The puppy was stillborn (died before it got out of its mother, something that can happen, even to human babies) and Roger was massaging it to restart the heart. In fact, this was based on a real life event, Dodie Smith's (the author of One Hundred and One Dalmatians book) dog gave born to a litter of puppies and one of them was stillborn and her husband managed to revive it by massaging its heart.

this movie is groundbreaking in so many ways. it was the first disney movie that used this type of animation, which was a lot cheaper than the old, romantic way and walt disney HATED it. it was also one of if not the first disney movie to take place in contemporary times - most disney movies up until that point had been fairytales, but 101 dalmatians takes place in the "modern day" 50's/60's, has a jazzier score rather than a classical one, barely counts as a musical and roger and anita are VERY affectionate for the time, which probably raised some eyebrows at the time. the ultimate comfort movie for me, thank you for reminding me to give it a rewatch!

    • @jamesa.romano8500

I feel like it had to stick in Walt Disney's craw that 101 Dalmatians was such a huge hit coming directly after the box office bomb that was Sleeping Beauty (probably Walt's most ambitious and expensive project after Fantasia). While I don't think that he was all that involved with either film at that point - being more invested in television, theme parks, and live action film - I think its clear he thought that Sleeping Beauty was going to be the next Snow White only for Dalmatians to become the highest grossing animated Disney film since Cinderella. While I do love SB, Dalmatians would have been seen as something much more new, fresh, and modern at the time of its release and it really had something for everyone in the family, whereas SB had humor but it was more highbrow and would have gone over the heads of some kids ("This is the 14th Century!"). I think its unsurprising after that one-two-punch he started becoming even more detached from the animation department and started just delegating it to Bill Peet instead.

What's My Crime was a parody of the popular show What's My Line, which usually consisted of a guest with an unusual occupation that the three celebrity panelists had to guess and then in the latter half had the panelists blindfolded to guess a mystery celebrity who usually threw his/her voice as they asked questions to figure out who they were. I feel like this was one of the first such Disney movies to do contemporary satire like that. Thunderbolt is also very clearly an amalgam homage to the shows Rin Tin Tin and Lassie which would have aired on or around the time that this was released.

adding another comment for this, but there's a really interesting documentary on youtube called "the making of 101 dalmatians" which details how the movie was made and i've always found it fascinating that this cheaper way of doing animation allowed us to see more of the animators' personal styles directly, rather than their styles interpreted by inkers, i think they were called. the scene where roger spins his pipe is one of my favourites slowed down, it flows so beautifully and is just incredibly well animated. and there's a really funny quote in the documentary from someone at another studio, saying that only disney could make a movie like this because all other studios had issues animating one spot, while this movie contains thousands of spots that have to stay on the same place on the dogs while they're moving, truly insane to think about how much work went into it

In the original 101 dalmatians novel by Dottie Smith, Pongo is married to his mate Missus. Perdita gets taken in when they need another Dalmatian to help feed the puppies. Pongo and Missus goes to look for the puppies while Perdita stays behind keep the humans company. They along with their own puppies and the other Dalmatian puppies locate another Dalmatian named Prince who happens to be Perdita long lost mate Therefore, the total of 101 Dalmatians equals this:
    4 Adult Dalmatians
    15 Owned Dalmatians puppies
    82 Other Dalmatians puppies

I once played this while pet sitting for some neighbors (I just like having dog movies on for them at night) and one of the dogs and a cat were watching it with interest. 😂 Also disney animator Milt Kahl designed Madame Medusa from The Rescuers with the idea she would be just as terrifying and iconic as Marc Davis' Cruella. So they are similar but one clearly won audiences.

SO the movie is based on a book by Dodie Smith, and they wrote a sequel where all the humans fall asleep, so the dogs begin to fly and form their own government, and a spaceship lands in the middle of London with an alien dog that asks all the world's pets to return to the alien's planet because the humans were gonna blow up everything in a nuclear armageddon, and the dogs said "nah we're good" so the alien dog left and all the pets returned home where the humans woke up like nothing happened.

The reason Madame Medusa in The Rescuers and Cruella De Vil have similiar traits like both being reckless drivers are because Milt Kahl (one of Disney's Nine Old Men, the best and directing animators) had a rivaliary with Marc Davis (who animated Cruella De Vil in this film, also did Tinkerbell in Peter Pan, Cinderlla herself, Maeficent amongst other, after Dalmatians he jumped over to WED Interprises to work on the rides for Disneyland such as The Jungle Cruise, The Enchanted Tiki Room, It's a Small World, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Haunted Mansion, The Country Bear Jamboree, America Sings among others) and Milt Kahl wanted to make his own version of Cruella De Vil, hence how Madame Medusa is similiar to her.

101 Dalmatians is the first movie to fully use the Xerox technology,. It worked like this: they took the drawings that animators drew and put through the Xerox, which is similiar to copy machines of today (except they were so huge that it filled a whole room, even the one in the 90's before they were combined with printers and scanners, were ess bulky in comparison), which copied the drawings over to cells. This was made as a money and time saver as it was a time consuming process of trace the drawings on cells by hand. As Sleeping Beauty financially flopped in theatres in 1959 due to it's huge budget, they had to come up with something that would cut the costs and the Xerox was the solution, though it the style a bit more sketcier than before and could only use black outlines for the characters. It wasn't until The Rescuers were they could have other outline colors other than black.
The Xerox technology was expermented with on the battle between Philip and Malificent.
The movie was also the first time Legendary Disney Animator and one of Disney's Nine Old Men, Wolfgang Reitherman directed a movie (the next film The Sword in The Stone was the first as a solo director) and would direct Disney movies up until 1979's The Fox and The Hound, afterwards he retired.

I remember being 4 years old watching this and being invested in it, though mostly for the puppies. I also thought Cruella was beautiful and wanted her red devil rotary phone. XD

personally, I don't know what to think about this movie because I suffered from dog phobia as a child and even as an adult. I've been asked many times if this movie increased or was the cause of my phobia and I can't say anything about it

Say, this was the very first Disney movie that showed two human characters flirting. A lot of animal couples did so in the previous ones, but this was the next step, so to say

20:32 you know JV, I’m glad you actually liked the Twilight Bark scene for a fact a fellow Canadian reactor named Rukiya who also watched the movie that awkwardly didn’t like the Twilight Bark for the barking moments and having ptsd flashbacks while watching the Aristocats for Napoleon and Lafayette barking.

Oh I love this movie, not sure if you’ve seen Lady and the Tramp but one of the characters appear in this film. Pongo shows up in the Oliver and Company movie.
You should add the live action 101 & the 102 Dalmatians movie Glenn Close truly brings Cruella to life. Emma Stone did okay in the Cruella movie but she just doesn’t have that insane give you the creeps vibe like Glenn does. Especially 102 when the clock chimes and she begins to laugh.

Fun fact : in France, Pongo was voiced by the same guy than Jock the dog, Joe the cook in " The Lady and the Tramp " and others Disney characters. The difference is he used his real voice for Pongo
