I am curious if defectors get south Korean citizenship? Like can they get South Korean passport and do the men have to serve the military as a typical South Korean men?
They immediately get citizenship and legal protections as long as their feet are on South Korean soil. It’s almost impossible to make it straight over the Korean border, though so that’s where the main danger is-going into China and then entering Korea is the easiest way, and because of that, people are watching for them.
I believe they’re exempt from compulsory military service. And yes they do get Korean citizenship, identification card/proof, passport and so on almost immediately after going through ‘hanawon’, which is a program/facility where North Korean defectors go to after they get their background check at gookjeongwon (forgot what this place does so just google it)
bless all of those amazing people who help youths and people who flee from the north, for example the man from the durihana mission. really, bless you.
@@BBarNavi While watching this I was wondering if there are any Kpop idols who were NK defectors or children/grandchildren of defectors. That would be so cool if it could one day happen. It could probably help with political relations, too!
It's so disheartening to hear about what these young men and many other defectors have gone through. I hope that many more North Koreans, one day, will learn more about the world, outside of their own. And for the ones who plan on escaping or will escape in the future, will be sucessful in doing so and live a happy life.
All this is so incredibly interesting. I am going to school right now obtaining two degrees: one in journalism, and another in psychology. My ultimate goal is to move to Seoul or Busan, I want to be a counselor over there, or at least do journalism. It is such a complex situation, I'd love to be of use. I'd even love to be a counselor for defectors.
I am proud of you for wanting to make a difference in the lives of North Korean defectors living in South Korea. As I was listening to the stories of the two young boys; I started to cry. If I had the opportunity to meet them; I would give them hugs and assure them that even though life may seem tough for them right now, they just have to remember that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. As the saying goes; "Every cloud has a silver lining."
You oversimplify a vastly complex situation. North and South Korea are incredibly different today than compared to Germany's situation 30 years ago. South Korea would have to burden the large debt and humanitarian issues that the North has created for decades. On the flip side, North Korea would have to change its entire ideology and depose of the Kim Regime which I can't see happening without a serious fight. To say they can just easily reunite is naive.
This breaks my heart… I wish our country would do more to actually help these people. They need the most love and understanding that this world doesn’t offer..
Some people don't understand that even if this people hate North Korea and lived a really difficult life there, it was still their home, it is the place they were born and grew up , the place they have family and friends. And even if their life can get way better in the south there is always that feeling of not belonging completely and missing home. And the fact that they can never return must be horrible to deal with. I'm really praying for all of them and that one day they have a change to reunite with those they miss but in a good way
These kids have been traumatized by the north korean government, i do hope and pray that more defectors will be rescued by these kind hearted people so they will live their lives freely. Hope that someday change will come to north korea.
Looking Korean, speaking Korean, definitely Korean. I feel sad for every time one from the south is mocking then or say to them to back. They are not even brothers they are ONE!
Well, it's all very political. It would be a different matter the US didn't intervene in the Korean war, and the South wasn't closely allied and controlled by the US. China is scared that 1. North Korea could nuke them if they opened borders or allowed refugees, each time North Korea do a nuclear test the area bordering them feels the ground shaking like an earthquake, and it's pretty scary. 2. China doesn't want a refugee crisis, it already has too many people of their own (1.4 billion is a lot), and many poor ones at that, plus it could cause NK to retaliate by nuking China and South Korea. 3. South Korea closely allied to the US, and THAAD system in the South means the US would be more likely to control China/Asia, and cause the current government to topple - which the Communist gov doesn't want. 4. North Korea is like a buffer zone for China, that's how how big nations function - and having two ideological parties - though in practice China is capitalist, but the people in power are still descendents from the Communist Party. A war may still be possible with the US and China one day. Wish history could be simple, if it didn't have governments and political parties it would be, humans vs humans could all understand each other, but parties creates fractions and different ideologies creates sides, and the media doesn't help.

