  • Pakistan is in the middle of political chaos - and one man is at the center of it all. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan was ousted last year in a no-confidence vote, but polls suggest he remains the country’s most popular political leader.
Within a year of being removed from office, 70-year-old Khan has survived an assassination attempt and faces dozens of new charges ranging from corruption, terrorism to sedition. The current government has branded the popular politician known for his philanthropy and cricket career as a "militant" and attempted to arrest him using excessive force, while tear gassing, attacking and arresting his supporters. Khan believes the charges against him are political persecution tactics meant to distract him from campaigning for elections due this year.
VICE World News’ Isobel Yeung sat down with Khan at his home in Lahore on March 6, 2023.

Imran Khan while Pakistan prime minister could have remained silent on China's repression of Uyghurs (and ethnic Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Xinjiang Hui, and Utsuls) if he thinks his hands are tied politically, but instead he went out of his way to openly endorse China's oppression of Muslims in June 2021.
Then in March 2022 Imran Khan made the absurd statement that "China follows the teachings of the Prophet [Muhammad]". The CCP which is an atheist regime that has persecuted Muslims for its entire existence, and which has only gotten several times worse under Xi Jinping, is apparently following the teachings of the Prophet!

From listening to this video, Imran Khan sounds like a very pragmatic person. His answers were very concise and informative. I'm Armenian and I'm really interested in learning more about Pakistan's politics and history. Also, I hope once Pakistan's internal problems are resolved, Imran Khan can finally recognize my country and establish diplomatic relations. Our past President has also showed interest in developing diplomatic ties with Pakistan.

The piece looks good overall but a few observations:
1: Imran Khan has a huge female support and party workers but it seems quite deliberate that VICE chose to start the video as if it was some misogynist male dominated group. I couldn't see the female representation in the video and since the platform has a global reach, it does give a negative vibe.
2: The reporter insinuates that there was no *evidence* that suggests that ruling party was behind it. Clearly, VICE has not followed the developments and the cover up that took place right after the attack. Not even an FIR has been registered because there was the name of ISI's officials and the ruling party's interior minister. Also, it would've been great if the current government's attitude towards media was given a space in the video. One of the most popular investigative journalist, Arshad Sharif was butchered in Kenya as he ran away from the country after facing humiliation by the government agencies. Who was he criticising? VICE fails to mention.
3: The voiceover stretches the answers of Imran Khan by adding additional information like 'sees himself as champion of women's rights' which he clearly did not say.
While adding creative music does elevate the videos of VICE (and I love them), this piece is more like a balancing act. The voiceover has information that deviates from what is being said in the video, maybe because the pre-determined answer did not meet the expectations.

Wow, what a man, what a charisma. He is crystal clear in his mind while responding on rote issues, most western interviewers usually pose, for example, his not siding so called and selective western human rights activists and feminists who constantly question him about women's condition in Afghanistan, his Russia visit, less women in his cabinet, banning talk shows or arresting journalists etc. His responses are honest, practical and bold. So lucky to be alive in his era and see a real hero struggling for the freedom of his country❤

The problem is I don't think he can do anything without compromising a lot to world's most powerful. But he was honest, also he cannot control a lot of things about arrests etc... dealing with army is gonna be at least a decade long challenge, if he can stay in power.
