If I remember correctly, Slayer wasn't even considered that high in the tiers. It's just that everyone agreed that, occasionally, if you made a mistake, he would just EXPLODE like a stick of dynamite sometimes.
Yeah in fact he's considered pretty low to mid tier. But since his ability to steal game is pretty high he still has a place. As kizzie once said, Slayer is a good tournament character, if you do one mistake he can take 2 games and you're out just like that.
If it’s danger time, Slayer all of a sudden becomes top tier lol
@@ikeshamus6903 tbf the entire cast becomes elphelt tier broken in danger time
He's like that in games where he's high tier too. Main difference in +R is imo that he is less likely to depend on a counter hit, but doesn't stun as easily.
@@DctrBread the main difference is that from +R to Xrd quite a number of his used to be incredible normals got butchered and he became a character that had to take way more risks all around
Sajam had a great point about the topic of hating what someone else's character does.

LITERALLY THIS.
The ability of people running Top Tier mains to complain about the tools of Mid to Low tier characters never ceases to amaze.
Don't get me wrong. There is stuff that exists that needs addressing from time to time. Wobbling is a fairly big one.
...But people running a character with superior frame data to like 90% of the roster whinging about a character that's designed to be high-risk/high-reward and getting bodied off of them doing stupid shit, because they didn't respect their opponent? Nah. Sometimes you just need a wakeup call.
@@DairunCates reminds me of my days in ranked ultimax. played exclusively Adachi whos considered painfully average but has some cheeky stuff that keeps him from being truly bad. The amount of Narukamk/Mitsuru/Minazuki players that would complain about Heat Riser or Fear was insane, which was dumb cause those three had the most easy nonsense the game has to offer, And what did Adachi have? heat riser, which he NEEDS to be able to survive

As much as I want Slayer to be in Strive, I know for a fact he will get heavily nerfed. His damage probably won’t be as high and he will probably won’t have so many of his shenanigans. But as long as I can Mappa Hunch into wallbreak I’ll be happy
If there's one thing characters have in that damn hand is ridiculous damage. He will be nerfed design wise surely though
I was just thinking the same thing!!! I want him in Strive too but knowing ArcSystems they'll smack him with the nerf stick like they did Ky smh
Nah, I can almost guarantee that his base damage will be buffed, wallbreaks alone will make a lot of the TOD corner shenanigans impossible. Now the dash canceling on the other hand.... that probably won't survive
@@f7y6 yeah...I forgot about that dash canceling yeah they'll make him into a whole new character
Dash canceling unfortunately may get hit, but he for sure will be a TOD machine

As a Slayer main I feel the need to comment on here.
Slayer is definitely a frustrating character to play against, especially when you don't know how to deal with him, although he has some distinct weaknesses that, despite being stressful and annoying to play against, generally make him sub-par (at least in Xrd). He also has some pretty bad matchups in +R despite being very strong due to his weakness to projectiles (although he has enough tools to move around things if you know how)
I feel like you should have mentioned how Slayer's neutral functions, you sort of touched on it talking about his dash, but his neutral is generally very committal and risky. He also is especially vulnerable to projectiles and even more so projectile yrc (a system mechanic he can't use all that well outside of movement and a safejump, which isn't bad, just not nearly as good as many other chars yrcs). He also doesn't have access to one of the most important movement options in Gear which is dash fd brake. Not having dash fd break makes it really hard for him to safely approach or cover distance between fireballs. He can dash through stuff and bdc around things, but that is usually committal, or doesn't really allow him to approach, just avoid.
Also, Slayer's damage is only good with a counter hit or with meter, most of his meterless, non-counter hit combos aren't going to do too much damage, although he does get pretty consistent knockdowns outside of longer range grounded hits.
Overall, I think Slayer is mostly a very stressful character to fight. He's the kind of character that can kill you off of one or two mistakes, so it can be stressful to keep him away and locked down, especially with bdc available.
Also good video LK! I've been watching your stuff lately and I really like the insight you give into fighting games as an experienced player, keep up the good work!
I feel similarly as another Slayer main. Though as an addendum, I don't know why LK said that his combo conversion potential is crazy, because it's not. It's good *with meter*, and even then your damage potential off of mappa (even CH), is weak. He really needs CH + meter, unless it's something really stupid like you got hit by CH IL or CH K PB, and even then it doesn't even always lead to a combo unless it's in corner.
Well said. I main Slayer as well and some of the commentary in this video really left me scratching my head.
absolutely! i main slayer and you're spot on
This aged like fine wine
A 100 year old wine, you might say
I did small french tourneys back then with Guilty Gear XX in Paris, and Slayer was outright banned
BRUH. In all honesty, that's quite funny.
Well, at least you can justify banning due to the bite infinite for that version.
"i hate every character that isn't my character" every gg player ever.
Guess we don't need a reupload on this one huh
I love Slayer....in +R. Hate his Xrd self, so much less cool stuff he does now, and he just kills you super fast to compensate. He is one of the chars that was hurt the most by the removal of force breaks.
Yeah, totally agree with you. It feels as if though he got crippled in terms of the moveset, but given absurd damage to compensate, making it an all-or-nothing "gambling" playstyle.
LK so ahead of the game that he went back in time to drop this one
What a time to have this in my feed.

