    All this years everyone been complaining about lumix's continuous autofocus because they been sticking with their DFD tech. Now what sorcery they have done to catch up with sony in AF performance in this shot span after they adopting phase dictect. Fuji had phase dictect since a long time and they still struggle to get it done right. If lumix had done this years ago, maybe current market situation could have been too different.

      even my canon 6DmkII had a way better AF than my S5 or gh6 despite being 4-5 older. I Love my S5 and i had to rely on the AF some times because it was on gimbal, as much as I pushed the shutter button to remake focus , damn It was all about luck sometimes to get the shot net and clean. Even struggle in easy lighting situation. worst was in a concert hall for an esport event , multilple lighting sources with fire , fireworks ; Dude was bringing the trophy on stage , I had s5 on gimbal up in the air to get upon the crown. The shot was magnificent but i had like just 20% in focus , I was so mad at lumix for that ;

    The 20mm f1.7II works very well on my G9II, so it will probably works well on the GH7 too, the AF is fast in video, much better than on the GH6 or GH5. However it is noisy if you shoot with the internal mic on a silent room.
    I had some issue with my 45-175mm on my G9II though, even in AF-S with back button focus. It sometimes loses everything in focus, like the GH6 did when using most lenses below 48fps. My 45-175mm is not very sharp so maybe it is an issue with my sample, but I never had this issue with my GH6 and GH5 when using back button focus.

    I coudn’t find an About page on the channel Shane. (I googled and I read that RUclips changed it) so I checked Description, your web page and links but no joy unfortunately? BTW, I love the colours you are getting through RUclips. I see many colorists and reviewers who have great technical content but fail to render great looking videos. A lot fall apart when projected in home theatre but yours look excellent. Can I ask which lens you used for the intro and the wind up thoughts on the GH7 around 7.50 timeline? I am trying to decide between the GH7 and the S511X and lenses (while trying to keep weight under control) and your content is most helpful as it represents what goes through our minds on the endless combinations out there. But as American Humorist Mark Twain once wrote: "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco" The GH7 looks great, but... It would have looked a lot better if it had come out two-plus years ago BEFORE the FX30 came out. Looking very good for RUclips type shooting. But looking at the background, as you are walking quickly but at a constant speed towards the camera, you can see the AF pulsing in several steps. Again, useful (and a massive improvement fromDFD) but it shows where Panasonic has room to improve.

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy
      @GeekyNerdyTechy  3 месяца назад

      If you shoot 100p in the Recording Menu, you get PDAF, but loose the human detection/tracking modes. If you shoot with variable frame rate (like S&Q) It's stuck to manual focus but it slows it down in camera. The G9II keeps PDAF in S&Q which gives it the advantage.

    Have you tried Olympus and Sigma lenses with the GH7? I am a Lumix guy (G9, GH5 II, GH5s) saving up to buy the GH7. My lenses include the Olympus 8mm Fisheye, 17mm f1.8, 60mm macro, and 100-400, and the Olympus 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. One day I will get the 90 macro and the 75 1.8.
    Sigma I have the 16, 30, and 56 1.4's
    On the Lumix/Leica side I have the 7-14, 12/1.4, 12-35/2.8, 14-42 PZ, 20, 25/1.7, 30 macro, 35-100/2.8, 42.5/1.2, 45 macro, and 45-175 PZ. One day I will get the 10-25 and 25-50 zooms
    A lot of us use a mix of lens brands, especially Olympus and Lumix/Leica, and Sigma, but all the reviews are only addressing the Lumix/Leica lenses and ignoring Olympus and Sigma, which is not realistic compared to real world lens usage. If Panasonic are only permitting Lumix/Leica lenses in reviews then they are idiots, and being anti-user in that attitude. If they are not, can you please try out Olympus and Sigma lenses on the camera?

      @@GeekyNerdyTechy Do you have any Olympus lenses to try? While my basics like the 12-35 and 35-100/2.8's are Lumix or Leica, Olympus is essential for the things where Panasonic is lacking. like the 1.8 fisheye, longer focal length macros, etc. and they are an essential part of an MFT kit.
      I wish Panasonic would get back to developing new MFT lenses. We need a 105mm macro, 17mm f1.7, 12mm f1.7, and a 6mm f2 or 2.8 for a start.

