- Everyone makes mistakes speaking other languages - even polyglots. We asked attendees at the Polyglot Conference in Budapest to tell us their most mortifying mistake in another language. From confusions about French preservatives to German toilets, we got secondhand embarrassment just listening... 😬 yikes.

I have so many.... but my worst was that I spent a couple months in Ecuador doing an agricultural internship studying a specific Ecuadorian bean that they call "chocho"..... then I flew to Mexico to have vacation afterwards and told everyone I had been studying chocho and that's when I learned it meant p*ssy in other Latin-American countries.. so awkward. I didn't know why they kept asking me to tell their friends what I was studying and giggling at me.... I can relate with the guy who wanted to go into the toilet lol.
i have two: i started learning spanish over the summer at a restaurant and i thought spanish had a subject pronoun for "it" as "lo". so after eating a lunch a lady cooked a meal for me, i said "gracias por la comida, lo fue muy bueno" (ignoring the fact that i didn't match the gender of bueno/a) and she thought i said "no fue muy bueno"!!! ahh it was so embarrassing
the second one was when i was talking to someone online and was referring to someone we knew who was non-binary and i just didn't know what to say and ended up embarrassing myself so bad but we're good now 😭
this video definitely makes me feel more comfortable with making mistakes because it's a part of learning
