- What happens when you ignore the serve rules of table tennis?
The service rule in table tennis is not clear.
It makes many confused for both players and umpire.

Vladi is the role model of clean serves. A true professional.
I always admire "I am the handsome man in the mirror" serve that Samsonov use. With the really high toss, this serve is so deceptively difficult to do and return. (´。• ᵕ •。`) ♡
Thats why I love him so much.
trufax
All of his modern serves are super clean
To be fair, judges are in a terrible position to really be able to tell if a toss if vertical, if the ball drops behind the head hiding it. If the receiver can see the point of contact. To really determine that, they'd more likely have to be behind the table vs way off to the side.
You barely see a player who doesn't serve a fault serve if you have to apply all the serve rules.
That’s probably true but the throw straight up if we actually meant it had to be EXACTLY up then it’s impossible to get a normal serve.
That is so true. Most of my sidespin serves involve at least a bit of deviation in the toss.
Maharu Yoshimura is one the worst players when it comes to clean serves
Most of these umpires are just doing their job, compared to the majority who has allowed to let the serve rule become a joke. And then they are being harassed for it.
serves should be called false way more often. there are so many false serves out there... you dont have to overdo it like the referee in the video with a simple backhand serve but there are a lot of people out there who hide their serves
The backhand serves of Steger were completely wrong. He didnt throw them up in the air, he just let it drop
A thousand likes for showing the cleanest server ever, Samsonov. IMO he is the fairest player of all time. No wonder he won so many fair play awards.
The man with the stache is the great German serve killer. Nice kazoo music, Em.
if we can keep it seriously. I think one of the main problems in tabletennis is, that rules arent enforced to 100%. and that even in pro table tennis. in amateur level, even more people dont care. thats a problem a big one.
100% People get used to throwing the ball up with a little angle and whatnot, and when someone actually enforces the rules and calls fault, everyone is booing them.
True. Even one player in the video says it "before it's fine, why now?". We need more strict umpires.
About time the players are being pulled on this.
Samsonov is the great player and human
Wow! Perfect toss!
At a low level, after some faulty serves I called my opponent a cheater. I didn't know the umpire was his young son!!!
You did the right thing anyway.
These rules should be enforced, that's what I've always thought. It's supposed to be a very nearly straight up toss, and if there's anything about it that even puts a little doubt in the official's mind, he's supposed to call it a fault. That's how I learned it.
If the players are unbothered then there's nothing to call. As long as you don't hide the ball completely, throw the ball to the racket or do a blatant caught serve, everything goes.
Players should be able to send their serve video to the official before game to see if it is illegal.
1. Ma Long's serve is almost always illegal due to hiding the ball behind the head. While it sounds like the umpire is faulting this serve from the height, it appears from the full clip that it is the angle that is the issue (as for clip 2). There are some players who lift the ball (pretending to throw it up) and essentially just let it drop - this is illegal and would have been a better illustration.
2. I agree with the commentator that Such's throw-up is within the usual tolerance and it is notable that Gardos also thinks so. It is an area where the regulations should imho be clarified. There are many serves where the horizontal distance covered is much larger than for this one but are not called as faults.
3. Very difficult for us to tell from this angle whether Steger's backhand serves were over the table or not. He does appear to throw the toss backwards so it could well be that he presented the ball over the table.
4. The umpire is 100% correct on these serves - the ball clearly falls behind Steger's head. It would be great if more umpires were willing to call these serves as faults. It is simple cheating. Saying that it is not possible to make a table tennis serve without hiding it behind the head is just ridiculous.
5. This is clearly an illegal serve, both because the toss is >45% away from vertical and because the contact point is hidden behind the body.
6. Amateur match - this comparison is just silly.
oh,you know everything. you are the god😄
I'm sure Ma Long never hides the ball by his head when he touches it, it's impossible to do so. The one called fault was hidden on the way drop but shown to his opponent when he hits it, so it's not a big deal. Also if this specific rule be widely applied, I'm sure more than half of nowadays players serve illegally all the time.
