Obligatory "monkeys and microwaves" quote from the book (referenced during Holden and Bobbie's radio chat):
"It killed humans, therefore it was a weapon. But radiation killed humans, and a medical X-ray machine wasn’t intended as a weapon. Holden was starting to feel like they were all monkeys playing with a microwave. Push a button, a light comes on inside, so it’s a light. Push a different button and stick your hand inside, it burns you, so it’s a weapon. Learn to open and close the door, it’s a place to hide things. Never grasping what it actually did, and maybe not even having the framework necessary to figure it out. No monkey ever reheated a frozen burrito."
    Monkey, Mozart.

@@josephdocis1488 Yes, I love it. And it goes so much deeper, I mean, when you think of it, it's not only about understanding what a microwave is really for. To get the reference, you (as in your civilisation) need to know what a burrito is, you need to know the concept of complex receipes, you need the knowledge how to source all the ingredients, you need to know about industrialised food production und distribution, you need to know what deep freezing food does and how to do it, about electricity to run all of those operations and then the most important step needs to be so obiqutous that even a layperson can handle the task of reheating.

The way Belters, Martians and Earthers go through the ring, really is a condensed lesson on how their respective collective cultures work.
Belters: they give a rousing speach about owning the void, celebrate a crazy idiot in love who got splattered jumping into an alien hole and then jump into the unknown with a battlecry on their stolen church turned battleship becuse they want a seat at the big boys table.
Martians: they don't tell shit to anyone, send in a probe to scout for dangers, then carefully and coldly move in not to discover the wonders of the mysterious alien artifact but driven by their "police" mission to apprehend a suspect, ignoring everything else and the possible damage they could cause.
Earthers: they send a bunch of random people including philosophers, priests and artists to the butt-crack of the solar system to witness the big alien thing and try to make sense of it, when things start going south, they send most people packing with only a bunch actually going through the ring while completely shitting themselves with half their people try to run away or "accidentaly discharging" their weapons.
Without telling you anything, they told you everything. Man I love this show lol.

When Miller was trying to describe what was in the center ball, he said something like "sometimes I know stuff that's too big for my head". This reminds me of a term I heard in a SF novel called "A Fire Upon the Deep" by Vernor Vinge. The term is "Godshatter"; it happens when you try to stuff too much knowledge or too advanced concepts into a primitive brain. The message or meaning can get fragmented and distorted.
When Miller was talking with Holden about Eros and Julie, they music changed and reminded me of the Home episode. Beautifully done.
I think Lovecraft would have liked The Expanse. I am so happy that you are appreciating it as well!

The official record should reflect what really happened: He died from an inability to reconcile his wholly irrational belief system with the reality that was presented to him.
Sad, but sure as fock not the insurance company's problem! Now, everyone with the same life insurance is collectively paying for his senseless act of cowardice. Not to mention that whatever function he served on the ship, should it be necessary for the survival of others, is now up in the air. His absence is risking even more lives! He doesn't deserve the lie that will make him a fallen hero, and his parents deserve to be reminded of what they might have started by filling his head with doom and gloom.
I would like to think that as we go out into the expanse, we might stop indoctrinating young minds with unsubstantiated nonsense... We need rational observations, not wishful fabulations, if we are to learn anything worthwhile beyond this tiny world. Let's leave the childish fables behind, shall we?

    Just a nomenclature check:
A sun (star) with its family of planets is a "solar system." When capitalized, the term refers to our Solar System.
A "galaxy" is a collection of solar systems orbiting a huge gravity well at the center -- almost always a Black Hole.
The "Milky Way Galaxy" is our galaxy, the home of our Solar System.
Our Solar System is one of 100 *billion* to 400 *billion* star systems in the Milky Way Galaxy alone (although the actual number is probably on the lower end of that range).
Every star we can see with a normal telescope lies within 1,500 light years of our Solar System -- a sphere 3,000 light years in diameter.
The Milky Way Galaxy is 100,000 light years in diameter -- so every star we can see with normal telescopes lies within barely three percent of that distance -- and the sphere is a *tiny fraction* of the Milky Way's total volume.

The Investigator is destroyed and rebuilt if he exceeds his operational boundaries. I think Julie was one of those boundaries and perhaps the memories weren't even available to him. He said he didn’t want to talk about Julie early on.
To manipulate Holden into doing what it wants, Miller disappears and the PM reprograms Miller with Julie memories. He reappears in a wistful posture for effect and reminisces about Julie. The PM is a manipulative bastard and Holden fell for it completely.

