🐱 💉 THE CORE KITTEN VACCINE is important for a reason! The momma cats milk has antibodies to protect them while they're nursing, but the second their done nursing they lose those antibodies and can get very sick if infected with any of these viruses! So we vaccinate them to protect them.
🌟 The core vaccines for cats are FVRCP (a combo 1 shot) and Rabies.
1) The youngest a kitten can have its rabies vaccine at 12 weeks old. Most rescued kittens will have rabies vaccine already done. I advise my ragdoll owners to have this done at 5 months old since they can be more sensitive to it. Unless they're going out side early!
2) The other most important kitten vaccine is FVRCP - a core vaccine with 3 vaccines in 1!
a. It stands for “Feline calicivirus” - causes upper respiratory issues
b. Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis - Feline herpes virus 1 , all cats have this
c. Feline Panleukopenia - Also known as feline Distemper virus - which confusingly this infection is caused by a parvovirus. It is deadly if cats or kittens get this. And really important for you kitten to get its monthly boosters of to prevent it.
There is an FeLV that is not core but if your kitten will be an outdoor indoor cat you do want them to get this vaccine.
💉 📆 The vaccine schedule:
- Kittens will get a vaccine at their breeder or the shelter starting at 6 weeks old then boosted 3 weeks later at 8 or 9 weeks old before they leave! So they may already have 2 vaccines before you get them!
☝️Sometimes only one if it was done at 8 weeks, but im happy if they have at least ONE before leaving.
Then when you get your kitty at 8 - 10 weeks old from a breeder or the shelter. You let them settle into your house, make sure their eating drinking and playing and eating and growing.
A month later or 4 weeks from their last vaccine on the health certificate, or papers from the shelter.. they get their next round of shots with your vet.
☝️Kittens will be boosted every month with FVCRP - 3 times. Then they are done with the kitten series of vaccines.
The rabies is done at 12 weeks old or older. Then you boost them yearly at their yearly vet check-ups.
On my monthly kitten check-ups I also give Strongid a dewormer and Ponzuril which is for coccidia a protozoa that always infects kittens.
As a tip: I always recommend spacing out the rabies from the FVCRP because kittens and cats for that matter are very sensitive to vaccines.
🤒 🐱 Some kittens stop eating and get a fever.
👩‍⚕️ And ragdolls are very sensitive so I always recommend giving 0.1 ml to 0.2ml of Dexamethasone a steroid at the time of their vaccines to help prevent allergic reactions. You can ask your vet about this. If you don’t want to do a steroid you can ask for a Benadryl injection.
Every vet has their own views, I don’t want to step on any toes. But personally, I love a small steroid shot and my kitty patients do great.

Same here . Got my kittens at three weeks old. Now they are three years old . No vaccines no problems . My previous cat only had kitten vaccines two lots only. Before I knew better. Never seen a vet unfortunately disappeared st 10 years old . A male cat adopted me at three years old . Previous owner said he hadn't been vaccinated. Also never been at the vet. They all spend most of their time in my back garden.

My cat has only been spayed and seen only have gotten the required vaccines to be adopt. 16 years later, still haven't seen a vet.
