- Singer and songwriter Jimmy Webb performs his classic "MacArthur Park" for the first time ever in the place that inspired it, MacArthur Park in Los Angeles, June 15, 2013. The show was the kickoff to a summer concert series at Levitt Pavilion in the Park, and Webb treated the crowd to an hour-long performance of his hits. The sirens in the background are just part of the ambience.
You can see that even as a famous, now happily married and quite successful man, Jimmy Webb still feels intense genuine pain and passion when performing this song, which is based on a true story from a rather tragic (and also financially impoverished) time in young adult life, struggling as a budding artist, college dropout and poor Oakie migrant lost in LA.
He was in over his head in love with someone who loved him too but was also using him, was well out of his league for the time being, but whom also could see his potential and was intimidated by it even as she tired of his present failures and instability. They didn't communicate well and had an unstable semi long distance relationship that was sometimes close but often far and with repeated breakups and reunitings.
His future dreams of success involved her too and his mother had also been his main artistic support. But then she died young, never seeing his success, his father left (they didn't speak for 40 years but are now finally close again) and Suzy married someone else which didn't last too long. Jimmy's dreams had died too and he was feeling despondent when as he put it, God gave him this song to help heel his aching soul, and to share with the world. It would be several more years and Jimmy Webb would already be experiancing rising success as a writer and composer before "MacArthur Park" came out and soon became a huge hit.
Beautiful. Thank you ✨
I was there. It was a magic night. We took my father in law without telling him what was happening and he started singing MacArthur Park. And we laughed. And then Jimmy Webb sang all his great songs. Thanks for posting this video.
Thanks Jimmy Webb for all of your songs--you're one of the best of the best!!
I love this crazy man💕🎹🎤
Jimmy, thanks for all your great songs. The world has become passionate because of you.
You still got it, Jimmy. That middle part with some difficult piano work. Sounds like an orchestra. I'm in awe.
a true master of his art & this song will endure through the centuries like a fine wine o r a piece of wonderful art!!
a heartbreaking song---Jimmy Webb is & has a masterpiece!!
Absolutely heartbreaking lyrics. Jimmy Webb created a masterpiece out of the breakup with Susan Horton; it's hard to believe she rejected such love and passion; what most girls could only dream of. They used to meet in the park, share lunches, left over cake would melt in the rain and this is the metaphor used to capture the green of the park dissolving through tears of lost love, that took so long to nurture but the recipe of this love can never be found again.
I was just 12 when this song first came out sung by Richard Harris. I knew then it was something special, something behind it, more than just a commercial tune. I am glad I lived long enough to find out the meaning of the words and to hear this wonderful performance by Jimmy.
wow. Thank you so much for the info. It's a "big love" song.
+Andrew Ball Finally, someone who "gets" it.
***** Hurrah! Another convert!
so very well said & I agree!!
I'm wrong it was her cousin!!
Gorgeous lush composition...beautifully played and moving lyrics....unique work of art by a master artist
It was beautiful, haunting, surreal, magical
Beautiful ! ,just beautiful !
such a masterpiece Jimmy wrote. !!! and he still does a great job playing it.. I met him in Nashville.. I hope to see him again.
hauntingly beautiful lyrics!!
he's singing about the LOVE of his life!!
MacArthur Park has endured the test of time!!
Un show man irezistibil ! ❤
what a great rendition of own creation!
of his own creation!!
9th grade, one girl, this song - imbedded in my brain forever...
I love this song my favorite artists to sing it is Donna Summer
I heard the Richard Harris version in the 80s or 90s, and it stayed with me like a light in the dark ness.
However, this is on another level ! . It's where "Mac Archer park " truly belongs.
Jimmy Webb was inspired to compose MacAarthur Park as a symphony to tell the Creation Story
I can give a full explanation of the Verses but more important are the 🎵🎶 Rift's that are contained in the Many Versions by other arrangements
a song of unrequited love!
Not quite unrequited actually, but definitely complecated with bad communication and plenty of neglect under difficult circumstances. See my response and comments on this page. She actually wrote some songs about/for him!
Not quite unrequited actually.. See my comments on this page, -Suzy actually wrote some songs for Jimmy too!
I was THERE.XOXO
I love the siren accompanyment
By the way, if you want to see another great live musical performance of this tune, check out the once-in-a-lifetime version by Will Lee on David Letterman (with Jimmy Webb on piano) and a full band and orchestra. It might be the true definitive performance. It’s on YT.
I'm surprised Will didn't split his "stri-ped pair of pants" when he went for - and hit - that final high note! lol Outstanding performance!
what I was really praying (literally)... was that "the girl in the cotten yellow dress"...Susan Ronstadt....(the actual girl he was singing about)....would have come from behind the stage with a yellow cotten dress on.....and put her arms around Jimmy Webb....and kissed him....and that she would have been the one to present him the cake....
No one sang it like Richard Harris. Crazy how so many people here prefer Donna Summer over everyone else.
Great storyteller
a great piano player!!
Amazing ! ✌️❤️🌹🎶
so heartbreaking to see him perform the one & only song that immortalizes Susan Horton; so much passion devoted to this song---amazing
Who was Susan HOrton?
a wonderful performer!!
Amazing
mastery of the form
Great version of a great song! Jimmy Web is a great pianist too!
he certainly is!!
