Worzel once joined me and a few friends for a pint in Holmfirth. We had no idea who this bloke was telling us stories and presumed he was just a local eccentric. The patrons of the bar told us that many of the tales he told us were true, many of them humourous. A nice genuine funny bloke. RIP
Was that in Nook? Think saw him in there a couple of times late on a Friday, he used to turn up to the Ribble as well which was interesting!

I knew Jake very well and I used to work with him when he was the wagon driver for UBM Rycroft builders merchants ! Jake was then known as John Gray and he was always being bollocked by the " management " as he was too honest and would tell customers if there was any issue with what he delivered ! I attended Jakes first funeral many years ago when he was taken on a horse drawn cart through Lindley to his home at Peat ponds cottage ( Worzel Land ) where John Gray was laid to rest in a tomb of his own building to rise three days later as Jake Jonathon z mangleworzel - He stood as a candidate for the local council of Meltham ( Holmfirth ) under the name of Mangleworzels All Night Party and he got quite a lot of votes !! I spent many hours with Jake at various parties over the years and he was as I am sure you know very eccentric but great to talk to ! I could tell you many stories of his court appearances dressed in a nappy , a pirate , and his incarnation as Longwood Singh - A national treasure no longer here but I am sure he will never be forgotten ~!! RIP Jake the Rake

I don't know if you gentlemen will see this or even read it, I've been a long time subscriber to your channel I suffered from very bad depression and agoraphobia before the pandemic, then it hit like a ton of bricks with lockdowns etc. But your channel, with sensibilities and humour showing some incredibly wondrous places has kept me going, possibly even alive through all this. Dont think i class as agoraphobic but i get it. I will avoid going outside if/when i can. Currently my partner has been literally taking me on walks around the local park and we've found the "loophole" that actually makes me want to go outside is the prospect of potentially getting to pet a dog lmao. Its daft but it works.
I hope you find your loophole and you get your freedom back.
Look after yourself. Lockdown made things like this much harder to deal with, even now. Forcing yourself to go for a walk, even if it's at 3am so there are no people about helps me.

As soon as there is another person other than the 3 of you I really understand how careful and respectful you 3 normally are. And that is why I like to watch the exploring because it is exploring with respect.

This was bloody brilliant, I watched it when you uploaded earlier. I then watched all the videos about his life. What a legend and so sad at the same time! Mental health was so misunderstood then and even today to a degree!. Great content and handled respectfully and yet I bet he’d have loved to show you how everything worked and he’d be mortified you didn’t! Keeping memories alive and making new ones is what life’s about....deep shit ..🤫

I don’t often (if ever) say thanks for your content but on this occasion this video hit me a little different. I love the exploring side of your stuff equally as much as I enjoy your humour and banter and this was no different but there was something sad and haunting about this one. What a fascinating place and life this man had. I had never heard of him prior to this video but went and watch mr somebody straight after your video. I’ve been left with a profound sense of loss and a deep sadness. I wish I had known about him when he was alive, I would have loved to have met him and just sat and put the world to rights with him. He was troubled for sure but he seemed content with his life and that’s something to respect.
Thanks for this and for bringing Jake to our attention. That’s enough of the soppy shite though. As you were gents.

He did marry his dog then he got married at Huddersfield register office he wore the wedding dress and she wore the 3 piece suit and they got divorced the day after because they didn't consummate the marriage I can tell you a lot about him if you want to know

he lived in that caravan when his house burned down. He fell asleep with a lit cig hence his burnt home. i knew him well and my mate chris morris can give you more info as he was his friend. Hope this helps.
I'm sure a mangle wurzle is a vegetable used to feed animals, like a big turnip type thing. I remember seeing Jake in the paper when I was young about him wearing a turban so he didn't have to wear a motorbike helmet. Interesting video.
My husband and this fellow would probably have liked to brain storm together. We own a large building that my husband has toyed with the idea of making a museum of curiosities and miniatures. He hung an old 30's coupe on the ceiling. An actual frame up on the ceiling. There is a bistro set and mini garden on the ceiling as well. He made a covered bridge that you can walk through. He has so many items put into collections. There is so much stuff. He's now 77 and has decided that he won't do the museum. Our grandchildren walk in and are so surprised at all he has collected into this building.
Mr. Mangelwurzel appeared on an episode of Hoarders (I think?), not too long ago. He'd had about 2 fires in which he'd almost died, and had attracted the attention of the local council. Think his neighbours were trying to get him out - as one would expect of midldle England. Seemed like a nice guy. Big smoker.
Mental to think he's buried there but at the same time quite fitting. Class video guys.

He was buried on that property apparently in a tomb so presumably the one with the flowers on.
Property has since been demolished and his remains moved
Ohh hell .. I reckon the spirit of the Mangle Wurzel has lured Norton there to possess his body so he can come back to life again within a similar hair coloured victim .. A bit like a body snatcher or a Wurzel snatcher or summet.

Not sure if anybody else has mentioned this but he was buried at the big grave Al were reading. He was a bit of a joker so the headstone is just of some random woman. But Jakes buried there in a green coffin. He died less than a year ago.
i looked it up online,he is in fact buried at that grave marked mary ann. there are pics online showing his custom casket being put inside that very spot.

I live in Huddersfield & I knew Jake Mangle Worzel, when I was a kid he use to drive round in his car which had a toilet 🚽on it plus many many other crazy stuff 🤣 the guy was a lovely interesting man. He kept building more & more on his house. Great guy. His house did have a fire then he lived in his caravan

I think the ‘hands off the HRI’ sign could be from the protest to protect the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, they was going to close it down. Not sure if they still are going too.

My school bus went past his house whilst i was at primary school from 1970 to 77. He was a well known character around Huddersfield back then driving around in morris minor estate with a yacht on top of it. Maaaad.

The most favorite of my favorite sit-coms "Last of Summer Wine". In the 90's, whilst in London for a few days...living here in Texas...I stopped in Holmfirth, drove thru Huddersfield. Just an unbelievable gorgeous area. 🐈
