At 6:27. He said he is not as attached to the people and friends he knew in North Korea....he is totally in denial of how he really feels. He really wants to meet his family and he is denying that he misses them as much because he knows that the reality is that he may not ever see them again and that's the only way forward. It is extremely distressing.
I feel like North Korea should be part of South Korea....korean youth don't want this because they are selfish and they don't realize that on the other side is literally a third world country that doesn't even have food to eat. I hope south koreans stop acting high and mighty, put aside their differences and consider the possibility of it. An increase in population and natural resources from north korea can even generate jobs. North Koreans are already exposed to South Korean media and many of them are happy with this decision, its only the south who has a problem.
Some South Koreans don't realize they could have been north koreans living that life, simply if their great-great grandparents were from the north part of the Korean peninsula, they should stop acting like they are better and superior than these north Koreans. The two sides still share hundreds of years of tradition, in fact I think it's a shame on South Korea that they are being so influenced by the west that they aren't as connected to their Korean traditions as much as North Koreans are. Sorry if this was offensive but I think it's unfair how North Koreans are looked down upon by some south Koreans simply for being born on the other side of Korea.

I'd like to say that, for the young boys it isn't much different in that they would often have to pay with their bodies. And if you are an older teenage boy the likelihood that you'll be able to escape using this method is way less likely.
You could also look to it when the narrator mentions mostly female defectors, that probably means that many boys were sent back to North Korea before reaching refugee status and placed in prison, labor camps, or killed.
This shouldn't be categorized as a gender issue but as a human issue for what it really is.
Horrible people are horrible regardless of gender and both North Korean boys and girls suffer terrible consequences for wanting freedom.

Maybe, but you are probably still able to visit them, or even write to/call/facetime/etc. These kids aren't able to contact their friends and family in NK at all or their family could be severely punished or killed. Some are even punished for defectors in their family already. There is no way for these kids to know what's happening to their families and friends in NK, they could be dead or starving. There is no south korean not crying with their heart when having a chance to meet north koreans and hear their heartbreaking stories. The reality is that we still dont have many chance to meet them personally, north koreans dont necessarily speak out of their identity and they are worried about possible discrimination with no actual experience of it.
Over 20 years of having north korean defectors, we still need more chances to mingle with one another, which is extremely limited cases in the south and that way , both sides will understand and live together better.

They immediately get citizenship and legal protections as long as their feet are on South Korean soil. It’s almost impossible to make it straight over the Korean border, though so that’s where the main danger is-going into China and then entering Korea is the easiest way, and because of that, people are watching for them.

You oversimplify a vastly complex situation. North and South Korea are incredibly different today than compared to Germany's situation 30 years ago. South Korea would have to burden the large debt and humanitarian issues that the North has created for decades. On the flip side, North Korea would have to change its entire ideology and depose of the Kim Regime which I can't see happening without a serious fight. To say they can just easily reunite is naive.

Well, it's all very political. It would be a different matter the US didn't intervene in the Korean war, and the South wasn't closely allied and controlled by the US. China is scared that 1. North Korea could nuke them if they opened borders or allowed refugees, each time North Korea do a nuclear test the area bordering them feels the ground shaking like an earthquake, and it's pretty scary. 2. China doesn't want a refugee crisis, it already has too many people of their own (1.4 billion is a lot), and many poor ones at that, plus it could cause NK to retaliate by nuking China and South Korea. 3. South Korea closely allied to the US, and THAAD system in the South means the US would be more likely to control China/Asia, and cause the current government to topple - which the Communist gov doesn't want. 4. North Korea is like a buffer zone for China, that's how how big nations function - and having two ideological parties - though in practice China is capitalist, but the people in power are still descendents from the Communist Party. A war may still be possible with the US and China one day. Wish history could be simple, if it didn't have governments and political parties it would be, humans vs humans could all understand each other, but parties creates fractions and different ideologies creates sides, and the media doesn't help.
