Kurt Busiek writing angry fanmail before becoming a Marvel writer is too funny. Sal dropping knowledge like that is one of the reasons why Back Issues is the best comic book related content on RUclips. It's fun and educational!
I got the first Defenders Epic Collection after seeing this and its hilarious. Hulk's stupid nicknames for everyone, the pompous angry loners all threatening to leave their adventures for reasons at the turn of a hat and the mundane B plots made these early issues hilarious 😂.

I swear comicpop is slowly tricking me into thinking the silver age is the best era of comics. This and the original avengers, FF, and early spidey eps just slay me. (Ik this one is technically bronze age shhhhhhhh)

As someone from the Fort Wayne, IN area I would like to say that a farmer wanting to shoot someone for being on their property and spooking the livestock is 100% accurate. Really distills the Hoosier mindset.
To be fair, Mantis freaked people out by attacking an old lady (Who was Strange in disguise), so that didn't make them seem like simple trespassers.
For a team with even more tenuous connections; the Champions (1970’s era) Angel, Hercules, Black Widow, Ghost Rider, Iceman, and I think Darkstar(?)
The champions, defenders, and west coast avengers all meet up monthly to cry about how lame their teams were
The real question are to what extent the parallels between Avengers/Defenders War and JLA/Avengers War are intentional vs subliminal for Busiek.
Between all the items of vishanti, agamatto, cytorrak, watoomb, etc etc etc everyone in Marvel must be trippin over all this magical junk every day. “Oh this is the crimson lamp of cytorrak, i found it in a dumpster. It really ties the room together when paired with the rug of agamatto”

Now I kind of want a Back Issues about Steve Gerber's Defenders run with that bizarre Elf with a Gun subplot.
A shame we didn't see the debut of the greatest villain ever, The Elf with a gun

As anyone that has used an umbrella knows, when you close it you're probably getting a little wet. Iron Man would probably get acid on his neck and traps trying to get the helmet off anyway. Suit is better than exposed skin lol.

The Defenders weren't a secret team. They literally had a cameraman who accidentally televised that they were looking for recruits forcing them to have an open casting call filled with all the D listers they wanted to push. Then because they were a "No team" anyone could be a Defender. So villains attacked the banks and stuff calling themselves Defenders. Later on there was a Secret Defenders, but that was a lame showcase comic series and is not really related.
Interesting! We said that in the episode because they refer to themselves as a secret team multiple times throughout the series. Also they wipe the minds of the Earth so their team can remain a secret.
What issue was that in? I've been reading the og issues and that never comes up. Is that a retcon or did the good doctor wipe my mind, too?
Classic defenders is oddly fun. A weird mishmash of characters
It was the best team book of the 70s imo. If you can deal with the writing style of 70s comics I highly recommend it. It's way ahead of it's time in many ways. It's why I'm always so pissed off at Netflix Defenders. They should be the Heroes for Hire, or the Marvel Knights. Although Luke Cage and Iron Fist have both been Defenders, but at different times. Otherwise no connections.
@@umabomber I've read a bit. The story where they teamed up with moon knight. Reading mainly modern comics made it hard to start but once I got the flow of the story it was a fun romp.

The Avengers when I was growing up were Sersi, Crystal, Black Knight, Vision, Hercules, and Black Widow. They. Sucked.
