Insurance for the house, does the insurance company require any certified documents/tests for the foundation, fire safety, or wind sturdiness?
How did you select the type of wood or is it just what was available?
Why did you choose for a metal roof rather than using roof tiles or other materials?
How did you calculate the R values of your walls, floor, roof? Did you do this beforehand?
How did you come up with the distance between your posts?
Does the municipality stipulate what materials you can use or are you free to choose any materials you like?
How did you decide the size/shape of your windows?
How did you manage to connect the cabin with water/electricity/coms?
Did you hire any additional pair of hands?
How much time did you spend on preparations before the first post went into the ground?
How are you planning to secure the cabin while you are not there?
Did you select the timber yourself at the timber yard i.e. selecting the straights and rejecting the warped pieces or did you trust the timber merchant for that?
What made you do the cabin and why by yourself.
looking back at what have you built what would you make different?
how far is the supply store?
what will you use the cabin for?
when you're done with it what's next?
did you worked with an architect/ engineer ?
did you needed permits and what kind?
what kind of inspections you had to pass soo far and what was the problematic one?
what was the hardest phase so far?
Do you feel you've saved more $ by spending your time doing the work yourself instead of subcontracting all the work and spending that time saved making $ for yourself
What was the total cost including additions?
Do you have building plans for sale?
Do you think your tongue and groove method could be used to build a larger log home (say 2,000 sq ft)
I’ve always wondered how to determine what type of foundation you will need for the cabin, especially if you are not working off of engineered stamped plans. How deep and how many footers should the cabin have? Would it be better to have a crawl space, or just sit on blocks, and what factors should you think about to determine the answer?
What about wildfire? What are you doing to reduce fire risk
Did you use a different grade/type of lumber for your rafters? they are usually longer and need to be pretty straight.
How do you deal with burnout/motivation? I am looking at starting a build in the next 5 years but I want to try to find little tips and tricks now to deal with the inevitable feeling of being overwhelmed or just burnt out.
Where did you get all the information when it comes to building codes? There are so many different little things, did you get all the information in one place? how did you digest all that information and apply it.
Would 2 x 6 rafters have been sufficient for this cabin?
What types of floor insulation options have you considered & which one will you do?
Did you have all the money up front for this project or do you buy materials as you save up for them?
My questions are mostly related to plumbing and electrical things. like how you connected plumbing drainage to main line? also how can you take electricity from main house or street? etc.
also just wanted to check what if I would like to do the same for my home. Can I do it by myself like what are the requirements like license needed or do I need to get any permits from the city?
What is the travel distance between your home where you live daily and the place where you built your cabin? If long distance, how may travel hours have you accrued in your build?
What is the process/order for building a cabin? IE, Civil planning, septic planning, plan design, permits, inspections, etc.
Where/How do you determine if what you are building is built to proper code. Obviously some research needs to be done before you build so you don't end up with a surprise. What are some resources. How/What does the process look like. What happens if an inspector doesn't like how you built something.
Where/how did you find the details for cutting/installing the vapor barrier around the windows (for water infiltration) Same with the deck plate.
Where/how did you learn about putting tape on the top of the deck joists, or retreating the cut ends of treated lumber?
What are some things that you felt were going to be easy in your head, but ended up being a total pain. Mostly everything, right lol

It is a pleasure to see somebody who understands and can apply the engineering that is required to build a strong residential structure. A good home starts with a good foundation and continues up through the roof and on until the home is finished. Keep up the good work. I have enjoyed your presentations.

My wife and I built our home here in Colorado. The only things we didn't do was pour the slab, install the tile in the shower, the kitchen and for the wood stove to sit on, and install the garage door. It isn't super difficult, you just have to pay attention to the details, mostly the the international codes and check if there are any state, county or local codes that are required on top of that.
If you think you can, or if you think you can't.....you're right.

Thank you for answering these questions!! I couldn't catch the live, but I appreciate you answering the questions I sent in. Good to know that I can order everything from Lowes. I just assumed that Lowes/Home Depot wouldn't be a good source, so that helps a lot to know!!
