    MY FELLOW PARADER
In NYC while on the run from the law, I would dress up trying to feel better about my situation. One day I was parading while window shopping down Madison Ave. and I could not help but notice a man in a creamy white suit, bright white shoes AND white hat parading the opposite way, heading toward me. As he passed, I turned my head to get a last look and then it clicked in my mind. I just saw Tom Wolfe. I'd first read Electric Kool Aid Acid Test while at La Puente High ; I was no acid virgin but at that time most of its fiction was beyond me.

4:30 I like Tom's observations about culture in the 80's. Consumerism and commercialism and ostentatious displays of wealth became de rigueur in the mid 80's. I think it's because there was so much new wealth. The people that had wealth back in the 40's and 50's came from a background and tradition of appearing modest and polite ( maybe as an after effect of the depression too ). The new wealth were achieving it strictly for it's own sake. It was 'He who dies with the most toys...wins' attitude. Still exists today to a degree but now it's all about a suspicion of wealth, 'The wrong people have too much money and it belongs to us so they should just hand it over' sort of attitude.

Still sorting out my feelings on his passing. Then he walks in with those shoes. It gave me a chuckle.

Funny how neat Letterman looks in the first one and somewhat bedraggled 3 years later. In the first one he doesn't let Wolfe say a word about his new book.

This is the second celebrity death (first was Margot Kidder) that I learned about by seeing you post a video about them.

I liked what TW said about not being involved in film versions of books. But ... Bonfire became the biggest disparity between quality of a book and film in the history of films of books.

So down to earth, yet such a brilliant writer. He will outlast Hemingway. BFoftV is a classic that defines the Naked Apple rotten to the core!

No .. hemiingway changed america. Tom wolfe hasn't. What I say is from tom wolf himself. Thatès the drama of usa.
