Dave is enthralled. I don't think I've seen HST as comedic as in this interview, though he was always a jokester, a merry prankster, and all that. And he did return as a guest years after this.
So you haven't read his books, they're some of the funniest books ever, some parts of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas had me HOWLING, The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved is also a gem in terms of comedy.
@@DaniboyBR2I think hes referring to HST in person not usually being this open and humorous. Like i know in his interview with Conan hed hardly say two words, and only when prompted. Mainly, most likely, because he was absolutely hammered and perhaps even blackout drunk at the time of the interview. But of course, as a writer, Hunter is going to be far funnier and far better at comminicating his thoughts and jokes. As thats the case with nearly all writers. Stephen King is pretty good in interviews and at speaking in general, but when it comes to many writer's, if not most, they are often times awkward or at least no where near as comfortable conversing in person as they are with the written word, of course.
@@ibrown3KC Age kicked him like a mule, he didn't like it and he said so in his farewell note.
@@DaniboyBR2 was it age tho? or, you know... all the substances
I never realized how well Johnny Depp played his parts until seeing this.
Johnny Depp hung out with hunter S Thompson.
Depp spent 2 years shadowing Hunter before the movie to learn every single aspect of his mannerisms
Right? It's one of my favourite films, but when I first saw it, I thought it was a parody. Johnny Depp absolutely became Hunter S Thompson. (Saying that, I also love the Bill Murray portrayal of him).
@@anthonymcbride855 in his basement
Became so close, johnny helped “scatter” hunter’s ashes
Seeing those two together is just wonderful. Thanks for this great piece of priceless gonzo history
For all the youngsters seeing this for the first time go watch the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
@@MrBuketmanthat’s usually how they find him I recommend the bill Murray one “where the Buffalo roam” that one came out way before the Johnny depp one both amazing but I prefer the bill Murray.
Hell yeah. I never really realized how awesome David Letterman was for a significant portion of his time on the air, he always just seemed like the better late show host out of him and Leno, but little pieces like this here and there. I finally realized how fxxxin great he was when Warren Zevon was dying and he gave him an entire show to perform 3 songs and talk with him in all the guest slots. Living Legend. While Carson is probably the undeniable "great" of all the late night talk format shows, Letterman is definitely the most diverse, genuine and respectable one as an artist and human.
@@dowhatiwantc7637 "Hunter? Ain't nobody doin' no huntin' in here! This is a PARTY, not a SAFARI!"
@@joshuanipps9106 Leno didn’t have a tenth of Dave’s passion imo. I agree ☝️
"You have to settle your scores or people get sloppy so to speak" - WOW. I love that:)
The fact that Hunter could go on national TV, with Dave Letterman, and hold his own while heavily medicated, (for mortal men), still amazes me. True respect for the man.
90% of his guests are heavily medicated
Peak David!
I think he fit right in, I bet more than half the people working there are self medicated
@@Originalred04 meanwhile... Hunter peaking on acid.
It's called a loser addict but hey let's put people like this on a pedastil.
This first year of Late Night brought out so many historic guests..this(and Dave of course) is what made such a great show.
I'm waiting for the historic part to happen.
@@petermgruhn are you slow? or just young
I love how Letterman is tiptoeing to not get dissed on a subversive level where he has a hard time to make a comeback. He appreciated his guest in at least that way, giving him props. He makes Thompson make all the work, and dude delivered!
I started watching Letterman in 1993 when he moved to CBS and I was 18 years old, and I liked him a lot. But I never truly appreciated him until I started watching old interviews like this one.
The nbc years are the best guests
Letterman kept his studio notoriously cold, yet Hunter is sweating his balls off
His blood's too thick for the Letterman studio
How do know

