On Monday, my 13-year-old tuxedo, Phinny, had a reaction to his rabies vaccine. My dad and I used the video on administering pills to make sure he took the dose of baby aspirin and Benadryl the vet prescribed. I’m not saying it was fun, but it did help him get better! He was SO sick and I know he was suffering. Now he’s back to his usual affectionate, playful self. So, thank you!
I am very happy to hear that my videos are useful! Vaccine reactions are frustrating, but still better than not being vaccinated. Thank you for being a conscientious pet owner!
Yes, but not aspirin. Never give human drugs to pets! Your vet can pre-medicate your pet with an antihistamine, which will reduces risk of a vaccination reaction.
@@HelpfulVancouverVet Dr. Burstin! I have to tell you a few things. 1 - I love how gentle you are with your pets, it's incredible 2 - I used to hate cats until I let my sis who was living with me have one for her bday 10 years ago, Winston is the best cat ever 3 - since I've been watching you I've been wanting my own cat and my bday is Monday so I'm adopting one for for myself 😁 Have a great weekend!
0:34 In case anyone here is unfamiliar with cats - pretending to doze off (slowly closing their eyes for a second) is a sign of trust. Lancelot really likes this particular 'Clumsy-Loud-Cat'
People always say that animals are "brave" when you give them medication, or take a blood sample, or place a catheter... but what about the poor vet staff who are risking life and limb to do it!? I think we're the brace ones, and our patients are the patient ones :-).
Could you please do a video on how to help a cat lose weight? More and more cats are overweight these days and it's very difficult to make them lose weight, especially since it could be harmful if done incorrectly.
You finally found something Lancelot doesn't like modeling! He's such a good kitty though! Another suggestion for a "treat" is to brush the cats. Maybe I've been lucky, but my cats have all REALLY enjoyed being brushed and when they get to the geriatric phase and are not so food motivated (like with kidney disease, etc.), having a brushing session available as a treat helps doing meds or sub-qs less traumatic. I had a 19yo who would wait in the bathroom for her sub-qs because she enjoyed the brushing afterward so much. Thank you for your videos!
I just want you to know that I always always watch RUclips videos on 1,5-1,75x speed to save time but I always watch yours at normal speed bc your voice and the cats and everything is so calming. Not rushing that through
I don't have a cat (yet) but I love how educational these videos are. I'm just over here furiously scribbling notes for the day I bring home a little furry overlord of my very own. ♥
Lancelot or me? I have a cold but Lancelot is doing great! We cleaned his teeth yesterday and he was wondering around the clinic loopy from the anesthetic. I'm going to put up some "high cat" videos on my Patreon later this month because he is so damn cute.
@@HelpfulVancouverVet That would be priceless, Dr. Uri! When I was 11 years old, we had our new kitten spayed. When she managed to stand up, still "loopy", she lumbered back and forth very slowly like she was drunk and then finally her back end collapsed like she had lost her balance. I laughed so hard, I think she was embarrassed. She managed to muster her energy, went running to hide underneath my bed, and didn't come out for hours.
I love how the manufacturers expect you to get that exact amount in their eyes😆 The same with ear drops! My vet said the same as you, just get something in there. Easier said than done though😒😾😆
Kinda is! It is really comfortable and I think it looks good on camera, no? Although I do have "squish that cat" T-shirts available as well. Its hilarious wearing mine to a party and having people ask me if I've seen the video :-)
I have two beautiful kittens (they'll be 1 year old May 1!) and your videos have given me confidence with taking care of them. I cut their nails and brush their teeth myself, and if they ever need medicine, now I feel like I can be a good parent when they're sick, too. Also, your positive energy and love for animals is infectious! Thanks Dr. B! :)
I've had and continue to have multiple cats who require meds, injections and eye treatments. Somehow their cooperation never fails to amaze me as if they know I'm trying to help. There is a lot of love and trust going both ways and we always heal.
Lancelot, what an angel. Can you maybe do a video on how to get a cat in their carrier to go to the vet without them FREAKING OUT the entire time they’re in there? One of my cats is incredibly triggered by it.
thanks for the helpful tips! especially the info about the eye-squinting! luckily my cat trusts me unconditionally and always holds still when i have my serious face own. he never rejects medication or is mad at me or fussy. i'm really grateful for our special bond!
I had to administrate eye drops to my cat once because he used to sharpen his claws onto a wooden surface and once got a wood splinter in his eye and overnight he kept rubbing his eye with his paw and in the morning the eye was inflamed. The first couple times it was pure hell, he wouldn't allow me to get close to that eye no matter what. Then I developed this nice trick of distracting the cat with a toy so that he would lift its head and just drop the medication from a higher position directly into its eye, worked like a charm :D Took a couple tries to get the aim right for the medication tho!
I had to apply glaucoma eye drops twice a day to our sweet geriatric former stray, for the last several years of her life. It was hard at first but she had a great temperament and soon grew accustomed to it. I had infant twins during this period and was sometimes doing things in a sleep deprived haze. One morning I went to apply the eye drops and after I moved past the petting/reassurance stage, the cat was just like "omg! Wtf are you doing?!" It was very, very hard to get them in, the drama was intense. What is going on?? I wondered....and then realized I was applying them to the wrong cat!! Poor thing, he was loving the attention until it suddenly turned into a horror show for him
If only we had had your videos back then, lol. They wouldn't have helped with the sleep deprivation, but the tip about feeding your patient immediately after is excellent! (The twins love Mr Pirate, btw)

Dr. B -- Is there any reason we canNOT warm up the tube of medication before administering it to the eye? That way it won't be so cold and startling. I do that with the IV fluids I give sub-q, and my cats seem calmer because the fluid is warm. Thanks for your response. And thanks so much for your vids. They are great. --nina.
Yes, the drugs in the tube may become deactivated by heating. Room temperature only for eye medications. Different story with fluids since they are just water and salts, so warming them up in a warm water bath is not going to do any harm.

HE KNOWS ABOUT THE SQUISH THAT CAT MEME
Did he acknowledge it, or did he just say “squish that cat”? Cause squishing the cat is a constant in his cat videos, he says it a lot to remind us.
