When they were filming the movie "Two Lane Black Top" I was working at Baskin-Robbins in Santa Fe. I got to meet James Taylor when he stopped in for some ice-cream. I served Mr. Taylor a scoop of Pistachio Almond Fudge. He was a very kind and humble gentleman. I will always remember the kindness he showed to me, a 16 year old "future" fan of James Taylor. Great guy he is, I will say from that encounter.
I know somebdoy who was introduced to him by one of his siblings. He said Taylor was looking at the bottom of his glass and looked at him after the introduction and said " Hello so and so it is very nice to meet you and thank you for your support now please go way . "
Great times in 1971... 16 years old and these cars were running the streets!! Buddy had a "55" Chevy 4 door, we would cruise main in it.. All Detroit steel running the streets, hell ya'!!!
Born and raised in Detroit I would sleep on the couch and at 2.00 in the morning it would be quiet then I would hear motors revving and when the light turned green all hell would break lose I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it we were close to Woodward so this went on a lot long live the old Detroit muscle!
THE greatest car guy movie in history. The first full line of dialogue comes 6 minutes into the movie when Driver says, "That Plymouth had a Hemi and a Torqueflight".
I would respectfully disagree. When you combine a popular past time like cars and racing with pop culture, magazines, illustrations etc. it becomes a force of nature, such was the car culture of the 60's and 70's. It was about two guys who were seeking the freedom of the open road and using street racing as a means to that freedom. The theme for this movie is not unlike many others, where the brooding loner is just yearning to live life on their own terms, without interference from a complex society. They didn't have a malicious desire to hinder anybody's happiness per se, but they had to race, to stay on the road.
It’s about everything you mentioned literally, and figuratively about existential angst and feeling like you’re wearing no pants. And it’s good to see James portaying Not such a “sweet baby.”
Yes that is true. They took the 55 chevy from two lane black top and prettied her up with a shiny new black paint job and chrome wheels. One of my all time favorite movies as a teenager and up until now "American Graffiti" 👍
70s was such a great, great era! Truly when you had more amazing high performance motors/cars coming out, or at least being built up by auto fanatics for cheap, and it was the true era of “Street Freaks!” I mean 50s/60s ruled as far as true high performance vehicles, cause that’s before the gas BS and etc that ended the “muscle car era” in 1974, but 70s was so groovy in the fact you could see a great big mix of street rods out racing and cruising around.
I downloaded this and watched it a couple weeks ago one night, really cool film man, toked a nice joint and drifted away back into the 1970's even though I was not around then,:~{ I could somehow feel the essence of the times in certain scenes just by watchign the sky and how they talked, very dreamy and nostalgic.
To cast musicians in main rolls was great made the movie more real and Dennis Wilson was never quite the same after meeting the Manson family. You don't need a multi million dollar budget to make a classic or cult movie.
The way the relationship between GTO and Driver and Mechanic developed as the movie progressed definitely had an effect on me. I though about it constantly for days afterwards.
whoever talked james taylor and dennis Wilson into being in this film , I'm glad they did because we get to see those two when they were very young, before drugs and fame destroyed them both
@@bigredc222 Quite a bump though, took him about 15 years to get over it. And he went through surgery on his vocal chords as a result of his habit. He was lucky to survive. Dennis wasn't so lucky.
Was in college at Southeastern Okla. State University, Durant, OK., when this movie was filmed about 30 miles down in road in Boswell. My brother-in-law (at the time) owned a service station in Durant. The '55 Chevy was always there being worked on. At least twice, he drove to Boswell to work on it before a scene could be shot. Loved it though, [the 55.] Was loud and fast. Loved the movie, saw it at a Drive-In Theater in Durant, always thought the ending was real weird, though.
My son found the Special Edition of Two Lane Blacktop on the 2 d.v.d. set on the internet. It has a copy of the original screen play and the script as well. I usually watch it 3-4 times a week. I never get tired of it. Especially the racing scenes. I got the chance to go to Lakeview Dragway near Memphis,TN. in the early 70's. As usual progress always triumphs over history. And now "Big Willie" is gone too. At least I've got the movie and the memories.
@@joethaler7921 what a shitty thing to say to someone. Why don't YOU get a life instead of crapping all over someone else's. Does his enjoyment of an Amazing Film have any influence on you, whatsoever? Apparently it does. I hope you can find your happiness somewhere.
I liked Dennis in the movie Two Lane Blacktop - One cool movie. I still hear Dennis saying - The Carb Jets are not breathing in the 55 Chevy. Also, Dennis said Take it easy man - your gona kill us and You passed them 5 miles back!
At 2:22, the same car passing by horn sounded like "Duel" when Dennis Weaver said "You want me to hit that car head on." That's what the TV Movie looks like. Also it released the same year in 1971.
When I saw this movie in the theater they showed a movie short before it of a guy doing a fancy pin-stripping job on a car. Was a stop action animation that made it look like the pin-stripe was just growing on the car. Any notion what the name of that short was? It was very cool!
@signoguns Yes. Dennis pretty much distanced himself from Manson after December 1968 and left Manson in his house on Sunset Boulevard. After the Tate/LaBianca murders in August 1969, Manson visited Dennis to ask for more money- which Dennis gave him (yet again). Manson was in custody from October 1969 (after the Barker Ranch raid). TLB was filmed between August and October 1970. Manson wasn't actually convicted until December 1971 though, so it must have been on Dennis' mind while he was filming this, that Manson may have still walked free.
And Dennis laid a Cliff Booth style beating on old Charlie when Manson threatened Denny's kids. As Van Dyke Parks once said, " After meeting and working with every major male rockstar of the 60s and 70s, I only met one who was a true alpha male, and that was Dennis Wilson."
An existentialist masterpiece. :) Some quotes from IMDB: "What it lacks in entertainment value the film makes up for with its heavy-duty philosophical and existential themes. An economy of language wherein nothing in the film is "explained", the tacit praise of the prosaic, and the almost stifling trust in the present moment, all speak to the human heart, as the voice of nihilistic romanticism. There is no freedom here, no escape, no change, nor redemption. The landscape horizon never gets closer. It's the myth of freedom and the embrace of alienation. No matter how far you travel, you never actually arrive." - Lechuguilla "Sparse, tacit, stark and entirely denouement - a perfect depiction of America at that time in history. Brilliant depiction of early post-industrial America; its ennui and dull disillusionment: Two hugely powerful cars in a half-hearted race to an ambiguous finish line. Going nowhere fast. The action is sparse, dialog very spare, and rural pre-interstate America drifts past in dull, desolate splendor. Three of the characters almost never speak, and the fourth almost entirely tells lies. There is no resolution. No goals are accomplished. The film even abandons the race. No one changes or gains insight. It's a perfect film." - Slow Code A film that tires of looking at itself and just ends. :)
I don't agree with Lechuguilla's reading of the film at all. Two Lane Blacktop simply acknowledges the truth of our reality; it's all out of our hands.
Makes me wonder if James serenaded the cast with songs from his "Sweet Baby James" album. With all due respect to James Taylor, I find it sad that he's the only cast member still living.

This film is not about cars, racing, or even the people featured in the film. This was about life itself and what little control we have over it.

Only when we can't think rationally to figure out reality, do we have lives that are out of control. Blame the school system.