Nice video, so many people even
professional player toss the ball with a big angle, that's really ridiculous.
One simple solution, Hawk eye camera's. With a measuring system of the throw height and throw angle of the ball
Yes this should be used, however the umpire still has to make a spontaenous immediate call right when it happens. This is the beauty and charm of live sports, if the umpire were to wait a minute to review footage before making an informed call, it would reduce the entertainment of live sports.
@@SyenPie Not sure if hawkeye has been implemented for table tennis but it shouldn't take a minute to review. The US Open removed line judges and used hawkeye to make all serve/line calls and it's instantaneous.
@@Reck1025 oh wow didn’t know that. But the main umpire still makes live calls right? I think pingpong would still be the same, since line judges aren’t as necessary (it’s very obvious if the ball grazes the edge versus never touching)
@@SyenPie well in this case Hawkeye could be used to make sure the serve rules (height etc) are followed. In the US open Hawkeye made all the calls and the players could not challenge.
For hawk eye, you can use the rule similar as volleyball. You can have two chance to challenge umpire. If you challenge success, you still have 2. In badminton, similar rule.
maybe we can use camera to clarify whether a serve fault or not like eagles view.
Somewhere at an amateur match caught me off guard 😂
This foults are correct. And the Umpire need to be strong to complete ignore the noises of the people who dont want that calls. Umpire has the last word and as player you need to respect the laws.
you will become a pro!
I've player vr ping pong (eleven table tennis) which definitely almost hit the nail on the serving rules.
I love the samsonov serve!
We're all gonna miss him...... 😭😭
@@kshitijmlfm5225 For sure!
@@kshitijmlfm5225 is he retired already?
@@sumandas9487 he had announced his retirement just before the Olympic games this year.
His tomahawk serve is illegal 100% of the time.
People claim that the ball HAS to have such a strong side to side deviation due to the toss hight.
Samsonov proves, that this is incorrect.
Ovtcharov does this on purpose to impair more sidespin to the ball because in the end, he just throws the ball INTO the racket.

HAHAHAHAHA!
Dude
Cant stop laughing here
Might be the weed thou ;o
Chad Samsonov has nothing to hide, and Timo as well, they are sportsmanship role model
Wrt. the first clip, that umpire was terrible. There were multiple points during the match where she didn't understand what had happened on the table but didn't let that stop her from yelling incoherently at the players, including one episode where she berated and then carded Maze for not serving quickly enough when he was waiting for Ma Long to get back to the table! By the end of the match, Michael Maze and Ma Long would just stare at each other in confusion trying to figure out what to do whenever the umpire made another mistake. It's a shame, because both of them played really well and it was otherwise an excellent match.
exactly, this is the worst case I've seen. I think that ITTF should focus more on the quality of the umpire.
The most fenomenal condition is when Jiang Jia Liang vs Waldner at 80's
The toss has to be at least 6" (15cm) above your hand. Can't hide the ball with your head (any part of body)
The problem is people think a particular umpire is making bad calls when in actual fact the others have been allowing fault or let serves to go unpunished.
We didn't need to see the Samsonov serve replay so many times lol. Maybe if it were him doing different serves during a match yes.
The fault is declared. After the first warning, the opponent will get 1 point. 🏓🏓🏓🏓🏓🏓
What are the serve rules anyway?
That umpire dreams was to be l
a Soccer umpire, so that he can give a yellow+ red card from his pocket.. Hahahaha
Haha :D Nice
Hugo Calderano, Ultra Clean.

Whats 's error / fault?
It is very obvious that these umpires have never played before. It is extremely common to toss the ball at an angle so that it is in a better position to hit it at, allowing the player to hit more serve variations. The vertical toss rule was to ensure that players do not toss the ball behind their body to hide the serve, but in this series of clips all of the serves are very clearly shown and not hidden. So these serves are every much fair and do not give the player an unfair advantage. In other words this umpire has no idea what he is doing.
