    Jock and Trusty were actually being really sweet in that scene where she came home from the pound. In those days if a woman had had those sorts of experiences she would have been seen as 'damaged goods' especially if she was pregnant. They are offering a platonic marriage type arrangement in order to provide for her and protect her reputation.

    • @alyssabullock6421

      @@Danisachan Actually, a lot of people believe she was pregnant. That's a reason they offered to marry her, so she wouldn't have to be a single mother. Tramp got her pregnant on the night they shared spaghetti.
      Edit: This is further supported by the fact she has pups at the end, but Trusty is still healing his hurt leg. Her litter came shortly after they saved Tramp, indicating she got pregnant very recently and not far into the future.

    • @Danisachan
      @Danisachan Год назад +6

      @@alyssabullock6421 That could actually be true. But the puppies also just got have happened really fast. The thing is, I don't think that Lady OR Trump were the sort to have an 'affair' or smth at at time. I still believe it has more to do with this old-fashioned notion of being 'tainted' if you experienced what Lady experienced, in that part of town. (And the baby is awfully grown-up at the end of the movie too)

      Aunt Sarah isn't really a villain, just antagonistic. She's just a cat person who is a bit strict and believes that a dog shouldn't mix with a baby. Also she wrongly believed that her cats Si and Am got hurt by Lady so that was the reason for muzzle her.
      Also, she redeemed herself by sending a box of doggie treats as an apology for treating the dogs wrong.

    Yes, Jock and Trusty were offering to marry Lady. As this is a family movie, they do not make it obvious, but Tramp got her in trouble in more ways than just getting temporarily caught by the pound, during their night out. Hence her friends' proposals; and hence the litter of puppies at the end of the movie.
    --Also, I think the original intention was for Trusty to die, but in the end they decided not to.

    This was basically the dog equivalent of a teen girl falling for a 'bad boy' and then he knocks her up and gets her arrested. Especially back in the time this film was made, that would be a huge shame on the poor girl. As others have commented, the two friend dogs have offered a platonic marriage to her to essentially save her honor and give her and the future pups a guaranteed home.

    Peggy Lee, who played Darling in this, was a big time singer at the time. It's considered the first time an animated movie used a superstar voice. That dog Peg in the pound is somewhat of a parody of her. She later sued Disney (and won) for a cut of the profits from the video sales of this movie.

    This was the last of the 100% truly classically hand drawn Disney animated movies. They started experimenting with xerography in their next movie, Sleeping Beauty, and switched to that entirely starting with 101 Dalmatians.

    The story is set in 1909 -- a time when horse-drawn vehicles are gradually on the way out, streets are paved with cobblestones, gaslight is still common, and telephones are brand new.
    Your comparison with 101 Dalmatians is interesting. That movie represented a radically new style of animation at the time, different from anything Disney had done before -- and not everybody was on board with it right away, it was so unlike the traditional style that people (even animators) were used to. Lady and the Tramp is of course a perfect example of that old-school animation at its prettiest. Sleeping Beauty, if you react to it, is a bit different from both: the painter who was its visual supervisor enforced an angular squared-off medieval style that I like very much -- it doesn't look like any other Disney film.

It also provides the message that a relationship requires to watch your closed partner no matter what and don’t get her into trouble or else you will get rejected.

    If you watch one of the behind the scenes videos, it shows the actors voicing the characters. The scene when the dogs are howling their ad song in the pound, the men who were providing the voices started cracking up when they were done. They knew it was supposed to be a very sad, somber scene, but they just could not help themselves. Just these 3 or 4 guys, using different baritones, doing this sad pitiful howl song.🤣🤣

    • @oliverbrownlow5615
      @oliverbrownlow5615 Год назад

      The song the dogs are howling, for those who don't recognize it, is a very popular song called "Home, Sweet Home" by Henry Bishop and John Howard Payne, derived from the 1923 opera, *Clari, or the Maid of Milan.* Its opening lyrics are these:
      "Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam,
      Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home."
      It's referenced in *The Wizard of Oz* (1939) and in Rodgers & Hammerstein's *The King and I* (1956), and I think it would have been recognized by most people at the time *Lady and the Tramp* was made.