The Donna Summer version is my alltime favorite song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
to understand it even more, try watching the BBC version of the Snow Goose, with Richard Harris and Jenny Agutter
@@steveeverett1736 maybe, but Richard Harris is completely unknown in europe, moreover he sings badly, without Donna Summer this song would never have crossed the borders of calfornia, Jimmy Webb never pays homage to Donna in these interviews, I find it distressing because thanks to her he still earns a lot of money today, I think he does not assume that this song is had a disco version, but sorry it is the most beautiful and the most successful orchestration
@@stefduvail1 I agree on the Richard Harris 'singing' issue, he was basically a decent actor and a poet, he was never a good singer. I thought he would have been known more in Europe since the UK was 'next door', but as far as understanding the song, watching the Snow Goose would be a great first step. Could we say that Richard set up the foundations for the song that Donna turned in to a Castle? For me, that was the song that made me realize Donna could do a proper emotional song
Pretty intense!
one of the best song
writers ever! he he doesn't ñeed to credit the singers of his lyrics because without we would never have heard these amazing songs:)
💛
Ok so I guess it's Suzy (not Susie) Horton Ronstadt. -but check Out Debbie Vicari (since deceased);on RUclips (Song: In The Stardust, writen by Suzy Ronstadt, For Jimmy Webb, and sung by Debbie about 10 years ago. Suzy lives in Tucson now and sings in a group called 'I Hear Voices'. They're pretty good actually. You can tell looking at her picture even now how stunningly beautiful she must have looked when she was younger, with really a somewhat angelic looking face!
Years ago Native north Americans never built cities or permanent locations
They build Camps and moved often to follow the food
Their elders knew young braves might get lost in forest and not find their way home
They were taught
To find and old oak tree and knock to awake the Tree Spirit
Who would guide you back to Camp Safely
Today
Knock on Wood is when your visit is over Knock on Wood to:
Get Home Safely
Remember That
It’s not for good luck but travel home safely

Ok ....Elephant in the room . Its great that you wrote some magnificent song but it's best that someone else recorded them. Elephant nodding as it trundles out the low doorway out of the room. Everyone sighs and coughs embarrassed..
Oh but it’s fine; you know going in. But there’s no better singer who can’t sing. I love that he loves to sing. I love that he’s not sick to death of playing MP. And doesn’t his singing make him a little bit more like the rest of us? If he could sing and compose so many great songs, it’d just be annoying.
He's an amazing songwriter, doesn't matter if he's the best one to sing it, the genius is there....no "elephant in the room", Please!
@@johnsrabeLike Burt Bacharach .
@@joycevarley4364Like Burt Bacharach .
Donna Summer's version, which is the one and only that REALLY made this song popular (and still remembered until today) he - strange enough - did not mention! Oh, please!
Dude, people may know of Donna Summers version, but it will always be Richard Harris who will forever be associated with this song
@@jmmmnliberal8274 yes, Harris's version is the definitive one. There is a clip of him performing it live sometime in the late '60's at a variety show for the Queen, it is stunning.

Oh, god. Why does he need to mention Donna Summer? EVERYONE ALREADY KNOWS SHE SANG THE SONG. She made millions off it, too.
If there was no funny Richard Harris story, he wouldn’t have mentioned him either. Stop looking for petty injustices.
metaphorical
Did I miss something? Did he not mention DONNA SUMMER who probably earned him the most money from her recording and performances? I believe Jimmy thanked producer Giorgio Moroder for giving him the ability to buy a Porsche out of the royalties.... How could you not mention Donna Summer? She gave that song LIFE, and the bridge was somewhat prophetic for her too.
I can name a person who made more than Jimmy Webb from Donna Summer’s multi-million record sales of MacArthur Park … Donna Summer. If he hadn’t written the song, she wouldn’t of had the hit, and she would be out several million dollars. I think she was OK, and you don’t need to look for petty injustices on her part.
Right? Wut the heck ?!
I heard him say one of his songwriting idols was Burt Bacharach. I will say he sings a hellava lot better than Burt
Slimeball? Do you know Jimmy Webb?
I love Donna Summers version the best.
Paul Malone RICHARD HARRIS IS TE BEST!!
give me an answer!!
Great composer and musician, terrible singer
funny he didn't mention donna summers version WHICH made him the most money. slimeball.
that is an interesting question!
always with name calling
Maybe it’s not about the money. He’s clearly made enough with all of the songs he’s written. Maybe it’s the ones that were special to him. And who’s the slimeball ,perhaps the one who’s name-calling?
Jesus, people. Donna Summer sold MILLIONS OF COPIES of her recording of MacArthur Park. She made millions of dollars from it. And she would not have made that money had it not been for Jimmy Webb. So calm down and stop looking for petty injustices to call out.
google says this is the worst song...
At least Jimmy has a sense of Humor about his Awful Song.
Sinatra's version is great, but he doesn't sing all the goofy lyrics.
idiot; How many "awful" songs have you written?
John Carmichael The lyrics are actual things that he saw happen in the park. You should look up metaphor in the dictionary.
Gerry Dooley And then just go away, don't forget to take your opinion with you.
Well put. ♫ Just go away, Jerry Dooley, just go Away. ♫
