The scene where Logan slaps Roman is one of my favorite scenes. You see these grown up people suddenly turn into children again and see the dynamic they had. Kendall defending his siblings from their abusive father, Shiv consoling her brother, and poor Roman taking the abuse and being humiliated. This show is layered and so damn good.

according to the scripts that were released and weren't included in the show. there was a conversation between stewy and kendall after he passed away that how he “threw a show at kendall” because he got the capital of a country wrong and ken regards it as “good technique” and doesn't acknowledge his own abuse when stewy mentions again a game called “dinner for winners” where he made kendall serve stewy food because he lost and the script says “doesn't immediately recalls” meaning he doesn't remember his own abuse :/

That slap scene tells you SO MUCH as to how their childhood played out. Shiv messes up, but Logan doesn't shout at her for it. As soon as Roman gets involved, he's abused and Kendall's the only one who stands up to his father and protects his brother. Also, notice that Shiv doesn't REALLY know how to console Roman, she's used to being the princess who gets away with anything. I love that even in his broken state, Kendall still yells and stands up to Logan. And now we also get to see why Roman is the way he is

  • @partycitydumpster
    @partycitydumpster Год назад +45

Logan cannot handle people talking about his age or mortality. It was Roman using the word "dinosaur" over and over that set him off. Marcia was first put out in the cold when she suggested he sell the company because "you're old, you've not been well." Instances of this are all over the place, no one can remind Logan he's in his 80s without consequence.

Since the show is written around not having a lot of direct exposition, and zero flashbacks, we have to learn about their entire lives in this dysfunctional family by reading into what we see in the present, which is easier because they're all emotionally stunted and prone to falling into the same patterns of behavior. As spoiled children, all the kids are more or less just as immature as they were when they were little. In some ways they're adults and have adult problems, but in lots of ways, they're reflections of themselves as kids, being stupid and petty and constantly stuck in this servile relationship with their father. This is yet another microcosm of how they're still the same children at heart, going through the same motions. Dad gets angry at Shiv who is the most spoiled and treated like a princess as Logan's precious only daughter, who we've constantly been told is daddy's favorite, so Shiv pisses Logan off the most because she's such a brat and so spoiled and so much more likely to defy him or act out. Logan is angry at Shiv, but he won't hit his little girl, so he takes out his aggression on the weak and scared Roman that is easily trained by violence, and big brother Kendall has to defend his siblings.
I will say, you claim that it would be unrealistic for a real company to deliver such a bad and messy statement with tons of petty ego incompetent ego clashing, but just think about every insanely out of touch thing you've ever seen a business or a single rich guy like a Musk or a Donald Trump Jr do to embarrass them/himself. This wasn't a press release either, this was a very sudden event during a rich-people-only gathering. If the company was going to make a real press comment to the general public, they'd definitely have put more time and HR people on to work out the right media angle to push. I do think that the show, as a mixture between absurdist comedy and drama, and as a heightened reality Shakespearian tall tale, that the show isn't trying to be ultra realistic most of the time, because it's presenting such an ironic depiction of these grand narrative archetypes, and it has a million thematic Shakespeare connections and Great King Leary connections, and the whole thing is a very thorough metaphor for medieval serfdom autocracy. The show has so much metaphorical symbolism, it's impossible to also make it completely realistic with that much absurdist comedy and heightened metaphor in it. Give and take, the show has extreme representations of ideas that are unbelievable but also sometimes do reflect real life's level of absurdity, but in exchange it has so much more depth than it would've had otherwise.

Their dad has fked their brains up since childhood, always pitting them against each other. Yes they come together sometimes, but they'd stab each other in the back the first chance they get as well because they can't help themselves.
Also, I'm not sure how you thought Shiv did a good job on stage, she was actually letting her ego be on full display, hence the dinosaur comment. She repeatedly keeps proving to logan why she's such a bad choice, and he keeps trying to get her to realize it as well.

