s go watch the unicorns”, who? “ the San Diego unicorns!”, so you mean let’s go watch San Diego then. The mascots don’t matter, the city does
San Diego should honestly be grateful their getting a team. Beggars cannot be choosers! So what if the name is generic? Get over it or stay in the USL Championship! GET OVER IT!
I wonder how much longer MLS will bend over for NYCFC, until they finally get sick of it and force them into a new stadium. At least the Revolution play in a multi purpose stadium.
Friendly reminder NYCFC was one of the most hated expansion teams to join the league. 1) No stadium (still true) 2) Owned by Yankees, Man City and Abu Dhabi 3) There was already a team in the NY metropolitan area We are still hated for the fact we play in a baseball stadium but at least that will change by 2027!
Isn't this why they built the Snapdragon stadium? suspicious that they announced it shortly after chargers left, they couldn't keep the NFL, they use association football as plan b
No. The Snapdragon Stadium was built for high school and college football - not soccer/association football. If memory serves me right, the City of San Diego turned down a proposal to build a soccer-specific stadium that would've brought MLS much sooner to San Diego. Instead, the City of San Diego voted in favor of the proposal that brought Snapdragon Stadium to life, and by a large margin, I might add. I believe that was the second motive behind the creation of the San Diego Loyal.
@@Nine06Mirage That justification is old "we help" improve school properties for greater student achievement but it is there investment and then everything else
As a San Diegan, and life-long soccer fan, I really do hope people do keep piling on. Like many, I was so fucking happy when we got a team announced, and it was like a dream come true. I've never gotten into MLS, because really there was no team to follow for me. Then this comes out, and it's the most generic shit ever. No life. I have no idea about the Sacramento thing. As for the Loyal, the name grew on me over time, and I thought they had an interesting look, and would've welcomed them if that was the team that made it to mls for us. I was fully prepared for SDFC, or FCSD, SDSC, etc, as unfortunately it seems that's what the MLS wants. But then I look at the other team's logos/shields, and I feel like this is by far the most generic. I regularly overspend on sporting events and gear, and I don't want to spend a dollar on anything with that logo on it. If they don't fix/update their logo, I imagine they'll grow a very passive and uninvested fanbase, and blame it on the fans when they don't actually try to appeal to them.
Its because the dominant fan will be 100% Mexican plus you have The Mexican American fans . Plus you have the Gringos . Snap Dragon Stadium will get filled up like an ex girlfriend …
What made the logo so bad for me was the so called four virtues that made up San Diego. This logo could have resembled San Diego better. I seriously hate these team names, I hate trying to make people think that the logo will be as iconic as the ones in Europe. These teams are trying too hard to be like these European teams and not find names that make the team unique I would honestly have thought that the Loyal would in MLS but it was probably not going to happen anyway but it would have been fun to think of a potential match between the Loyal and the MLS side. Lastly, I think Sacramento might have a shot again in the near future as they might get a new investor but they will face competition from Vegas and Phoenix for sure.
As a San Diegan I can say this isn't true, sure everyone has their opinions on the Crest but who doesn't. All in all we are very excited for 2025 Football.
Not liking this team is easy. They could have easily worked with the Loyal since it built up a decent fanbase. Instead, just left them in the dust. And, as other said, Sacramento got boned and should have been picked.
