  • Public bike parks are a thing, and have been for quite some time. Today we take a look at Coler Mountain Bike Preserve in Bentonville, AR and how it benefits the community. We also discuss some reasons why your city should build a bike park, and how you might be able to convince them.
    The Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism for sponsored my trip to Bentonville last week. Learn more about planning a mountain biking trip to Northwest Arkansas and visit @arkansas on Instagram.

      Hey Seth!! I really think Asheville could be a great fit for this idea. Since our area is already a well rounded mountain bike area, I think this could be a great idea for Asheville. Also you live here and you could be the front runner to help encourage this idea, especially having amazing evidence. You are also able to go all over our country seeing the impact of the mtb community.

    Our city of 40 000 people (Vernon B.C. , Canada) just spent $70 000 on a new bike skills park right in the heart of the city. I was built on park land that was known for vagerents and drug use. It's now great to see the land being used for something good. Tot, Intermediate and advanced pump tracks were built. Also a climb trail with a flow jump line coming down. Phase 2 dirt jump plans already in the works. We are surrounded by world class mountain bike trails to ride. However some days it's just fun to grab the HT and head to the local pump track for the afternoon.

    One of your best videos yet Seth, however, you didn't address the one thing cities are concerned about after money - liability. How is Bentonville able to overcome insurance risks with a gravity park. I'm sure it's a simple answer, but it would've been great to see you cover it! Again, great video!

    • @SethsBikeHacks
      @SethsBikeHacks  6 лет назад +42

      In most cases it’s actually very hard to sue your city-much harder than a bike park. You’re right that I should have mentioned that. Even if private land is being used it’s protected by recreational use statutes here in the USA.

    • @ReZ_Trombone
      @ReZ_Trombone 6 лет назад +16

      Also a lot of trail systems usually have warning signs that say "use at own risk" which negates them from liability.

    • @jf0314

      @@SethsBikeHacks Thanks for the response. We've been fighting to keep access open to a trail here in Tucson and have done ok. Problem is, the trail is on state trust land and will eventually be auctioned off. The big fight won't be access, but why that trail should exist at all. We're a ways off from the fight, but it's coming. Videos like this, I hope, will be very helpful with trying to get us a seat at the table with developers.

    • @GetOutsideNOW
      @GetOutsideNOW 6 лет назад +4

      Assumption of risk is the answer. As long as you know where you're going, what to expect when you get there and rules, signs, etc. are clear, it's hard to sue (and win) if you broke your neck trying a backflip off a roller. I hate to label people in upper-level City positions, but they are typically older and do not share the same excitement for the sport. This video is fantastic and I am considering sending it to my local town.

    Communities that have been all but forgotten due to industry jobs being farmed out overseas can benefit from embracing mountain bike culture is a huge way. As you mentioned, mountain bikers travel, buy food, gas, lodging, etc. I've seen a few towns that within one year of building even a humble trails system have a major economic boom, leading to more trails, leading to more money for the city. It's a beautiful thing! Awesome vide Seth, you totally smeeeeshed it!

    Great video as always, Seth. The important takeaway is that even if you don't have Walton family type money, you can still build trail in your town if you're willing to put in the effort.
    Here in Kansas City where I live, volunteers have built over 230 miles of singletrack over the past 20 years in various city and county parks. We may not have the topography for gravity trails, but our volunteers have done some amazing things for a metro area of over two million. It all starts with a dedicated group of people willing to deal with local government and dig!

      Bass Breaker ... just left your awesome town and Outerbike ... the awesome trails, I was ready for. What I didn’t expect was the awesome people in NWA. The whole town considered us there guests and were glad we were there. The most awesome bike trip I’ve ever been on. The trails were unbelievable but the people made me want to stay. I catch myself staring at the wall at work.... smiling...
      Can’t wait to come back.

      Johnny Smith I’ve met people from all over since my back yard has blowing springs loop within a few yards. They just built 8 mountainbiker condos with bike wash and repair stations, huge community fire pit and frontage right to blowing springs loop. It’s amazing, I love going down to blowing springs at night a sharing a beer with visitors. We just got another 40 miles approved just in Bella vista. I grew up racing, but had to travel to ride, practice and race. Now coler is 600 yards from my parents house and I’m 100ft from 9 miles of premium single track. We have free beer at some bike shops too. I love the events we get. Met a few dudes from Austin Texas at outerbike that I wish I could’ve stayed in touch with. I was coming off a long injury with no ride time and they smoked me on the bush push! It was just so rad tho!

    Our city, Florence SC. Is nearing the end of a 3 year process to turn about 100 acres of unused city land into a run ride park. As bikers we were able to help the city with some of their goals to increase the green space in the city and promote healthy life styles. We were able to jump into some other programs aimed at reducing obesity and diabetes and helped the city write a RTP grant with the help of IMBA reps. The project is out to bid now on building the trails and hopefully we will be riding 3-5 miles of pro built trails late spring with the possibility to add more. Its not an over night process but as the project has gone on we have gained more and more support. A local brewery has a beer on tap that part of each sale is going to a fund for the park.

    Great video and I have shared it with our Judge Executive. We just volunteer-built the Hammond Creek Trail here in Eddyville, KY. County land and it hasn't cost the County more than about $1000 dollars. Everyone, especially the Judge Executive, is on board, which definitely helps. But I think your video will help our trail because we want to expand and add so much more over the coming years. Great ideas here. Thank you...

    Two quick things
    1. Thank you so much for making this video! I am currently in college studying parks and recreation management and development with a goal of making stuff like this happen wherever I end up as soon as I get out of school. I haven't looked at the resources you left in the description yet, but I'm stoked to get looking through that stuff to add to my education. Hopefully I'll get to use this info someday to help make some bitchin trails happen!
    2. Coler is the best place to learn y'all! I went from doing a 3 footer to that 13 foot drop the hammer drop in a single day. Get out there, it's worth it!

    This video got me so excited for the future! I live in a small town in the western part of Germany, and there is 1 good skate park within an hour drive, and the closest small bikepark is 1.5 hours away! If only my town had some dirt jumps, a pumptrack, or even a nice skatepark... Most of the youth I see while riding some street spots near the local school is either smoking, or drinking, but they are definitely interested in what I am doing on this weird looking bicycle. I think a little trail network, some jumps, or even a pumptrack could go a long way here!
    Thank you for this video Seth :D

We teach youth and young adults through a 12 week bike and employment skill training program. It is called the Work and Learn model and we even started a bike shop in New Orleans (YEP Bike works) using this model. I use your videos for our program and they are great.
