In this lesson, I show you some hand and finger stretching exercises that every guitar player should do prior to practicing or playing a gig. I learned the hard way many years ago when I developed a case of tendinitis (or "tendonitis", it's spelled both ways) and had to stop playing the guitar for about a month.
I have also suffered with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in years past, and could have avoided it if I had done some simple hand and finger muscle stretching exercises before I began to play.
These exercises are very easy to do, and it only take a few minutes to run through them, so I highly recommend that you do these yourself before you pick up your guitar!

Thank you so much for posting this. So much good advice. I wish I had known more about "guitar health" when I was younger (you know, when I was ten feet tall and bulletproof). These injuries can actually be developing "secretly" for years, with little to no warning signs before the pain becomes very apparent. I developed severely limiting tendon and nerve pain just after college (after having played for years), and it has taken years to find the right therapists/chiropractors with the right exercises and stretches to gradually alleviate the pain and limitation. Thank God for a few key people at key times who helped to really turn it all around and basically give me a significant part of my life back.
Besides stretching and exercises, another very, very helpful tip (I don't remember where I learned this) is to soak your arms up to above your elbows in hot tap water and Epsom salt. It helps to reduce inflammation (which can cause nerve discomfort and damage) and improve circulation and flexibility (I think the magnesium is the active ingredient). I do some massage and stretching on my hands and arms while soaking them--having them already warmed up makes this very effective. I try to make sure to soak before and after a long playing session--sometimes this results in having little to no discomfort even after playing for hours (something I really couldn't enjoy for years).

Great video. I have stubby fingers & I'm trying to get my bass chops back after a long time only to find my pinkie finger on my fret hand is as useless as a friggin' pickle. So some stretches of especially the ring and pinkie on my fret hand will be useful. I find that I don't have the dexterity I once had a million years ago as a lad. Thanks from a Chicago bass player.

Very helpful. I've done the shake-the-hands, rather violently, every day. I worked as a car mechanic for decades and started having pain in the fretting hand when I would play. Shaking the hands and stretching helps the circulation.

I got tennis elbow from landscaping... essentially bilateral epicondilitis.... both arms, and it's taken two years to fix. Two things: Check out how rock climbers stretch out; learn how to juggle clubs, or, just juggle. And thirdly, Qi Gong.