@@MarquetteTheFourchetteGood one! 😂
What a great personality that man was! Bigger than life. And seeing this video makes me appreciate Depp's work "In Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas" even more. He was spot on.
depp didnt do him justice
Great biography ❤️ I remember the day he passed, living in Chicago. It was a shock and we named a drink after him at the coffee shop.
Hunter Thompson. A one of a kind American Legend! Dave, too.
Priceless, a real gem to have this recorded. Letterman was always my favorite, nobody has ever come close to his style, personality, and humor. I miss those late nights watching his show. It was always fun.
He was far more easy going and less ego centric back in this era. Seems more lad back and less scripted.
hes far better at old age imo...in his late shows he talked too much and acted like a creep.
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.
But it never got weird enough for me..........
There he goes, one of gods own mutants. Too weird to live, too rare to die.
Don’t take any guff from these swine!
Good Lord, I was waiting for this. I miss Hunter, such a wild and beautiful soul.
He was nothing but a drug attic psychopath.
@@crazycat1345 yes he was, and thank God for it
What lord? He and his wife were killed and deleted from existence 23th of May 2013.
Sorry excuse for a man... can't stand animal abusers
Can anyone imagine Hunter Thompson in this era? The world would not have been able to handle it
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.
@@unknown.mp4
But, it still never got weird enough for me. 👍
He was in this era. He only died in 2005.
Truly interesting people no longer exist. Sad
To be honest, I think the current state of the world would've gotten the better of him. Suicide all over again.
This man was a hero to humanity. God bless him
"There are certain dark aspects of that contract." 😂
I think HST would've been more at ease if Dave had let him ignite his gift.
Did Hunter ever appear on any other talk show? This is epic!
He was on Conan.
Johnny Deep played this part ingeniously in "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas". To Perfection.
What did this Johnny write ?
@@bubstacrini8851 He wrote home, often. 😜
Thank you for uploading Hunter.
He really is a nice guy and an athlete
A supernatural wonderful shy creature this man of higher regard than most.
Dave was extremely patient with Thompson's shenanigans here. 10 years later, he might've been a bit more snarky with him.
Shenanigans 😆 👍
Perhaps, but it's never a great idea to poke a bear like HST. His idea of fun was shooting at homemade propane bombs.
He was very snarky with Hunter in their last interview
Like you know anything.
@@lewisc215 You seem like a nice human being. Ever get tired of the constant negativity?
Makes me realize what a dangerous man Dr. Hunter was. I believe he really did sue that guy. I wouldn’t want to be on his bad side. I’m sure it was easy to get there. God bless you DR. Hunter!!!!! Such an intelligent man with all the time in the world to get even. God help us.
Yes... he could be very dangerous.
@@dejuren1367 Ur point?! He "could" be very dangerous. AND he was - 😂 to himself! He blew his brains 🧠 out!! So, life is dangerous. Tell me something I don't know.
Damn; Johnny Depp played him almost perfectly.
I wanna know whats in the “edited for tv” segment.
big same. show us the uncut interview, you cowards!
I was wondering if it was a commercial break they snipped out. But, yeah, would be nice.
i love when Letterman moves the fireworks and Hunter doesn't take his eyes off of them for a second. I can just hear the wheels in his brain turning. lol. He wanted those firecrackers bad. Like Charlie wanting candy out of Dennis's pocket.
Letterman must have been thinking, "Damn, I have just met my comedic match". 😂
Hunter is a LEGEND!!!! That's all I need to say
More like a sorry excuse for a man. I hate animal abusers
There’s a striking moment in the film in which we can see Hunter tormenting his pet bird and you say you sometimes felt like that bird. What did you mean by that?
He had that bird, Edward. And he’d rattle its cage or hold it and squeeze it and say, “Edward, there’s no bird god that will save you now.” And sometimes I was the bird. I’d internalize what he was doing to that bird. Because I was the innocent abroad, you see.
20 century Mark Twain. Tremendous one liners. Some of the best ever written. And an absolute bad ass absurdist stream of conscious with amazing composition and timing in a memorizing cadence. That was Raoul Duke.
Johnny Depp killed it with the fear and loathing
Huge fan of hunter
The best reporter ever
okay what the hell is that weird, high pitched, kinda buzzy/screechy sound at the 3:57 mark???
Wild, had no idea this existed!
Dave throwing pencils and note cards and breaking glass
Clearly talking about the Rum Diary.
Imagine how many views the hunter Thompson American Express spokesperson ads would get today
I have never heard of this Dr...I need to look up this guy. Has an unique way of talking.
Watch the movies Fear and loathing in Las Vegas, and Where the buffalo roam. Preferably having a few beers before and during.
Then read his book of letters
Boy are you in for a surprise!
Forget the movies!
Read the books
Especially The Proud Highway and Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72.....then Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.....
Then watch the movies!!!
whenever i see the real man it just reinforces how freaking good JD was as portraying him.
Bill murray did an excellent job as well. You should check out “where the buffalo roam” if you haven’t.
Legend
He knew Johnny would give him a proper send off.....
And Mr Depp came through perfectly for his dear friend.
The Rum Diary being referenced here is pretty cool

Asking his cigarette into his coffee cup 💀
He's so high lol. RIP H.S.T.
Hunter: "About the hundred and eighty eighth hour."
Dave: "Yea..."

