If anyone thinks they're buying an official legal title from some established entity, then they will be disappointed.
Just like those companies that say you can pay to 'name a star.' they aren't connected to any kind of regulatory system, so you're just paying them to pretend that you've named a star.

  • @balamb25

I think the best life lesson that I've learned from this channel is when Julian talks about how damage they cause to the painting in removing the nails is not their fault. The fault lies with whoever decided to nail it in the first place. I remember the first time he said it (the dreaded scraping episode...which happens to be one of my all time favorites :) ) But I feel like that lesson has so many applications in real life. I've felt guilt so many times because a disaster landed in my lap that I couldn't fix. But the truth was, I didn't cause it, I'm just the last one in the chain of events that created it. This is such a good lesson about not feeling guilt when you are just doing your best in a bad situation.

Julian. One of the things you might take to conservation from the watchmaker is the way watchmakers remove the hands of a watch. In order to keep the tools used to remove the hands from damaging the face of the watch they either use a polyethylene bag or there is a paper card with a small slot cut out of the middle that goes over the dial and lets the stem protrude through it. Then they either use 2 "hand levers" or a special tool called a presto tool to remove the hands. Just a thought. That way the painting would be a bit more protected than just a blotter paper alone.

Those nails thru the front suggest to me that it, sort of hiding as a pauper rather than a prince, enriched and brought pleasure to a humble abode at some point in its long life. It makes me smile to imagine that. It being anonymously discovered and admired. Someone saying "no, don't break it down for firewood" or "don't turn it that way, put the pretty side facing into the room" or "well, look at this! I am disappointed with the comments section.
Firstly, I do not understand the criticism of Kit. She is Julian's apprentice, and is there to learn. Does that mean we do not get to see fascinating work, because he is teaching her? Perhaps some people want him to skimp on her training so we get to see the interesting stuff. I suggest that anyone who struggles with videos like this goes elsewhere where they will be less offended. I do not understand the criticism especially because Kit seems to be a very nice person, someone with talent for her chosen career, and also someone who recognises and respects Julian's immense knowledge and expertise.
My second disappointment is the number of "experts" who are telling Julian how to do his job. What annoys me the most is that often they appear to have not listened to a word he has said. Indeed, some have complained that there was too much talking, yet for many of us that is exactly what we want, in order that we understand what decisions have to be made, and how different choices can affect the final outcome. I'm certain many of us are here not to just go "ooh" and "aah" as the painting is cleaned, or missing paint replaced.
Keep up the good work Julian, firstly of teaching me about your fascinating work, and secondly of passing your knowledge to the next generation of restorers. You are an excellent, and a natural teacher; I know, having trained many teachers over the years, how good you are at instructing us in the various aspects of your work.

less than 3 minutes in and I am enraptured with Julien's teaching method here. It is the perfect example of ask a quetion and just wait while the student talks their way through it. The prompt for additional information 'why would you do it in that order?' confirms he is not just interested in the how but the why, whoch is often far more important. he nods to encourage her, doesnt interrupt or take over. he just listens and waits and gi es the student the respect she deserves. Thank you Julian.

It's the same in archaeology. If we find something in the field that could be amazing, but we know we don't have the resources, technology or time to extract the most data we can, we have to make the hard but most ethical decision: register it and leave it be until the right time comes, even if it might not be ours.

Thanks

I love to watch Julian work his craft. It never ceases to amaze me at the vast amounts of knowledge he has amassed in not only art but woodworking, carpentry and the many other skills he brings to bear on these jobs. It also is daunting to see how little decisions by someone else sometimes hundreds of years earlier make his work all the harder and yet amazingly how with a proper plan, lots of skill and enough time and money all can be set to right. Bravo to you sir and your new apprentice.
