I think we need to also acknowledge the fact that the reason many of us (especially black/ brown and or curvy girls) are able to do good make up, understand how to dress for your body type, take good pictures, edit and make good videos etc. is precisely because people aren’t gatekeeping. A lot of women learn their beauty habits/ secrets at home or from their culture. Not everyone had a mom/ auntie to teach them Make-up. Or if they did maybe not in the style they like. There is empowerment in teaching young girls that the beauty they see takes work, that every Instagram/ tiktok influencer has beauty rituals, poses, lighting, workout routines, diets, etc. than highlights their beauty even more. Y’all remember when Victoria secret models were pretending they eat a lot of pizza??? Should we start gatekeeping the truth about our diets and exercise as well? I do think there is power in mystery and not over sharing, no one should be forced to spill all their secrets. But let’s be real It-Girls will never go out of style, people are sharing more but there is sooo much that goes unsaid especially for really successful influencers/artist etc. Curation is the key. You might learn from one person but then combine it with something else you learned somewhere else. I have also noticed a trend of very beautiful women acting relatable (“oh look I’m a lazy couch potato, ugh I can’t afford nice things”) when it’s very obvious they workout regularly and have an intense work ethic and people eat it up! We want aspirational people to make us feel better (buy this product to be pretty, oh look I’m gorgeous but I’m just as lazy as you, etc.)
I agree with both parts, as someone with a mother who didn’t teach them things I’ve learned so much of everything on the internet and I’m so thankful for it. We do need to be taught to surf it better though because it’s so easy to be misled

the people's princess seems like a slightly more self aware form of the it girl, and like a step toward social maturity. i wonder, still, how different they end up being from a parasocial relationship standpoint, and if a people's princess in her accessibility and vulnerability presents a more realistic front, one less conducive to the mythologization that pairs with parasocial situations. interesting and fun video :)

I feel like tiktok only is partially responsible for one of these, that being thrifting. Flipping culture and people like Gary Vee blew it up and tiktok (and yt shorts) was the platform that enabled them. The others are just high pressure limited availability sales tactics (also not needing to pay to store inventory) already prevalent in the market before tiktoks ascension

also interesting how gatekeeping is being used in this instance. It's more a marketing tactic than an actual recognition of reality, used as a way to flaunt being a 'hot girl' without the negative press associated with being so self-proclaimed. It makes the person doing it seem more amenable and approachable, and makes it harder to question 'why' someone is sharing these links. And it is, of course, as your rightly point out, for the money.

I think that believing you can become more well-liked by imitating popular people is a side-effect of mass self-consciousness, and being overly self-conscious misses the point of why people are more attracted to someone who doesn't go out of their way to be well-liked.
I think that we are somewhere in the middle. On one hand, it is great that people are so willing to share things like beauty tips or where they got their clothes. But on the other we need to stop feeling entitled to certain information just because it's public and, we need to stop sharing excessively personal things and then getting mad that people ask about them.

The real problem is how narcissistic we are all getting…I mean the only reason why we want to be such individuals or it girls in the first place is because we want to be seen above others? And people can’t do that if we are all so similar. Some people find value in simply being different but also feeling like they are better than others. Some people…in fact most people, cannot afford the luxury of curating their style and simply are just trying to survive especially in this economy. I understand that there is a time and place for conversations of all different topics but truly I cannot deny that the narcissism that sets the foundation for these topics is quite pitiful.

This got me thinking... what if people are tending toward narcissism in order to financially survive? For example, people see this hyper individualistic strategy work (make money) and then want to copy it because of said money: not necessarily due to inherent narcissism or wanting to be seen as "above others", but a will to survive.
When the economy encourages this kind of stuff is when we need to rethink our economy.
@@useruseruser501 I completely agree with you. There are many reasons for people displaying narcissistic traits whether intentionally or unintentionally and what you said Is definitely one of them. Unfortunately looks do matter in this world and people who look the best will get better treatment and opportunities. It is a vicious cycle and an unfortunate part of humanity but I do believe that due to everyone being able to access good looks more that the being good looking is actually becoming the norm and people are now looking at personality or skills if you really want to be different or stand out. So maybe society had to peak as whole when it came to looks and materialism in order to figure out that this way of living is not truly satisfying and now we are going to see changes on what people to perceive valuable or not. This is what I hope for anyway. But like all things in this world, things come in cycles and seasons 🍁

