If a Spanish tourist went missing in Rotherham , or London or anywhere here, would the media really give a shit and would you report it? You know you wouldn’t. I doubt the police would be out looking with helicopters and drones and making as much effort as the Spanish are that’s for sure!!

I'm Spanish and, trust me, if a fellow Spanish citizen went missing while hiking in another country, it would be slightly covered by Spanish TV for a couple of days and that would be about it.

I*m a random person, yet, i actually used to work as a mountain guide in Masca, so i have a little bit of a clue about things up there, but lol..surprise surprise, nobody wants to hear what i'd have to add to this puzzle. I'm from Spain too though I live in the UK and don't watch Spanish TV anymore, but since I'm always watching videos from the Spanish news media on RUclips (El País, El Mundo, LaSexta, etc) I get Spanish media in my feed all the time and I haven't seen a single video about this missing guy. Actually, the only Spanish media I've seen talking about it is the local news in Canary Islands TV and a Spanish true crime youtuber (Triun Arts). Even my flatmate, who's also Spanish and watches Antena 3 Noticias every evening while having dinner didn't know about this case when I was talking to her last night (first time she heard about it). I'm not saying it hasn't been covered at all, but it's not big news by any means (I also don't see why it should be big news in Spain...).

I have a Spanish friend who spends quite a bit of time in Tenerife. He said that the media do not see a UK tourist missing as headline news, simply because they have more pressing issues to be reporting that are more important to the average Spanish person.
We don't even report our own. It's only worth reporting if it can get views.
But it's not because he's a tourist, but the circumstances of his disappearance. It's not a Spanish thing but the reality of news media in general. They decide what's news-worthy and what's not based on how much drama they can sell to the audience. If this was a missing child, trust me, it would be covered every day in the Spanish TV. I'm Spanish myself and when Madeleine McCann went missing it was all over the news and talk-shows in Spain, even though she hadn't disappeared in our country. People will relate more to a missing innocent child that is in danger than some missing hangover young adult that had just came back from raving hard and somehow managed to get lost in broad daylight because he couldn't wait for his bus.

Still , lets say he didn't hallucinate but was wide awake and just desperate to get back to Las Americas, it is exactly as you say..it was day time..there was traffic all over already and the buses in Santiago del Teide would have been passing every 40 or so minutes. But considering that there will have been PLENTY of traffic already at that time of the morning ( Most visited village and National park in Spain (right along with Las 7 Cañadas..the in flowing traffic starts right around 8) So, people have seen him. Someone has seen him walking even after Ofelia and he could have gotten a LIFT with someone!! What is there to say that as he discovered cars passing by that he didn't stick up his thumb to get a ride with someone?
But if he was hallucinating who's to say in which barranco to look for him ( I worked as a mountain guide in Masca many moons ago. I know those mountains and all its paths very well)
The Spanish have already been vocal about their feelings towards British Tourists. With the British Media it doesn’t help.The Spanish Police know the island so we should support and respect them. Let’s hope it doesn’t become political like Madeline McCann did.

It does beg the question. Why do some cases, Maddie McCann, Jay Slater, Nicola Bulley etc get so much media coverage, while the vast majority of missing person cases get none.

I think Joe is speaking rubbish concerning the locals.. I was just talking about this case with the girls who work in the supermarket (canarian) and they all have kids Jays age. Thats where I heard “Jay was stealing at the club” ….. don’t know how true it is, but one of their daughters told them.

Search appeal got only 6 people in response. None of them his family or friends. Despite her using fund money to fly people out to help. So if they're not making it public knowledge by telling people, by putting up posters or helping with the search what are they doing all day? GMTV stated they tried several times to talk to his friend but she just says she's " too tired"

It is clear that all the locals know about the case, and it is also clear why no one wants to talk about it. Hopefully, the poor dogs will be left out of this senseless search in the future, it's bad to see them walking around without foot protection in that area. Every tourist looks at the map before traveling somewhere, he obviously knew where he was going. And he also had to realize that they had traveled with him by car for almost an hour, so there was no way he would have started back on foot.