Surely the owners have missed out on keeping san diego loyal colours and name . The fans already there would have helped snowball the growth of the franchise in MLS. Blue has already been done . Green and orange pops .
Someone in another video suggested an orca as a logo, I think that would have been cool too, San Diego has a lot of cool native animals, we’re a military city, they could of easily come up with a better name/logo
My partner lives in San Diego, I personally live in Europe, while I will completely admit I despise the american style names in Association Football (Soccer), if absolutely everyone hates the name, then change it, if everyone wants the name "San Diego Loyal", I might completely disagree, but your audience has spoken. The logo could DEFINITELY be better. When I visited San Diego, the main thing that stuck with me was how colorful the city was, I think the colors of the Loyal were absolutely better, ditch the shield shape, (I'd *personally* keep the flow, but do something better with it, make it look less like a butthole) The logo and colors definitely could be much better. While as a European I don't LIKE the americanized name "San Diego Loyal". I feel a better name than "San Diego FC" could have been picked. Maybe something spanish related? Look at Inter Miami's name, SD could have easily tried something similar 🤷♂️
My understanding was with MLS coming in, the rent situation became insurmountable. It was hard to begin with but with an MLS team in the market, game over.
I would like to see a MLS team called themselves team name FC not having the city. In Canada in the CPL some teams have that : Forge FC (Hamilton) , Pacific FC (Victoria) Calvary FC, Valour FC ( Calgary, Winnipeg) York united (for York region north of Toronto) and there’s HFX Wanderers ( the HFX is short for Halifax) . Many London clubs don’t have city name cause there’s a few truth be told but look at the Crew or Galaxy those names are so well known you could just go Galaxy FC and Crew SC and we all know where their from.
The reason San Diego is FC is because the soccer geeks in the supporters' groups (not the cool ones, but the dorks who will go up to a perfect stranger in a bar and scream "IT'S NOT SOCCER, IT'S FOOTBALL, YOU #$@#$^$*^&!!!" (never mind that "soccer" is a UK term) yet had never heard of soccer before 1994) are the squeaky wheels that the owners listen to, rather than the rest of fans. The new owners listen to them, and the result is every new team is _______ City, _______ United, Sporting ____, Real ___, FC ___, ____ FC, to name a few (but then, they are better that the DawgKatzz or the KatDawgzz, or worse, the Psychlonezzz). Their attitude is that the US will never be taken seriously unless we have team names that are carbon copies of those in Europe. They are the ones who will opine ad nauseum (or possibly jump off a bridge) that soccer's (er, um, football, please don't hit me!!!) is done for if Joe Public were to somehow play against Nagoya Grampus Eight in the FIFA Club Final. Oh, the humanity!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is America. The sports fans and the sports culture here are different than the rest of the world. It took me years to finally accept those things, but I have. People want promotion and relegation here, yet they don't realize the economic impact that relegation will have on a club, I mean franchise. People want promotion and relegation here, yet they don't realize that it has taken MLS years to finally turn profits and that the USL system is still trying to get there. While we're at it, why don't we advocate for promotion and relegation in the NBA, NFL, NHL, and MLB as well? Let's turn the American sports culture and its fans upside down completely!
If anything MLS will go to 32 teams probably bring in Las Vegas and Tampa from the USL. In long term they may buy the USL and create a pro/rel after that who knows.
I'd argue that MLS is more likely to implement a major-minor league system like the MLB does, but that probably wouldn't be realistic considering how global soccer talent is

