Allyza Pena Well it doesn’t necessarily “activate” vibrato, vibrato comes from keeping your throat calm and using only that, you’re not meant to shake your head or your jaw while using vibrato, what hes doing is a very unhealthy form of vibrato. But its not unhealthy as in its damaging his voice but its just not the right technique.
he just seems so emotional in all of his songs and it really shines through in the acoustic versions. you can tell he really cares about what he's singing about.

While the dude obviously has a great voice, the head/jaw/body shaking to create vibrato is actually just terrible technique. You don't gain anything by doing those things except for forming a bad vocal habit and warping the vowel sounds you create. It's also incredibly distracting.