      Lidar works to detect what's closest to the camera so if you hold your hand up, it may move to that instead. I haven't used a Lidar system, it may have moved forward since I looked into it a year or two ago. PDAF is better generally due to the tracking modes, but both will no doubt do a good job. Focus isn't smooth at this point; it is stepping through. The positive thing is that it sticks, but it still needs improvement when following. I still think they could have done a better job with the pulsing on the GH6, as all it needs to do is hold focus and not hunt.

    • @castielvargastv7931

      @@castielvargastv7931 I understand that, but if the subject isn’t moving, why does it still need to hunt? It should be able to lock focus and stay there unless there's a significant change, like placing your hand in front of your face or making a dramatic movement. With the machine learning capabilities, this shouldn’t be too difficult, right?

    • @overnightdelivery
      @overnightdelivery 3 месяца назад

      @@pragmaticfilmmakingI don't think that works with Contrast Detect since it's never entirely sure where it should focus. If for example CD thought it was in focus, it would remain out-of-focus the whole time if the scene didn't change. PDAF doesn't need to search, as it is more of a yes/no instead of a maybe.

    • @pragmaticfilmmaking
      @pragmaticfilmmaking 3 месяца назад

      @@overnightdelivery The machine learning system can distinguish different body parts and tell the difference between humans and animals. In my studio, even when there's only one well-lit person, the system keeps readjusting its focus, which creates the pulsing effect. I discovered that the pulsing stops by reducing the AF sensitivity to -3. There's room for improvement in this aspect. Additionally, if the pulsing frequency is over 60fps, the human eye shouldn't be able to detect it, so that might be another area Lumix could look into. Panasonic just seems uninterested, and the even BGH1 could be vastly improved with just a few simple firmware updates.

    I dont know what you do with your lumix 42mm 1.7. it was unusuable with my gh5 and it still is with my gh7 the lense refuses to focus at all if i am lets say on the far left side of the frame. It only works with very simple tasks and overal its very unrelieable if it comes to autofocus. I paid over 400 euros for this lense and its autofocus was too bad always even for fotos when i tried to use it with my gh5. For fotos it focuses slow and hesitant if i push the shutter button and in video its too unreliebale. I just keep it because no one wants to pay for this piece of garbage. I own lumix 1.7 25mm as well and its not sharp at 1.7. i have to stop down to at least 2.8 to make it acceptable sharp. Even the super cheap 12-35 3.5-56 is much much sharper wide open and the autofovcus is better as well. All those old lumix lenses need an update as the really are not good in 2024. . 12-60, 14-140 and leica 15mm 1.7 are good in my book but usually i just use the olympus pro 12-40 2.8. olympus lenses are much better than all those old lumix lenses in general.

Expensive when it came out but manages to give that full frame look without being overly soft like most lenses at that aperture. I wish Panasonic would also make a 20mm f/0.95 and it would really make m43 more appealing for people that feel they need shallow DOF.

    Great to see the improvements with the 15mm! It is now most certainly usable. Do you have any Olympus lenses you can test?
    The G9II is a great option. The size to performance ratio is optimal IMHO.

    Been waiting for this!
    Do you think panasonic has reached sony in terms of autofocus? Is it finally the time that people stop worshiping their sonys for their autofocus?
    Also if the autofocus is fast you can always slow it down to make it look smoother(for video because for photography you want the opposite). Just a note for the fanboys that will come here and try to find something to argue that their sony is better😅

      Sony's focus pull is great, but the LUMIX focus pull is faster in most scenarios. It will also track you further back in the frame with human detection on. Sony's dedicated eye tracking is very sticky up close but it can lose you furrther back. I find hte S5II and X to be better than my Sony's for talk to camera pieces. The problem is a lot of people don't understand the modes on the Panasonic cameras, but it's at a point now where it's better than people realise.

    That Leica 12mm 1.4 was lifesaving!!!! I was gonna pre-buy one for the GH7 and you spared me until the Firmware gets updated! Great video!

      Glad it helped. I used to own that lens back in the day. I find it also has too much Chroma for my liking. Something about that lens structure has always struggled with AF, not sure what it is.

    I just got my GH7 on the actual release date from B&H and I’m very disappointed with the PDAF. The focus is drifting and it seems no better than the GH6 so I’m sending it back.