Could've just stolen the Loyal or Waves badge and receive less anger
They literally had 1 fucking job and it was to do that. Bring the loyal up. Im from the east coast and even i know about the san diego loyal (rip)
We really could have welcomed Sacramento Republic instead.
Long overdue
Or the Loyal.
Yeah MLS is a bully
@@OCs_And_Storiesyou guys are really clueless how this works. Even in the rare times MLS targets a city they need to get an investor on board. If the Mansours of the world don’t want Sac it’s never going to happen. Other times it’s the USL team that wants MLS.
Being a Galaxy fan and Orange County SC fan I feel like having San Diego FC there will be no local rivalry for OCSC. I also feel like the Galaxy and LAFC will beat SDFC a lot and a lot of away supporters will be heading the SDFC games.
Damn, you must hate winning
I like all American soccer teams, even Chivas USA :)
I like San Diego FC, but I hate teams like City FC...it's so boring. I miss the MLS golden times.
San Diego has always had cool teams like SD Sockers, SD Flash and SD Loyal. San Diego MLS should re-consider his name.
I think the rich Englishman will buy the Sacramento Republic...I still think they can play in MLS one day.
They’ll just name it Sacramento SC

Name is boring as hell, should've gone with San Diego Sol
The "Sol"??? Are you fcking kidding. SDFC is simply basic, which is better than the usual cornball-ass names that come up with. Former San Diego soccer teams: SD Flash, SD Jaws, SD Sockers, SD Sunwaves, SD Surf, SD Spirit, SD Loyal, SD Zest??? (that might be a troll/deep fake joke on wikipedia)

@@DR.Doom5150 bro thinks demonyms are white lmfao
Beggars can't be choosers. Get over it.
The Loyal badge gives me a desert vibe, not SD. A New Mexico club fits, in my opinion.
Or Florida.
Not to mention San Diego’s NWSL team LITERALLY was Sacramento’s until Epstein confidante Ron Burkle decided to take his trash to Ocean Beach.
Just be thankful Sacramento Republic exists in the USL Championship

Live in SD and there’s no hate here. Logo is lowk mid and the name is what it is but Twitter isn’t a representation of real life
city_name FC is such a generec overused naming template and having the logo of a failed Mercedes spinoff or an Epcot attraction isn't helping

I don’t think that will ever happen agin The mls is actually attracting pretty good players now a city like San Diego will surely attract a few stars
I'm surprised that people don't talk about how St. Louis FC Folded when St. Louis SC was announced. I have one of their Scarves.

…Did you put the backyard soccer music over the fantasy soccer ad?
The name is average but still better than naming them after some animal, the city name is the important thing not the mascot. “Let’s go watch the unicorns”, who? “ the San Diego unicorns!”, so you mean let’s go watch San Diego then. The mascots don’t matter, the city does
That club badge looks AI created.
NYCFC just got stadium plans approved earlier this year, supposedly going to finish construction in 2027.
@@richyrich1913 I mean this isn't the first time though, when they joined they said they had a new stadium lined up.
Friendly reminder NYCFC was one of the most hated expansion teams to join the league.
1) No stadium (still true)
2) Owned by Yankees, Man City and Abu Dhabi
3) There was already a team in the NY metropolitan area
We are still hated for the fact we play in a baseball stadium but at least that will change by 2027!

Beggars can't be choosers.
I’m here in San Diego I don’t see any hate
The logo looks like the failed attempt when for the first NHL Stadium Series, they changed all of the logos to have a chrome aesthetic.
Its because the dominant fan will be 100% Mexican plus you have The Mexican American fans . Plus you have the Gringos . Snap Dragon Stadium will get filled up like an ex girlfriend …
The MLS wanted all reserve teams instead of First teams to be us open cup, and us soccer said no.. make a video on that please
San Diego FC isn't a bad name, they can build a brand around SDFC just like LAFC did. The logo looks generic though
It isn't bad, but it would be like if the San Diego Legion of MLR rebranded to San Diego RUFC. It is pretty generic compared to what they already had.

The badge version that doesn't have the chrome actually looks really good in my opinion.
I love it ! San Diego!👍🏽
Should give oakland or san fran a team
When I visited San Diego, the main thing that stuck with me was how colorful the city was, I think the colors of the Loyal were absolutely better, ditch the shield shape, (I'd *personally* keep the flow, but do something better with it, make it look less like a butthole)
The logo and colors definitely could be much better.
Sorry I really like the badge, but as they say we are all different?
I would like to see a MLS team called themselves team name FC not having the city. In Canada in the CPL some teams have that : Forge FC (Hamilton) , Pacific FC (Victoria) Calvary FC, Valour FC ( Calgary, Winnipeg) York united (for York region north of Toronto) and there’s HFX Wanderers ( the HFX is short for Halifax) . Many London clubs don’t have city name cause there’s a few truth be told but look at the Crew or Galaxy those names are so well known you could just go Galaxy FC and Crew SC and we all know where their from.
charlotte has two really great, thriving soccer teams.

(never mind that "soccer" is a UK term) yet had never heard of soccer before 1994) are the squeaky wheels that the owners listen to, rather than the rest of fans. MLS is going to get to 40 teams and still now have relegation
Nope, they have 30 teams now but the maximum is 32
This is America.
