  • Hoopoes are widespread in Europe, Asia, and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar. Most European and north Asian birds migrate to the tropics in winter. In contrast, the African populations are sedentary all year.
The hoopoe inhabits a wide range of habitats such as heathland, wooded steppes, savannas and grasslands, as well as forest glades. The Madagascar species also makes use of more dense primary forest.
The diet of the hoopoe is mostly composed of insects, although small reptiles, frogs and plant matter such as seeds and berries are sometimes taken as well. It is a solitary forager which typically feeds on the ground.
Holes in trees banks or stonewalls provide the favoured nest sites. But they will use suitable nest boxes. Like those of most hole nesting birds, the hoopoe's eggs are pale and unmarked, while incubation is undertaken exclusively the by the female.
The Eurasian hoopoe is a medium-sized bird, 25-32 centimeter (9.8-12.6 inches) long, with a 44-48 centimeter (17-19 inches) wingspan. It weighs 46-89 gram (1.6-3.1 oz)
Hoopoes are partially migratory. Most birds in the north of their range go south for the winter. As do many southern breeding birds, but a few remain on the breeding grounds all year round.
