DIY: Build your own Home made Solar Oven super hot 350 degrees F (176*C)

- In this video, I'll show you how I made my home-made solar oven that can reach up to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (or 176 Celcius). And that's in the Spring. In the Summer, I can probably get up to 400*F or more. The secret here is insulation. I also avoid using plastic, paint and other sealants like silicone, glue, or rubber (which is hard to build this without). Everything inside the box subjected to high heat is natural wood, aluminum, porcelain, and glass. That way I can avoid cancer causing chemicals and most importantly it doesn't alter the taste of the food.

Scaling the design avoided a lot of trial-and-error. Good idea!
As a tradesman contractor, I've used solar in a VERY cheap way using leftover foam board insulation with the reflective side. I would cut the basic shapes to create a square bottom, angled sides, and simply shove #16 common nails through each piece and into the others, build time about 3 minutes, to warm up my lunches.
I like your wire tie / folding idea, and and will use that or my next one, so I will have a permanent, portable unit that won't take up much room in my pickup bed!
Use some Mother's or MacGuire's type metal polish on your aluminum and see even greater heat.

For my three science classes in high school in California IUSA) from 1955 to 1959, I built a parabolic dish with plywood, wire and aluminum foil to cook a hot dog, a solar water heater with a coffee can inside a plywood box covered by a copper sheet on which were attached (how I cannot recall) copper tubes, and i cultivated green algae in a fish tank with carbon dioxide bubbling. I dried the algae and made rather bitter tasting cookies. Now I need to make one of your solar ovens. I also have lots of very old articles about solar energy in all its different forms.

That’s one heck of an impressive solar oven! Very nice. I’m planning to make one for my camping trip. Mine will need to be collapsible in order to fit into the camping gear. I think your design can be adapted fairly easily. I love it! Thanks for sharing it.
Wonderful video. Ive seen a lot of these videos with ppl trying to build the worlds largest and other gimmicks and you never actually see them cook the food. Love how your videos show you cooking meat and rice and then actually eating it- two notoriously difficult things to do well in a Sun oven. Great job.

DIY Solar Oven
I remember years ago (somewhere around the late 1960's), reading a book which I had checked out of the local library, which had complete "DIY" plans (including actual dimensions) to make a solar oven out of sheet metal. - The oven box itself when built, was around 14"(width (front to back)) X 15" (in length) X 12" (in height). - It (the box), was painted inside and out with a high temp flat black engine paint that would withstand temps of around 500 degrees F (for better heat absorption and distribution). - It had a 1/4 inch glass plate installed into the panel on top. It had a hinged metal door in the front side (just like a real oven). - It had 3 or 4 folding sheet metal panels which were highly polished (towards the box side), attached with hinges around the top edges which could be positioned towards the sun to direct the sunlight down through the glass top into the oven box and onto the pan, skillet, etc. which was placed inside with food. - I remember that it had small vent slots (cut into the metal) to keep the inside pressure (due to excessive heat), stable to keep it from cracking the glass top (but after all these years, I can't remember where they were positioned at (but I think they were on at least 3 of the sides)). - The reason I mention this is because I have yet to see a solar oven made from metal, which would stand up to rough abuse (out in the outdoors camping world), which would last for any length of time. - Most of them for sale on the commercial market now-a-days are usually flimsily (and cheaply) made out of cardboard, which probably wouldn't last for more than a few uses. - Oh well, so much for the (supposed), "cheaper the better, and throw-away", modern technology. - Anyway, there are the basic dimensions, if somebody decided they wanted to try and build one for their own use. - I take no responsibility for any burned fingers, or other personal injury's (if incurred), in the building, or the use, of such a device. - P.S. The author who had built it himself, said it worked quite well, and a lot better than he expected, and it did stand up for many years of use, and abuse.

I cooked rice today at 90 C. Came out perfect. You don't need this much heat for rice. It just takes longer. I let it there for 4 hours but 2 are enough. You could bake bread at 350 F though.

If the power is out, the crock part of Crock-Pot's could be put to good use, if they are dark. Would save buying a separate pot.
You could probably cook dried beans, but it might take the better part of the day.

I have the Global sun oven, your design looks similar, but different. my Global sun oven gets to 350 degrees F. I also have the Solarvore Sport solar Oven, this one is Lower height, but is wider so I can cook two pots side by side. I think using your building technique I would Like to build a Solarvore Sport oven uses a Plastic Lid, it is limited to a temperature of 300 degrees F max. But if I were to build one using a Glass lid so I can get its temp higher up to the 350 degrees, I could have another higher temp oven I think having both types is a Very Good Idea
Thank you; you gave me some really good ideas. Trying to figure out how to reduce our over all energy costs at our home. I can suggest using old refrigerator shelves; they are tempered glass and gives you more heat and safer to use. You could also make a solar heater this way for the winter. You would need to crack the lid opened an inch so the heat would rise up and out to heat a room. Solar panels are expensive and even making them from scratch is expensive if you are on a fix income. I have four metal boxes that I am going to convert into solar heaters. I also am going to take some old glass windows I have and make pizza and bread ovens out of them. The way we are having storms that are knocking out the electric for sometimes days at a time. We are all going to have to figure out ways to cook and keep warm. Solar Ovens are not that complicated and everyone has items around the house to make one fairly quickly. Also if you have water hoses; just painting them black; buy black ones instead of the green. Then lay them on the roof with black boards under them and set your timer for 20 minutes and check the temp and if it is hot then run to the kitchen or bathroom. In Foreign Countries this is their hot water heaters. I was reading about a women on You Tube that was trying to set up a mini green house outside a window for seedlings. She discovered that just by using green house plastic the temperature was almost 400 degrees and she could take frozen meat and dried beans in a blue metal roaster and cook her dinner for 5 o'clock. It was amazing how so many people are discovering ways to save energy to make our foot print so much safer for those kids coming up. God Bless and keep learning and sharing everyone.

If you use stainless instead of aluminum it should say reflective longer than aluminum probably a life time ! I like how big it is .

Very nice done. I think maybe I put door on back big panel to get food out easy, no take off glass first to get food. I like what you do. I think man that 350 degrees is so hot I cook big roast meat in there make my woman very happy cause she no cook good. Thank you to much for this solar food.
The wall is 3 layers with fiberglass insulation in the middle. If you make a door, it has to be airtight or heat will escape. Not easy without the use of rubber, plastic, or caulk which again, I tried to avoid in the first place.
Nice design, especially on the reflectors. I wonder if the interior sheet and two extra exterior sheets of glass make any difference. I suggest testing that. Double pane windows work because of a gap between the panes, otherwise it's more like thicker glass.
It is good. However, I think it will be more safe to add a thin aluminum frame with handel around the glass so we can lift without cut our hand or drop the glass by mistake. Thank you for share your project 👍
