    I wonder if James Hong at the SAG awards saying EEAAO needs to be watched a second or third time has allowed some (older and confused voters) to reassess the film and appreciate not every movie needs to be perfectly digested on first viewing. EEAAO is the definition of a movie with layers that need to be examined and explored with repeat viewings. It will be a highly deserving Best Picture winner should it win.

As for top 4 Oscar-winning original screenplays, "Citizen Kane," "All About Eve," "The Apartment" and "Network" all spring to mind.. Overdue actor: Derek Jacobi, Mary Kay Place, Rita Wilson. ?? Questions to Joyce and Christopher: 1. Doesn’t losing SAG upset Austin’s momentum since all the Oscar voting came after that? 2. If the biopic narrative always gets it, why not Anna de Armas for Blonde or Taren Egerton for Rocket Man? I’m sincerely curious.

    • @chrisjrosen
      @chrisjrosen Год назад +11

      Good question. I guess I would say with regard to Ana, that she even got nominated is a testament to the strength of biopic narratives -- that movie was widely disliked by critics, viewers, and presumably members of the industry. Taron could've gotten in that year but again, the movie wasn't particularly strong. For Butler, Elvis is very strong as a nominee and seven of the last 10 Best Actor winners are biopic roles -- plus, an actor hasn't won in this category without a Best Picture nomination in the last 13 years. So then you're left with Butler vs. Farrell, and Butler has the edge to me because of the biopic factor.

I do hope that Austin wins because I feel there was so much more to the role that drew on so many levels of talent needed in comparison to the others. But I am wondering if the Brendan narrative and the extremely sensitive good guy thing he has shown in interviews and speeches will be what gets him there. His long career is certainly not relevant to me because it’s not like his previous roles were considered Oscar worthy. Austin (supporting role) as Tex Watson was fantastic and also transformative. Colin is just good at everything he does, but I think his personal bad boy stuff has inhibited him in the past with nominations… This could be a JB Crazy Heart scenario with Fraser but I hope not. God the songs are not what they used to be...................remember "What a feeling", "My Heart Will Go On", "Iris" or "Uninvited" , which both should have been nominated. Even the animated films, "Circle of Life" A Whole New World", "The Colors of the Wind" This category has taken a hit ever since they nominated that awful Counting Crows song from Shrek.

      @Christopher Rosen you can have favorites but that doesn't mean that your favorites are going to win just because you like some things about those movies. And yes, answering your question there ARE many ways, and picking your personal favs as winners isn't one.

      @Christopher Rosen I do understand that. But just as an example you're picking Top Gun in Song and Elvis in production design where those clearly aren't front runners not major upseters...