5:25 that's not what she's been wanting this whole time though, she knows she'd basically get thrown under the bus if they center this around her - wanting to be part of the solution or to advise on it doesn't mean she wants to be *the face of the scandal* lmao. The main reason she wasn't involved in any of this is that she's a woman and *now* the sole reason they want her on the team is bc they can hide behind her being a woman for malpractices that have nothing to do with her.. i can see why she wasn't trying to throw herself into it. She tends to say things that amount to "i'm not the right person for the job" a lot and here i think there was also a hint of "well since y'all don't really tell me shit i'm not helping" (w her asking why their dad keeps hoarding crucial information), mixed with other things.
Idk what's causing the confusion - maybe it's bc a lot of good faith is still attributed to Logan for some reason? like he's actually trying to help his kids' growth w his games? who knows.
As for the "relationship rules" i don't really get the confusion either ngl lmao maybe it's just me. The idea is that they can indeed fuck anyone as long as the other can't put a name to their face and whatnot, that does not sound crazy to me and so far there hasn't been any abuse of that rule that i can think of. And her getting jealous isn't hypocritical either given that rule, if you'd prefer your partner fuck someone you don't know i'd assume you wouldn't like seeing them slowly trying to get there either - Tom was (rightfully) jealous too when Nate was being disrespectful in front of him while she kept swatting him away. Like everyone's entitled to still be annoyed by all of this but it literally makes sense 😭 Mind you she apologized, for those who needed her to ig (i know it doesn't make a difference either way when it comes to her but still).
The physical violence was obviously hinted at in terms of reactions but it was actually mentioned before, one instance was during the meeting early S02 where Logan wanted everyone around the table to give their thoughts about whether he should sell the company or not. When he realized that Kendall was basically getting a promotion after betraying their dad while he's gotten violence for much less you can tell his reaction echoes all of that.

How is trying to signal that there's at least one person around the company that isn't against change and seems to think it's an issue that's even bigger than the company somehow a bad thing? This is without getting into why y'all think the random ass daughter saying she doesn't see eye to eye w her dad on *everything* is somehow the worst thing in this context like god forbid one of them isn't his parrot day in and day out lmao

A recurring theme in this show that's REALLY important right up to (and especially in) the finale is "no real people." It first came up in the episode where we found out about the sexual assault cover-ups on the cruise lines. They didn't involve "real people" according to the Logan, the family, and the company. The waiter Ken got killed was not a "real person." Shiv says it again here: The woman Tom was flirting with was a "real person" because she is at Argestes and in their circle. The random downtown actor she hooked up with was not a "real person," so he doesn't matter. Shiv and Roman are probably the worst about this. Shiv hides it better than him, but if you look closely ALL her actions are dictated by who she considers real and who she doesn't. She's pretty awful.
Also... for a while there you two really seemed like you were rooting for them come together and successfully cover up the numerous and abominable assaults of numerous people on the cruise lines!

Kendall is perfect to run things but Logan is the issue standing in his way. And this always results in him giving in to his habits. As always. Shiv did horrendously on that panel and she showed the entire world why she’s not suited to be CEO and why she first needs to do training around the world for the duration Logan said. I know your watching this show with a modern eye where women can do no wrong but please try to pay attention.

Respectfully, if you think Kendall is competent enough to be CEO, I do not think you should be lecturing anyone's inability to follow the show. All the children are incompetent. Including Kendall. The biggest example is how Kendall screwed up the board vote against his father. Despite Frank's advice he calls to check in on one of the investors the evening before the vote and does such a poor job handling the call that he spooks her, which leads to Kendall going all the way to Long Island (again ignoring Frank's advice), which leaves him extremely vulnerable to events such as grounded helicopters, traffic jams, accidents, what have you. The show consistently shows him completely incapable of absorbing the advice and feedback of others. He is caught in his own bubble and it is prone to bursting.

In literally every single episode they react to they're shitting on Shiv, but the one semi-positive thing they say about her in one episode makes u think its bc they think "woman can do no wrong" lmaoo. And FYI, the whole point of the show is showing how the 3 kids are ALL incapable to run it for different reasons. Everyone just hates Shiv more than the other 2 bc they don't like when women do 'bad' things.

He did it anyway, and screwed it up to the point where he felt he had to go fix it the following morning. Even though it risked everything by narrowing his margin for error and random chance--and Frank AGAIN told him not to do it.
It is not the only time in the series where he makes an awful decision in spite of advice he gets from actually competent people around him. Because he is delusional enough to believe he is a master negotiatior and an expert who can do everything. You could also look at how he handled the call with the bank.
