- I am excited to share the self filmed video of my Colorado Shiras Moose hunt.
I took him on the 6th day. He was over 200 yards out when I started calling and I ended up shooting him at less than 10 yards away. He came straight to me grunting the entire way and stopped a few times to tear up willow bushes. It was an absolute adrenaline rush being that close to a rut crazed bull.
He is just over 50” wide with a gross green score of approximately 160”. I took him with a Blacktail takedown longbow. 50lbs. @ 28”. 11/32” cedar arrow and a 145 grain Eclipse broadhead. I have been hunting Colorado for over 30 years and he completes my Colorado big nine with a bow and arrow. Elk, Mule Deer, Whitetail, Mountain Lion, Bighorn Sheep, Mountain Goat, Antelope, Bear and Moose.
I drew a Montana tag this year, after 27 years. Haven’t tagged mine yet. Congrats to you
Good luck!
I’m only 3 years into applying for mine. Good luck bud
I just go to the store and by a moose tag every year here in North bc and go hunting if I had to rely on drawing a tag I'd move.
Dude!!! What a hunt! Thanks for taking us along… congratulations
Congrats on your Traditional Archery Bull!!
What a beast! Great shot placement to. Them nerves had to have been through the roof. Congratulations
I don't hunt large game any more. I lived in Colorado after USN and raised my family there. I'm in Waikiki now for the last 5 years. I've been fishing all over Colorado and have seen plenty of moose in the secluded parts. The first time I saw a bull I was fishing in a stream which was making noise and he walked right behind me! I froze! Saw my reflection in his eye and his chin was at least 5 feet off the ground! I could smell his strong musky smell. I was shaking this thing was so big and close! I'm not one of those idiots that run over to elk in Estes Park and snap a close up. I have the upmost respect for all fish and game. This guy just caught me off guard and I figured if I ran or moved crazy he could of easily stomped me! Anyway glad you finally got your tag and was able to get one! I got a bad feeling about the wolves coming to Colorado and I think it's a big mistake just so someone can take a picture! These are not Colorado wolves they are Canadian! Wrong species! They are going to ruin big game hunting in Colorado! I give in in less than 20! Get all the big game you can!!!
I couldn’t agree more. The moose population is just taking off and they are easy pray for a wolf. The majority of the people who voted to bring them in, have never even spent time in the wilderness! Huge mistake.
That’s what hunting is all about!
That was heart pounding footage!!
Thanks!
Great video. Sort and sweet. To do it with a recurve is awesome.
Excellent job! I know they are tough animals but I am still mind blown he stood that long with such a well placed shot that looked like it got more than adequate penetration. Absolutely wild strength!
Incredible hunt and footage! What an accomplishment! Proud to see our pack be a small part of an epic hunt!
Love that pack!

Nice shot and Great Moose !
Thanks for sharing and congrats !
Verycool thanks for sharing this proud hunter!!!
That must of been quite exciting, and has way more class then shooting one at 400 yards with a high powered Riffle !
You have RUclips crazy of shooting long distance on the brain.
From 1989 to 2019 I guided Alaskan Yukon moose hunts with all the moose shot at 200 yards or less and often around 50 to 100 yards because I called the moose from brush patches.
Some areas of Alaska long distance shooting can be done and even working in such areas I never seen the reason to let a client shoot that far when the bull moose are crazy in the dead in the rut so calling and bush scrapping would being a bull right up to you.
We also found it exciting to tease a bull moose into coming to us by watching what the bull did and often mimicking what the bull did would turn the bulls screw loose into anger to come and fight the other moose making the noises.
I also learned so much by doing this and watching the reaction to the bull moose, and you become a better moose hunter by observation what is happening.
Many times, the unseen satellite bulls show up to the calls look for cows they can sneak in then breed when the heard bull is off fighting so the hunter muct be alert to all around and to sounds or could have a moose sneak attack on you.
I have brought bull moose up to us from 2 miles away with calls and brush scraping.
Dream come true! What a Super Bull!!!
Congrats on the tag, video work and the hunt!! Very well done!! 👍😀
Thanks!
Almost cried myself to be honest!!! Congratulations
Absolutely AWESOME! Well done. I love hunting but its so so much more than the antlers. Great video and ethical harvest.

Wow, not a hunter myself but that is incredible. Congrats and bless that animal.
Wow, what a shot and a hunt! What a bull! 👍
Sir my hat goes off to you, there is a different kind of bravery that you achieve when you are 9 yards from a bull moose and all you have is a bow, anyway after 22 years of wait you got him, congratulations
Thanks!
That is awesome, congratulations!!!
That’s amazing footage! Congratulations!!
Amazing story! Congratulations.
That’s phenomenal sir I applaud you
Well done. Thank you for sharing.
What an experience, congratulations.
Wow! Bet it was worth the wait . !
That looked like fun, congrats!👍
Fantastic, great share!!
I’ll be honest. Even with an m2 browning I would be scared shitless to have a bill moose within 30 feet. That’s very impressive. Congrats
Thanks! It was pretty intense.
Nice job. Thanks for sharing.
Wow very nicely done sir. Congrats
Impressive my friend
Thanks for sharing what a rush.
Thanks for watching!
Yeah people say you can't hunt a moose with a 30-30 but it's okay to shoot a stick at them. Flucking brilliant!!
You don't know much about ballistics or penetration do you? A 30-30 cartridge is fat and expands unlike an arrow that will penetrate much more through anything that's not bone. 🤦♂️
Outstanding and congratulations
Awesome! What a beast!
Thanks!
congrats !Incredible finish
That's a amazing video , thanks for sharing and congratulations .

Turn up the volume and you can hear you stop breathing and finally start breathing heavy and fast after he took off! What a rush! They are so fn big!!l
Yes, it was an amazing, adrenaline rush. Thanks
Awesome!
Staring at you in bad wind . Too easy! Ha. Jk. Wow. Great hunt.
thanks, wind was perfect. They are nearly blind. As long as you don’t move, they won’t see you.
Now that was a Rocky Mountain High!
Congratulations
That was great. Matter of interest, what would you have done if, instead of turning broadside at point-blank, he'd put his head down and come at you through the thick brush? What's plan B? No criticism implied, it just looked pretty scary to me.
I have thought about that many times. I know that you could never outrun one. My plan was to be beside a big tree when I got a shot. I happen to be cutting through a big open Park when I saw him and I just ducked down and started calling. I had no cover at all. I honestly don’t know what I would have done. I feel lucky things went my way. I did not have a side arm.
Nice shot…..
How did you remain so calm. What an epic hunt bud
It was pretty intense!
Congrats great shot, great video, great hunt! 👍😉🏹🎯🫎 Bullwinkle down 😁 subbed too!
Nice! What broadhead and arrow weight? Also did you hear him tip over? If so, how long?
This is impressive!!
Thanks. He never go out of sight. I watched him lay down. 50 lbs. @ 28”. 11/32” cedar arrow, Eclipse 145 grain broadhead.
Nice Job
Way to go!
Intense man!!!!
Monster
Congrat on your hunt , for your longbow do you draw 28 in ?
Yes, 55 lbs @ 28”. Thanks
Great patience and shot placement.. Did it cross your mind to re-nock and shoot again ? Or you were confident in what you saw ?
I didn’t nock another arrow. I was confident I got both lungs. He went less than 100 yard’s before lying down. He was dead in less than two minutes.
awesome
What was your bow set up and arrow weight? Great video
Thanks. I shoot a Blacktail takedown longbow. 50lbs. @ 28”, 11/32” cedar arrows tipped with 145 grain eclipse broadhead.
Image stabilization would make that much nicer to watch
