When chosing a pasword I use multiple phone numbers and string them all together. This makes for a very long secure passowrd, and it's also much easier to remember 😊

I'll add a warning here. I used Veracrypt on a Linux system. I encrypted a small hard drive which was used externally for storing data. Unfortunately and unbeknown to me, the drive could only be decrypted using the same computer operating system it was encrypted on. I was running Linux Mint, but I had to do a fresh install because the earlier Linux Mint, couldn't update to the latest version, so I had to format the drive and start again, but then, I couldn't decrypt my external drive.

Are you sure about that? There were some changes between 1.25.9 and 1.26.7 that caused certain encrypted volumes created with 1.25.9 to not be decryptable with 1.26.7. The solution being to simply use the old version to decrypt and create a new one with the new version, or with settings that are compatible with the new version. Here's the relevant text from the change log: "Complete removal of RIPEMD160 and GOST89 algorithms. Legacy volumes using any of them cannot be mounted by VeraCrypt anymore."

@@transitionalspecies4365 I'm 100% sure. As someone else has pointed out, encrypting hard drives is a pain in the arse. It's better to use encrypted containers.

You don’t need to create an EFI folder. As it says, you extract the contents of the zip file to the root directory and in doing so, will create a folder in the usb called EFI

The most secure way in my opinion is using an external (portable) hard drive to encrypt your data. This way will keep your OS safe to use, because if you mess up when encrypting all your OS or fail to decrypt your C:drive this will brick the system, and you will lose everything.

Wanted to mention that you must decrypt a hard drive if it is your system drive if you update your BIOS this is a warning I have each time I have ever updated my BIOS and if you fail to decrypt it may end up with a computer that will no longer boot or potentially brick the system entire. If your BIOS warns you about this heed the warning and decrypt your drive before you update it. don't do anything otherwise.

      Yes.
Just like on Windows Professional when BitLocker is enabled, we always have to suspend BitLocker before doing a BIOS update. Then BitLocker resumes after the update.

I prefer to just encrypt files with Veracrypt to mount and use as added drives. I usually use a file extension of large files such as video files. I can also easily copy those files over to backup drives. Best not to associate Veracrypt with files of that extension, otherwise even a normal file will flag up there's an actual Veracrypt file with that extension on the main drive.

Ok Brian this is quite a good thing to do but knowing my luck I would mess it up if I did this and I just cannot take the chance of installing this software in case I lose all of my drive. Plus I did notice from another reply that there is a way to recover the drive using a software you referred to as Recovery Drive which seems to me to make a bit of a nonsense to encrypt the drive in the first place - or have I misunderstood what you said about that software and the encryption process.