A major aspect of this that’s tone-deaf is the fact that products aren’t fully accessible to everyone. People share what they’re using because it works for their skin tones, unknown indie brands, etc. Ifs not a “lack of individuality” to ask someone what blush they’re using. Girl Bffr 💀

hmmm this is a really interesting take!! i agree in general, especially with how it ties into capitalistic tendencies. at the same time, as a trans person, i think the anti-gatekeeping trend can be really helpful for trans people who are coming into themselves and learning a way to present that they were never socialized into! i also think there are middle grounds between "tell no one anything" and "affiliate links for every product you've ever breathed near." for example, giving helpful tips as to how and where to start thrifting or reputable websites for specific styles! basically i think it's more nuanced than either approach being fully correct in all situations. loved the video!! thanks for the food for thought :>
This is beautifully said and thank you for bringing up the aspect of being in a certain community that may lead one to feel the need to gatekeep for safety. I agree that there's a middle ground though.

love the video!!! I don't disagree with anything said, however, I think another aspect to consider is how hostile the internet has gotten in the last few years. If I see something I like and google it, the odds of it being a badly made dupe, drop shipped and upsold, or just straight up a scam are much higher than it was 5 years ago. And I'm saying that as someone who would consider themselves actually really good at navigating the internet. I could imagine that it may actually be difficult to find an item, especially for a younger demographic of people. (And I will say I actually have seen quite a few people gate keep what their wearing- for the purpose of making more money of course. For example, leaving links on a separate platform that's either pay walled or allows access to affiliate links)

Something that a $60 lipgloss and intense nightly routine can ensure, so long as you buy the right moisturizer. It seems to continue to play into the idea that beauty, especially for women, is something that is bought and sold, when in reality beauty (in general) seems to be something so much more than that. very interesting and very late-stage capitalism feeling :')
I feel like it's just modern marketing. People tell you that you can achieve a certain lifestyle by getting a certain product is no different than commercials or magazine adverts.
@@kellygreengables3936 Sure, but the mass saturation of these sorts of things is probably at a greater scale than previous marketing ventures and is coming from "peers" which encodes them with a bit more force. When a girl your age is using all this product and looks beautiful and tells you that you should do this, it's a little more direct and likely plays on an individual's shame a bit more than normal adverts which are far easier to just ignore. Plus, there is a huge offloading of labor onto the individual creating the content that ultimately saves the company money and likely doesn't rightfully compensate the influencers. Also, even if it isn't that deep, advertisements are still autonomy denying ventures which usually seek to play on some fallacious line of reasoning to get you to buy something you likely don't need, so consumerism in either case is present and is still gross and sets tones for what people *should* do based on nothing but a company's bottom line. and idk but i don't want a company or my peers who want to make money being the one setting normative stances for society.

I’m so impractical on this topic. Yes, gatekeep you’re signatures, you’re individually, you’re secret sauce but because everything is moving from brick and mortar to e-commerce most people don’t know where to shop for hair products, makeup, clothes etc but I will say people are so entitled to not share also.
Unpopular opinon but whenever someone asks me where I got an article of clothing, I say "It's thrifted". Sometimes, that's true and sometimes it's not. I'm not gatekeeping anything, they can look at my tags if they want to (if the artcle of clothing even has them) but I want people to spend their money at thrift shops, that could be doing good for the community, rather than become prey to hyper captialism where huge clothing conglomerates contribute to landfills. Thrifting has taught me to think outside the box, consume less and curate more. Instant gratification is a huge problem and I think gatekeeping fixes that. It puts the onus on the person asking to be interested in the style enough to do their own research. Ideally, people should be making their own clothes to cut out the middleman but we're not there yet as a society. That's why I've taken up crochet as a hobby.
So it’s okay for you to contribute to hyper capitalism by buying these pieces in the name of “curating” but not others ? Thrifting is not realistic for a lot people including plus sized individuals or those of us with an unconventional body type.

I think the gatekeeping happened in real life. I’ve known supposed It Girls who used acrobatic level skills to avoid telling people where they bought things (especially clothing) because they didn’t want to be copied. That was back in the day though, now it’s much less common.
Great takes! I think the influencers who are smart get a huge following by being *authentic* (as authentic as you can be with a camera) and treating their audience like someone they are familiar with.

Thank you for this video!!! I'm so burned out on ads and affiliate links everywhere. I want to curate my vibe now with consumable products or brands that are online ONLY, and not sold in stores (it makes it less likely to be copied or stolen/resold..which is i know sort of classist on purpose.) And for durables like clothes, more thrifted vintage items that are either rare or one of a kind, or items DIY, self created and bespoke. And hobbies that are uncommon and interests that are unexpected. I want to rebel against the ultra consumerist conformity that the algorithm is constantly chewing up and spitting out, turning us all into broke mush. So either way, whatever you get it would be hard to find, both online or in person.

