I liked the vibe ethan gave off. A lot of his dialogue feels like someone fed up with everything to do with his current situation. He's pissed, and while the writing may be bad for the lines, the voice actors did a phenomenal job.
It's always bad and cheesy in RE games. That's part of the charm. It's like Charlie hasn't played a single game in the series. RE4 for instance, considered one of the best games of all time, has super cheesy writing, with Leon making a ton of puns and bad jokes all the time. Heck, when first entering the village, he goes "Where did everybody go? Bingo?" So dumb, but gold.
i honestly loved ethan. he kinda reminded me of leon, but just not badass and much more mysterious. i loved how his face was covered up, i loved his role in the ending, i loved how he egged on the main bosses to kill him, and i loved how his backstory made him a better character by showing how much shit he’s really gone through.
Its cuz people are used to that badass, pistol weilding protagonist when thats not the case for Ethan. Most people overlook him being just a normal guy that went through horrible stuff and now has to adapt with that horrible stuff
Resident Evil games feel like high production movie with good actors but bad writing, basically it's so bad it's good. I think what they tried to turn him into a relatable character and make it feel like you're actually him buuut they kind of just made him a bit too goofy. I'm still a fan of the series because most of the RE games are cheesy and I'm completely fine with that.
His dialogue is realistic, everyday people are not actors so people can't expect a normal person to have a+ acting skills, Ethan was okay in 7 but he really grew on me in this one.
I find it is scary to most people, but Charlie is just unfazed by horror these days. That, and he does the tactic where he makes scary things into jokes, which works to make things less spooky.
Plus the chat helps alot. Weather its showing him where to go, spoilers, or the company.
Its kind of hard to be scared when you watched all the episodes of Ataway general and people think its a show 😂
I thought the same. I played the doll house alone in the dark with high quality headphones and dropped my controller when that baby first threw itself into the hall.

I agree with most of the criticism, except for one big thing: I think Ethan's character was done so much better in Village. Yes, there were some cringey lines every half hour or so, but he actually has a personality in Village, and says lines other than "oh shit" or "fuck you."
This game made me feel a lot worse for him than RE7, and really hit home that Ethan isn't STARS or a Redfield. He's just a normal person that got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, but still doesn't lose sight of what's important to him.
And then, you know, *the end* .
Disagree. It felt like the devs couldn't figure out whether Ethan was a blank slate for the player to insert themselves into or an actual fleshed out character and he ended up feeling like neither.
@@user-vf3cb7vk8z There is a drastic personality shift, but I'd rather sacrifice continuity (RE 7 wasn't that tied to the RE universe anyway) for a developed protagonist. Ethan isn't completely forgettable anymore.
Yeah, I still think Ethan is a thin paper character but his journey as a father was very touching and in line with the themes. Great conclusion.

@@mekassah5288 true
I saw what was coming without it ever being spoiled for me in the first place. It was *_really_* obvious what you were going to be doing because of all those empty man-sized cabinets that were in almost every room. Not to mention that part, where you're walking around the halls in the dark, was basically right out of PT. Played enough Alien: Isolation to know exactly what kind of gameplay it was going to entail. So I was always mindful of where the cabinets were any time I entered a new room so I could remember where to go if I was chased. So not much about the doll section was particularly scary, and overall it was actually quite short.
It essentially just came down to spatial awareness, if you were more aware, then it wasn't going to be nearly that scary, or difficult.
@@mekassah5288 Which is okay because RE8 really doesn't try at horror, it really is more of an action game.

I'll have to disagree with the criticism towards the writing as cheesy and goofy dialogue has always been apart of RE's charm
Right? Like, would you rate RE4 lower after Leon responds to the big bads monologue with "No thanks, bro." ?
That's what makes it *good* .
@@ROBOTPETER101 Yeah but lately Capcom seems to be trying to make RE more serious so it was a bit jarring hearing the cheesy dialogue in this one.
RE4 knows exactly what it is, a fking awesome survival horror game full of over the top and cool shit, it embraces the cheesiness just like the first 3 games, that's why it doesn't feel out of place.
@@tricko8000 I mean, I'll argue that the games have certainly been fairly more serious, but only in the sense that Resident Evil 1 and 2 were more serious games by result of the main characters being completely new to everything, so all the goofy over the top stuff was still treated as terrifying threats. Poor dubbing mainly due to the time not withstanding, considering even the much more (overall) serious Silent Hill had that problem.
Heck, even by the end of 7 Ethan had basically started acting more in control and even acknowledging the somewhat silly nature of the horrifying situation he was in, so the shift in Village is, if anything, less drastic and sudden than Leon's shift in character from 2 to 4.
Hell, Ethan is barely a step away from being Deadpool in how little he needs to care about dying at this point, I can see him taking a bit of the piss when he's threatened with it.
Really man, you’re forgetting when Rthan retaliates with a “you’re the one who’s cursed”

As far as the mainline titles go, 1 was terrifying back in the day, the remake was great horror, and 2/RE2make had its moments, but 3/3Make was pretty action focused. 4 is 4 and that's where it took a hard shift towards intentionally corny and action movie-esque, and 5/6 went full Michael Bay, with 6 straight up being a DMC game in disguise as a RE game lmao.
7, imo, has been the only scary RE game for a long time, and even it begins to deteriorate (in a good way, imo) after you get into a chainsaw fight w/ Jack.
@@blackbob1576 Anything thinking RE games are supposed to be super-horror has never played 2~5 or even the side games. 1 was brand new for its time, and we don't talk about 6.

Very interesting take on Doll House, I personally felt it was much scarier than any portion of 7, barring the very beginning section of 7 with Mia.
100% agree. I get not everyone is gonna find something as scary as the next person, but RE7 never made me fucking scream out loud. And this one did make me scream. Not just the doll house section but other ones as well. (When the Lycan pops up when the note tells you to look out the window) I really isolate myself when something new comes out that I wanna enjoy. Especially something horror related. No lie, the baby part was scary. The moment we got into the practice, I saw a closet and immediately started getting into the Outlast mindset. We're here to solve puzzles and hide while being absolutely helpless. Though it may have been a 10-ish minute segment, it was genuinely nerve wracking. It's a slow buildup of a super tense moment. Sadly, the baby wont open the closet and doesnt roam, which wouldve been great features to add to make this setting even more scary.
Besides that, I share the same sentiment. The first part was good, but even then I feel like it was missing stuff. I 100% guarantee that there will be DLC to show how house Heisenberg became insubordinate. People loved him to death, yet the only details we get in game is along the lines of "Yeah, I hate that Bitch Miranda using your Baby Weapon." There were details I heard about him, and I want those flushed out... along with Moreau's, but Heisenberg first.
While it definitely wont be scary for everyone since the "scares" are just enemies you can shoot I think its unfair to say that the game doesnt build tension