It’s almost impossible to make it straight over the Korean border, though so that’s where the main danger is-going into China and then entering Korea is the easiest way, and because of that, people are watching for them.
I believe they’re exempt from compulsory military service. And yes they do get Korean citizenship, identification card/proof, passport and so on almost immediately after going through ‘hanawon’, which is a program/facility where North Korean defectors go to after they get their background check at gookjeongwon (forgot what this place does so just google it)
@@welcometojohnnysfashioneva8221 Gookjeongwon is basically the South Korean version of CIA.
@@welcometojohnnysfashioneva8221 love your name....Johnny's fashion rules. 😊
South Korean law states that North Korean people are of the same country. So yeah, the refugees are automatically considered South Korean.
bless all of those amazing people who help youths and people who flee from the north, for example the man from the durihana mission. really, bless you.
He's playing League of Legends
probably is
Think about it. A new generation of progamers and Kpop stars arising from the generation of young refugees.
@@BBarNavi While watching this I was wondering if there are any Kpop idols who were NK defectors or children/grandchildren of defectors. That would be so cool if it could one day happen. It could probably help with political relations, too!
U sure? Or not just a similar game?

This man is doing such a noble work, I would love to join this organisation.

I’ve noticed that the defectors change their speech to Seoul dialect.
Yup.. too bad I kinda like north korea dialect
Its fake and scripted

It's so disheartening to hear about what these young men and many other defectors have gone through. I hope that many more North Koreans, one day, will learn more about the world, outside of their own. And for the ones who plan on escaping or will escape in the future, will be sucessful in doing so and live a happy life.

Thank you for making this video and bringing awareness to the people of North Korea, who are innocent and know no other way then Kim Jung Un's.
This breaks my heart. Praying for those healing 🙏🏼.
Thank you South Korea for helping them and saving them
Humans should work together to end demonizations.
Feeling sad for every north korean citizen. and thanking god everyday to be born in a democracy like india ❤
I’m so happy that these kids finally got to experience somewhat of a normal childhood
I really feel sad for them, but when I saw him playing League I was like "He's one of us from now on, not them"
When you see this you start appreciating your country more than ever.
Thats amazing!! Wishing you good luck 💜
Chapeau!! Good luck
Did you go?
Those poor babies. I hope they live a good life!
these kids deserve more attention
bless these souls
I am 100% sure that North Korea and South Korea will reunite in my lifetime under a South Korean Government. Germany did it too 30 years ago!
That's different.
They might reunite under Chinese rule! Just predict! Don't attack me! China rule over Korea so many times before!
@@lrose1310 I did not oversimplify anything nor did I assume this to be an easy task. I just stated that it will happen in the future.
You know. China don't want an US allies beside. So they will help NK reunite SK.
This breaks my heart… I wish our country would do more to actually help these people. They need the most love and understanding that this world doesn’t offer..
the fact that most of us complain about the things we have and we are lucky compared to them
Respect to those who managed to flee. But who knows what happened to their relatives...
This truly breaks my heart!😢
The pastor has a golden heart 😭
I want to give them both a hug. :((
It's sad to think that there is still a place where no one is free
Looking Korean, speaking Korean, definitely Korean. I feel sad for every time one from the south is mocking then or say to them to back. They are not even brothers they are ONE!
I'M JUST SO HAPPY FOR THEM.
You can see the pain and suffering they have dealt with in thier eyes
so much sadness I felt watching this video. I hope and I prayed that someday everything will be okay

Though a fresh new start for the north korean kids, must have been tough leaving their friends / family who are suffering under the regime behind. :(
Yeah it reminds me of a story that’s based on real life for many: A Korean man escaped so he could have a better life for his future family knowing he’d never see his own again. And his daughter and her husband immigrating to the states to give their kids the lives they never had.

He better go back to NK!
Its painful and hard to forget their familymembers and friends who are suffering in NK, but they have to somehow leave past behind and atleast keep thier next generation safe.
I truly hope both Koreas can reunite. No idea how it will ever happen. At this point, the cultural and linguistic differences are wide enough it would take a lot of work for reunification to be truly successful... I keep thinking of the Berlin Wall, but reunification there happened after only 30 years and it was hard. This has been another 30 on top of that.
When you're having a bad day just think of people living in NK. Don't waste your life, don't take freedom for granted.
Thank you, Pastor. Long live.
I hope these children will turn their traumatic experience into something that inspires them and inspire others.
Its incredibly sad for both sides for defectors and their families.

The boys are brave. I wish you all the best in your new journey.