Correction to chloe sevignys career start in the movie kids, she was dating Harmony at the time, he did not write the role for her, they had another girl they hired prior to Chloe who was from another area but she did not fit in well with the cast after a first hang out that they had to do for it. She was the only trained and more experienced of the group with acting (it was all of the main casts first time acting in this film) and she did not know any of the cast prior like the rest did, it quickly became clear she wasnt gonna fit into the film well due to this. So they dropped her and it was very last minute this happened, near the start of filming and they needed someone quick. Harmony suggested Chloe to the director as she also already knew the cast prior as well, she auditioned quickly and soon got the part.

absolutely killer takes! i came across a couple of substack pieces which float in this realm, mainly algorithmic vs human curation.
yeah, i think not gatekeeping in this context also leads to a lot of micro-trends (bc we have ready access to what 'everyone' is wearing) which we all know exacerbates over-consumption and fast fashion. if you always know where someone got something and its very easy to buy it, you feel like you can easily 'become' an it girl. but in reality, i feel like many people don't feel like an it girl after buying that thing, thus it goes out of style quickly and something new, something that will finally make you an it girl, takes it place. and the cycle continues forever.

I think gate keeping is kind of the wrong term here. It implies that you withhold Information that you were asked for in order to keep a perceived advantage or to hold other people back. I would however say that it would be nice to see people talk about selective items and not put a shopping list of their life in the bio. Then again I view influencers as one person magazines like Cosmopolitan or Vogue so giving out that information is their business. Consumers need to take responsibility for their buying habits and try to find a more personal style but that might be easier to say for me as I grew up without social media (I was born 88 ) and I probably can’t 100% understand younger people how have been socialised differently 😅

I don’t get it. I am someone who is a curator (not on purpose just something I noticed I do naturally bc my thinking is naturally different) and has a very specific style (again, not on purpose) that gets a lot of attention. Telling someone what I’m wearing or where I got it doesn’t bother me at all. I also have very healthy looking skin and don’t wear makeup so I’m endlessly asked about skincare and it doesn’t bother me. It gives me joy to help another person achieve whatever they want to achieve (in every aspect of life in fact). Even when seemingly *all* the girls at my school would start doing/wearing something after I did it didn’t bother me. I was flattered, I *liked* knowing I was a trendsetter and I’m still that way now that I’m older. I feel like you may need to see someone if you’re huffing mad or sideeyeing other women bc of your need to be the only one to wear/do/have a certain thing. If we’re talking about bw gatekeeping bw tings, then it’s a resounding yes from me bc the disrespect is real. Outside of that… chill out and see more value in what you bring to the world besides fashion/style and beauty. I mean, are you nothing at all without those things?

15:21 I think it’s more on the idea of differences being less obvious and common pieces being more impressive. You know one of the biggest examples of this is the iPhone. In America we’ve socially outcasted android users and inherently observe it is as negative difference despite being mediocre and almost meaningless. Another example is designer clothing, while certain pieces are not for everyone they rarely catch the glamour of others if they aren’t name branded. The death of the “it” girl as it relates to her customization is mainly how culture has become fixated on what’s perceived as of extreme value. Designer clothes are one example of that, among many. That being said if society was to accept and be generous to not immensely wealthy items the it girl would still exist even in the realm of social media.

this feels so silly.. asking someone where they got their shirt is bc 9 times out of 10, is bc it's exactly my style and i can't find it anywhere except like pinterest. people dont' have to share anything, but to me it always reeks of insecurity if ur so scared of sharing the brand. it wouldn't even matter bc half the time, it's not afforadable to most people. ur not losing originality by telling someone where u got ur niche dress from. it always gives me the same vibe of when artists gatekeep the program they use and it's just paint tool sai or adobe photoshop lmao. it's never some unknown program or hardly ever one that isn't known to be good. are they'd that afraid if someone found out what program they'd used, they'd do it better?
i will say, when i think of gatekeeping fashion, is with lolita. i saw a fashion influencer call, what was rlly just a mix of cutesty and alt (like punk/emo) fashion mixed together, gothic lolita. like?? if ur gonna call it lolita, pls make sure it's actually lolita fashion. lolita clothes in general, are very distinctive. i would not want to ever become mainstream. but i don't think it would. it's about being cute and feminine without being sexualized which is why it's not popular with japanese men. they just dont get it lol. and i would like it to stay that way. i think it would be ruined if it got mainstream.
but something to also make clear, is that there is a sheer distinction between influencers gatekeeping vs irl. a beauty influencer with 5 mil follows is obviously going to make a difference by sharing and promoting a certain brand. this is why so many things will stay sold out for weeks bc of influencers saying "you GOTTA check out this product". but also, makes it even harder to understand irl. i get it, if we are soley talking about social media. but is there rlly anything to lose by telling someone on the street where you got x thing?
and no, no one has to share anything. but i just don't get why it's such a bother to people.