He was so coked up during this interview. Him admitting to two weeks of no sleep in 1982 in Florida only happened because he was being fueled by Carlos Lehder’s finest marching powder, if only to be a fly on the wall of the house during the time he wrote the Pulitzer divorce case for Playboy. I mean to be a journalist and have people follow him around to write pieces on Hunter himself shows how much character the Doctor had.
"Does anyone else see those bats?!"
Maybe when the ether wears off
Amazing
Johnny Depp had the look and the voice down pat.
I can be the only one that is not flowing this? I mean maybe it’s over my head.
Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪
I wonder what was edited out
Read the book if you've seen the movie and haven't read the book.
Hilarious, thanks for the upload
I didn't know he was on Letterman, either!
Quite a few times. Conan too.
For 19 years I've kinda wondered what HST would think of things.
And given where the US is right now, I kinda think he would like to be around to comment and give his thoughts, on, right now.
I haven't seen, heard or read much objective reporting this century.
Certainly no Gonzo. (Apart from Borat, maybe)....
HST, rest in peace.
Hunter be high on somethin!!😂😢😮
A true psycho…but friendly
Dang Johnny depp nailed his impression
This gives me so much anxiety he is definitely tripping here he is having a hard time gathering his thoughts and staying on a topic
I always really wanted to know what Letterman thought about Hunter and if they got along. They seemed to politely kind of but heads a little bit?
Buy lesbians and trumpets with gold card...- HST
Hunter for president
i got the joke it's also nice to see letterman uncomfortable
What an interesting mind
I don’t believe he was tripping on any type of hallucinogenic drug. He might’ve done some cocaine but that’s as far as it goes in my opinion.
Even seasoned trippers would most likely have a difficult time holding down a conversation when they’re tripping balls on hallucinogens.
I would bet that was whiskey in his cup, he could hear the ice in it and I don’t think Hunter was drinking ice water.
Hunter S Thompson doing a great impression of Johnny Depp…
Gonzo Journalism
so talk show chairs have always been the most uncumfortable chairs ever?

That’s a dangerous road to ride. Mind the curves.
@@lucasthompson1650 I like that that! must be a dr. Thompson quote. And if you came up with that good play! I'm going to steal it😆
@@johnsheetz6639 I was quoting Col. Depp, but I’m not 100% sure it’s his, although he was quite hammered on wine at the time and had been a fountain of proverbial wisdom all night, no reason to think this one didn’t just roll off his tongue like all the others.
You have got to be kidding - what , Bob Crain wasn't available?
Hilarious - you almost got us

You have to be in the same space as this man to get anything out of it. His mind is not in this at all. He admitted it in the beginning. If he remains awake for the duration of the interview it's a win situation.
Brilliant and insightful and how sad it is he is gone....what a waste.
Dave's still alive.
8:35 😆 I don't blame him
For the time allowed, Dave had the best interviews but who could get going under 10 minutes? Certainly not guests like Hunter
It's like Hunter S. is reading the subtitles of what he's gonna say, lol
he's so self conscious and neurotic, it's probably about true. The words are popping into his mind and he is reading the words
Thats definitely the best way ive heard it put...
Hunter isn't "coked up", he's trippin' balls, as he always was on Dave's show. He's fairly functional for a man on hallucinogens.
He loved mescaline I guess.
No, in the years that Late Night and the Late Show were airing and having him as a guest (80s/90s), it was cocaine and hash. Mostly cocaine. And a lot of Chevas Regal, the 12 year old stuff, always with a handful of ice cubes.
You're right that he was always fairly functional no matter what he was on. I don't think he ever "quit" anything, so on any given day, sure, he might have had shrooms for breakfast and smoked DMT for lunch, you know, as a palate cleanser. 😅
Edit: in the late 90s, opiate painkillers were added to the mix due to his health issues.
@@mantia39 Everybody loves mescaline.
He's probably on both.
😂😂😂😂
My GF in 1991 was an assistant to John Cusack, i went to her office one day and she showed me the faxes that HST sent Cusack. They were hardly legible hand written ramblings that came out of the machine on an 8' scroll. Incredible mind he had.
haha interesting

Some people become crude when intoxicated, some violent, some sleepy, some just spew nonsense.
But there is a special kind, who become the wittiest, quickest (in a sense) and most whimsical charmers. And Hunter was a king among them.
HST's Late Night interviews, along with Andy Kaufman's and Harvey Pekar, made for captivating viewing. Buy the ticket, take the ride.
You have exquisite taste. Those three are the holy trifecta of Letterman Guests. I had the honor of interviewing Harvey Pekar once on the radio, and it was one of the greatest moments of my life.
