    Catherine O'Hara is so real in this scene that it's almost (but not quite) too much for the comedy. She really walks a very fine line in this performance.

      jackal59 I know, but it makes it so great. I think my favourite comedies are the ones that transcend humour and become their own form of art. Think of the Edgar Wright trilogy, all of those were taking the piss out of horror, cop and alien movies whilst becoming decent horror, cop and alien movies. There’s something funny about that in and of itself.

      She’s truly tapping into something that is comedy but is also a couple steps beyond. I think she’s showing us what it is to be an actor

    When I first saw this movie I thought he was the one who misinterpreted the kiss but all these years later, I think both of them were equally affected. They both know each other too well to be mistaken.

    • @katarinatomac4376
      @katarinatomac4376 3 года назад +13

      i agree, i think they both projected their own respective feelings onto the other person, saying it was the other one who took the kiss as more than it was, when in reality it meant more to both of them

      I think she wanted it more than Mitch. Mitch on the stage is very different than Mitch offstage. During the performance he was smooth, romantic, even in love. She started to fall for that again. But in reality, remember he cheated on her, got stoned, and didn't really care. If he had really pursued her after the big show, she would have dumped her husband. But he isn't a guy who would do that. That is my take, anyway.

    I’ve always been of the opinion that if a comedy is funny it’s funny, obviously. But when a comedy teeters on the line and becomes what it’s satirizing and does it better than the actual material? That’s art. And that’s what this film is, it’s funny but it is art

      @@Tropicalpisces There's also 'Mascots,' a newer film they did, AND a brief but hysterical sketch they did for the Academy Awards one year in which they played a group of people in 1939 who just sat through a test- screening of 'The Wizard of Oz.'
      They did take a rather big hit a couple years ago, though, as one of their core actors, Fred Willard, passed away. I miss hearing his jolly voice in movies and shows.

    I gotta watch this one again. I think I’ll appreciate it more now in my 40s than I did in my 20s.
    Regarding Guffman, the first time I saw it was in college in the movie theater and I thought Funny but forgettable.
    Then some years later my roommate had it on DVD and we watched it so many times that year, and now I think Guffman is just as good as Tap, which of course is the standard-bearer.

    Catherine O’Hara’s performance in this clip is brilliant...you can see the disappointment in her eyes as she performs a terrible song in some pissant little convention
    She can’t cope with Mitch’s instability, having been heartbroken by him before.
    She knows that her husband is a bore and has a deadend career, but it’s stable.
    She’s made her choice and part of her really regrets it...in her own way she’s as fragile as Mitch

  • @jimfath

    These two scenes cut this way show the contrast between how grounded O'Hara played her character in the film and how totally silly Levy played his. It really let the air out of what could have been a fantastic arc. I enjoyed the hell out of it but Levy was a cartoon for sure.