The whole service rules need to be revamped. The Hawkeye suggestion was a great idea! The new system needs to be introduced at the beginning of the year to allow players to acclimate. I think thrown up at least 10 inches, no hiding of the ball at any time. The toss must be ruffly vertical. The serving hand immediately dropped away. One warning, then points there after.
“Ruffly” lol
삼소노브 굿
tsuboi server is also very clean as samsonov's
You have a good big channel. Please raise the issue of rating. The new one has been introduced for more than 3 years and is much worse than the old one. It doesn't actually work. This hinders the development of tennis players' skills. Everyone. Return the old one better. And fairer.
Nothing beats Samsonov for the most honest serve. Hehehe
I remember playing a guy from my club in individual tournaments when I was 18-19 y/o, the guy was over 40, with a lesser ranking, and the few times we got a though set, he was trying to screw me at 9-9 with totally cheat serves, which I refused to play every time, asking him to serve according to the rules, "even if the score is 9-9".
I always won 11-9 when It happened, and he got mad everytime cuz It was not fair play from a guy with higher ranking to do that in his opinion, LMAO
Screw that guy lmao

Most players fault serve and get away with it. The ball must go up as near as possible vertically, not in an arc towards the server.
Open your palm and lift the ball before you do any body movement. And don't hide the ball with your body. That is the legal serve.
The serves should be up and straight up. Some I see here are throwed with the angles. If the umpire is strict, he can call as fault.
Is the 2nd clip fault cause the ball didn't go cross court like in tennis?
No, you don't have to cross serve on singles matches. The umpire called it fault because the throw was not vertical, and the ball was dropping behind the server's head. Similar to the one at 3:06.
I hate the fact that in lower leagues umpires don't call any serves illegal, they are blind lol
prob why those guys practiced it wrong so many years...they don't know what is illegal. LMAO
No umpire can fault Samsonov serving ;-)
Iam watching
Can someone refresh me on the faulting rules(like when it occurs and penaltys) . I play for fun so im just curious
You must toss the ball 10 cm vertically, using an open hand, and not hide the ball at any point of your serve.
@@favhwdg thanks i wasnt sure if there were other rules
@@aest882 + throwing it upwards in a vertical direction, not towards yourself, or away from yout etc. You have to throw it behind the table, and the point of contact of the ball and the racket should be behind the table as well.
@@nikonone9091 alright thanks
I didn't even know there are serve rules
Of course there are. It's a sport with professional players, international tournaments, and so on. It's all governed by rules.
Has anyone seen Sun Ying Sha serve legally even once? :)
Serve vertically, not forward, sideways or behind - simple.
it's like players had about 15 years time now to learn how to throw the ball up straigt... still can't do it X )
I'm one of them
If you use high throw, it looks like more easy.
Werner Schlagers serve was incredibly illegal and no one called it
VietNam number one S2
most of the top players they hide and not a correct serve
Then they should change the rules? If the majority of top players do not obey a rule then probably it is time for a change?
If you are a very mean umpire. Then Samsonovs serves is just 98% correct. You can see in the first split of miliseconds that his thumb is covering the ball.
The rule says, that the ball has to be seen at everypoint of second without a bodypart cover the serve.
But it would be more than ridicolous if some umpire or player call this serve fault. :D
Remember my face 😂😂
The video examples do not illustrate the violations.
The first clip, watch the actual match. The umpire was terrible. By the end if the match both the players were confused on some the calls and lack there of the umpire was making.
that umpire is the worst
Less than you fortunately....
ITTF should make clear service rule.
🥶🥶🥶 The errors would be difficult to recognize (I know worse things).
From 3:30 it is clear!
Oh man, there is so much to pay attention to.
You can not point out the errors, that would be interesting.