The name “Dandelion Sky” was what Alex called it in book 3, because it looked like being on the inside of a Dandelion before the wind blows the seeds away.

honestly it applies to 3 different concepts: the expanse of humans into the Solar System eventually out to the Ring past Uranus; then the strange space, aka The Slow Zone inside the bubble - eventually opening the multiple apertures seen in his vision, and the sheer number of stars to visit.
Also, that vision showed us all what a hot dude Steven Strait really is.. pale, perhaps, but quite the stud. And as a former actor I have insane respect for anyone willing to do that scene.

Spot on with the idea that this ancient civilization used the protomolecule as a sort of self-replicating entity (aka a Von Neumann probe) to facilitate automated construction of rings to connect back to this pocket space, acting as a sort of road-building mechanism for the galaxy (maybe beyond).
It's this reason most of the book readers have taken to nicknaming this civilization "The Romans".
But now you get to try and figure out what Holden's vision meant!

    • @MattNolanCustom
      @MattNolanCustom 26 дней назад +1

Given that the "probes" have to be sent physically, and at speeds that can get caught by gravity wells, I don't think any can have reached another galaxy, even in billions of years.

14:15 IIRC what i learned from a discussion when this came out: Suicides in the Military often tend to get judged as "accidental discharge while cleaning the sidearm", because that makes it a service-related casuality and thus gives an eventual widow(er) a survivors pension, while if it was ruled a suicide they would get nothing. It's likely that this is still the case in the UN Navy.

It should be noticeable that Proto-Miller can communicate with the Sphere, but can't control it. Proto-Miller is the Ring-building device still pursuing its programming. The Sphere is a different Protomolecule device with a different purpose, which the Ring-building device doesn't even fully know. Different devices running the same operating system, but different devices nevertheless.
Ashford would rather be captain, but he's aware that outright mutiny is an evil genie that can't be stuffed back into is bottle.
It's very possible to write about a character acting in their faith merely as a means of explaining the motivation of that character, without it being a substantive issue of the overall plot or a mechanism of the writer's personal viewpoint. Joseph Michael Straczynski did that very will in several episodes of Babylon 5.
Errinwright had mentioned Mao's second daughter twice, once by name. He called her Mao's "...second daughter he adores."
Interesting that the Protomolecule builders didn't make _everything_ automatic, but left at least this one thing needing a material being to operate.
Yes, that last energy bolt destroyed our Solar System. If you freeze the action sequentially (I'm that much a nerd), you can see the beam speed past Saturn, Jupiter, and the four inner planets to strike and destroy Sol. But was that a revelation of what the Sphere _intends_ to do, or a warning of what it's capable of doing?

The only weak part in the whole adaptation is the vision that Holden experiences. In the books is one of the best Lovecraftian things ever written, it’s so visceral, mysterious and at the same time perfectly communicates just how godlike was the power of the civilization that inhabited the ring space.

    • @MattNolanCustom
      @MattNolanCustom 20 дней назад

I think that is just the inherent problem with where you can go inside your head with text (Holden's internal monologue) and where you can go on screen. While what they did doesn't measure up to what is conveyed in the books, I think the production did an excellent visual story which retained mystery and awe, and provided a cliffhanger, and will be fleshed out in a couple of pieces of dialogue over the next couple of episodes. The TV show has much more mystery, tension, drama and conflict than the books whereas the books have much more detail and overall material. I like that they are their own parallel universe of each other.

There wasn't a great way to explain _why_ the speed limit changed in the show. The station knew that fast moving things could be dangerous which was why things were slow, it never realised that slow moving things could also be dangerous until the grenade went off and damaged it. The protomolecule technology in its default state is _extremely_ reactionary. Bad thing happens, stop anything remotely related to bad thing from happening again.

I think the show put that across pretty clearly with the way the shots cut

It's rare that I have any complaints about your reactions, but I thought I should state my opinion anyway, I apoligize if I'm being annoying. I wish that your thought process hadn't been so influenced by the comments. I feel like it distracted you from the actual story taking place. You praised the acting of the side character so much, but didn't even discuss that storyline besides mentioning religion in general.

First off I never find thoughtful comments annoying, my friend, and I truly appreciate hearing what everyone is thinking. The only reason I didn't touch on that storyline is because it's difficult for me to talk about suicide. Normally I use humor as a defense mechanism but that doesn't come off real well with that particular subject.
      I hope that makes sense.
Thank you for both your opinion and for watching, my friend!

      @@WarpReactor That's totally fair.