    The movie is set in 1909, so it's during the transition time before and after new technologies were introduced like cars and electricity. Rats back in those days were considered disease carriers, not to mention the physical threat of the rat to the baby. I get that Aunt Sarah wasn't a dog person, but people who own cats are not usually that blind to how much trouble a cat can get into. Especially with curtains shredded from some high up and some of the other damage they did. A dog literally wouldn't be physically capable of such things. Not to mention, most cats would have been more of a deterrent to the rat than a dog would be. There are a number of flaws in the movie when it comes to the animals, but it's still a classic movie with a lot to offer.

    Widescreen cinemascope was just coming out and this was the first animated film that would be in that format, except not enough venues were equipped for it so Walt had them do it in both formats, and the regular Academy ratio format involved the layout artists restructuring key scenes when characters were on the edges of the screen. Cinemascope presented additional problems for the animators: the expansion of space created more realism but gave fewer closeups. Longer takes become necessary since constant jump-cutting would seem too busy or annoying. Animators had to remember that they had to move their characters across a background instead of the background passing behind them. Yet the animators overcame these obstacles during the action scenes, such as Tramp killing the rat.

    The whole thing with the baby is interesting, since people do tend to make the choice of getting rid of their dog once a baby comes into play.
    Dogs are social creatures, like wolfs, and are very focused on the role of each individual in a group. A new member in said group means a 'shift' in the ranking order so to speak. This can be problematic and even dangerous. Dogs practically see babies as competition and if not supervised properly this can lead to disasterous outcomes, where all parties lose.
    This is spoken very generally of course and in most cases it goes just fine. But it does explain the stories where dogs who are normally so kind and loving, suddenly attack a baby/toddler when not watched.
    (plus the gigantic language barrier between dogs and babies. Dogs never attack out of the blue and have given several hints and warning signs beforehand. If you don't pick these up in time the dog snaps and the result is a nightmare)
    I can't stress it enough: never éver let your dog with your child unsupervised.
    It only has to go wrong 1 time.

    Very nuanced and clever movie. I feel it often doesn't get the recognition it deserves. I've watched all the Disney movies from Steamboat Willie to the mess of today and Lady and the Tramp has to be my all time favorite.

    Yeah, but sometimes it’s so cute that it makes you say aw like those funny videos that you see on RUclips or AFV sometimes it’s so cute that they win the cute award that then people say they should win the awesome cute award or like it’s so cute that it always makes you say aw plus Mya Aunt Megan had Logan and Susie like as soon as Logan was out of the hospital, it was always so cute. Susie was so curious. Plus. That’s what makes them so cute together that it always makes you say. aw and that’s why dogs and babies are really good together well most of the time

      @@alicedelgado955 she's grumpy at the kitten, but nimsy gives her space, and kittums even when she does lash out, only smacks the ground or bed, and claws stay in. Her displeasure is known, but growls are respected. They have slept next to eachother in the past few days. Not touching, but only a few inches appart, and when nimsy is asleep, kittums has come to sniff her, and checks any distress noises (claw clipping required purrito). So I think there's hope. I just have to earn back kittums love

    Stereotypical Asian cats and Stereotypical Italian people. I can see why some people get offended but it's a product of its time. Back then people in America had trouble trusting immigrants.

      Unless one is of Asian or Italian decent, people really need to be quiet when crying out racism regarding this movie. Let them decide if it's offensive or not since it's stereotypes regarding their respective cultures and races.

      +Evan Credeur The elongated buck teeth and squinty slant eyes were a MAJOR recurring stereotype in old cartoons, particularly from Disney's anti-Japanese propaganda films. Those cats had 'em both.

    As a European I must say, Americans have started to take any stereotype, be it gender, race or country related to such an extreme level of offence that most jokes or references suddenly are being put in a negative light. I live about a 30 minute drive away from the Italian border... I feel like I see men like these cooks around every corner haha. Stereotypes are okay, we are intelligent adults who know that while stereotypes exist for a reason, they are also superficial generalisations. I'm stunned to hear Americans complain about the offensiveness of such simple jokes in an old film... Makes me wonder if they ever saw a proper malicious offence.

    • @TimberlakeTigerGirl
      @TimberlakeTigerGirl Год назад

      Unless you are Asian, you really have no right to speak on behalf of Asians if they find the Siamese cat twins offensive. That goes for all the liberals who point at things screaming 'racism' without even asking how said POC feel about it.
