In the end you are the artist, it doesn't matter who ever the fuck expects anything. First of all impress and express yourself. If people appreciate it, that's fine...if not...doesn't matter...why? YOU ARE THE ARTIST!!!
Generally people appreciate those that fit in pleasing them. Opinions are surface level satisfaction to the guitarist. Why? Many not great musicians have millions of fans.
What matters is whether the guitarist is satisfied, entirely self referenced.
I started guitar in 1987. My main concerns is my progression. And my playing is unlike anyone in the world. I have a unique sound. My samples are in my channel. Perhaps i sound lousy. But no one can mimic my sound. Therefore i am satisfied.
The tools regarding odd and even number of notes per string influencing pick direction was life changing Justin, regarding alternate strict picking.
You are correct about using crappy equipment. My fender squiers frets are a bit worn. Fine. Deal with it.
As long as the frets dont buzz escessively im carrying on as usual. A cheap way for a guitarist to increase excitement is to use different widths and types of picks, picks wear out anyway. A 0.88 mm tortex pick feels very different than a 1 mm tortex or a 1.5 mm nylon. And, experiment with the picking hand in conjunction with using diff width picks, for example fan the fingers out like chris impellieri to increase pick attack, and at other times hold the three fingers not holding the pick in a c shape like Richie Blackmore, these small changes dont require a new guitar and offer small rewards by changing perspectives on how to pick effectively as the hand position and pick width interacts tremendously with strict alternate picking. Lastly doing sweeps, only use strict alternate picking.

Okay, so it isn't just me... great tips! The thing I realized is that most amps in the store that are plugged sound like absolute dog shit for metal, so choose carefully before you try to shred! lol..