The commentators are wrong. Rules are rules! The toss has to be VERTICAL to the floor. Up is NOT VERTICAL! Vertical means 90 degrees +-10 relative to the floor, not 45 degrees. The reason for the rule... spin can be induced during a non vertical toss, it is harder for receiver to watch/see the ball, the ball is traveling faster the a vertical toss.
Most of these fault services are now allowed
sadly, illegal serves have become the norm. table tennis has allowed players to ignore the spirit of the rules by straddling the line btwn legal and illegal serves too liberally. this is NOT on the umpires. what IS on the majority of umpires, is not doing their jobs, because its too hard, and the hardship is the result of the federations blind eye to this issue.
Who defines the rules? If the majority of pro players including the number one cross a line, maybe, just maybe, rules need to be changed?
Maybe I have an unpopular opinion…
I was playing tournaments as a teenager at the end of the 90’s with the old rules.
I loved those old rules, it was fantastic to hide the sneakiest services…
I really don’t like these modern rules, even though the matches might be more enjoyable to be watched….
So..... better follow the rules, you are professional player.
I am forever telling kids and their coaches to fix their foul serves early. Because if you don't you run the risk of being called out years later when the stakes are really high and you have no time to fix it.
disqualify the umpire!
🌎🇪🇨😃👍
Would not be an Issue if people could just follow the damn rules.... And at the pro lvl at that..... Like almost everyone here toss them inwards and hide them with shoulder
Lol ngl that guy in the yellow shirt will have his face broken if he played like that here...

C'est votre vidéo qu'on ne comprends pas oui.
the guy appeared twice and the previous guy should be disqualified as an umpire. any1 know how they are doing these days?
Vertical is vertical...an arc IS NOT VERTICAL!!!!!!!!! Vertical is 90 degrees to the floor...verticale means a right angle relative to the table or floor,. Anything else IS ILLEGAL. A server's toss has to be open palm and at least 6 inches above the table and unobscured for the opponent.
It is an illegal serve and it is time for the game to enforce the rule properly.. Tell the coaches to inform their players to serve correctly. SIMPLE.
i dont understand a thing here
Maybe umpire want to show that he is usefull umpire. Lol
1:10 definitely a fault serve I agree
Its not.
@@devpathak2555 you should always through the ball upwards in straight line, not towards you & also not away from you.
@@naveedalirehmani2959 You're kinda correct but the words say 'near vertically'. As per customary play, a little deviation, as long as it doesn't impact the serve is allowed. Even if in this case, we assume that there was a large deviation, then, since its not impacting play, a warning should be given. Its not a fault unless its clearly against the laws or is vaguely against but warned. Also the one after this was just a terrible decision, that late fault just is outrageous.
@@devpathak2555 this is exactly how other judges think and let this kind of behavior happen in the first place but not all judges will take things lightly,
This culture needs to change, and a fault is a fault no matter if it's clearly a fault or if it slightly goes against the rules.
@@naveedalirehmani2959 Tbh, it is physically impossible to get a perfect vertical toss, both biologically and with factors like air affecting the ball. Now, it is always up to the referee to decide if it is or it isn't against the rules by how close it was to vertical. Atleast 80% of spin serves use at least some direction of toss for the motion. I personally feel that when it's too close to call like in this case, the benefit of doubt should be given to the player.

Poor vid. Title is about rule but nowhere is the rule stated in the vid or the description. Hell, not even in the comments!??
When the service rules are unable to be followed by the MAJORITY of the players, even among the pros,to me they need a closer look and reevaluation. Surely the pros themselves try their best to abide by the rules,in practice and in matches but even they commonly make fault serves. Only one logical conclusion follows, which are the rules being too difficult to follow in its entirety. In my humble opinion, the requirement of tossing the ball up 15 cm is already enough, without being too strict on the verticality aspect of the toss(not easy to totally make it totally vertical due to table tennis ball being so light as opposed to say a tennis ball) and whether the body/head partially obstructs the ball. Rules that can't be followed by the majority brings into question the viability of the rules itself.