Bro really does NOT want slayer in Strive
Loved the editing in this one!
I've played a little gg over the years but I've always loved slayer just for his animation. I just feel strong when I see slayer. He just fights with absolutely everything he has. It's beautiful. If you can every throw a punch or a kick even slightly like slayer, then you're getting close to perfect. Just power, pure power.
Welp…. Look who they added to strive
Im looking for the 5 pilebunker combo, you guys know where I can find it?
your no longer safe
Slayer's the sort of character who struggles with fundamentals in places; bad at conversions off ordinary normals, he has trouble with long range and keeping the opponent pressured for long periods of time, and thus applying risc. But *if* he gets that counter hit or that corner Heavy or that anti air, his opponents explode. His ability to make any special move of his a reversal is also very interesting.
He's the sort of character who's going to be working harder than his opponent, but who also gets rewarded for that hard work if the user really pushes themselves, he's sick.
man really changed the thumbnail on a 2 year old video huh
Everyone else: "why don't you block????"
SL mains: "make me"
I know I'm late af and I didn't play xrd, but, would giving him a blood rage similar to Nago help make him bearable in strive? That way he can't just loop specials in the corner.
but isn't that true for EVERY GG character tho? everybody fucking hates every character except (sometimes) their main
That's not true at all. Everyone hates every character INCLUDING their mains.

A character like Slayer built to whiff punish could be really fun. I'm scared of how much damage strive slayer would do, though!
He won't be able to chain his pile bunkers due to wallbreaks and RC scales massively in Strive.
@@seokkyunhong8812 yeah true, but as long as I can even land one ch bunker I'll be happy

The baiting and burst damage the character has to make reminds me of Melee's Ganondorf tbh.
I strongly like Slayer so I'm excited for this one 😁
its funny cuz i just got rev2 recently and picked slayer
I’ve been a fan of the vampire dandy since I first started in Xrd
Kinda unrelated but I've gotten into Fantasy Strike lately (cuz I'm hella broke lol) and having never played any GG game before Strive, online I was hearing for the first time that Slayer inspired my favorite FS character/main, DeGrey. The design philosophy for the moveset is almost 1:1. I get why he was such a problem 😂
Hey, fellow Degrey main! Good to see that folks are still bringing down the JUSTICE!
Not gonna lie, I live for counter hit final arbiters. Feels so amazing to get that callout.
@@webbowser8834 No doubt! I mean this justice isn't gonna dispense itself ⚖️
For me it's fishing for that counter hit 4A and taking them for 4 when I get it, free 😂 they just gotta sit and hold the 6A BB that follows. Probably more demoralizing than seeing counter BB > BB honestly since it's longer in duration and comes from a mere poke. Would hate to be on the receiving end of one of those lmao
@@DrEcho Yeah, I'm starting to get the hang of fishing for counterhit 4As myself. I still win a bunch of my games with cheesey grab/5A mixes. It's basic as heck, but Degray has this combination of pressure and good walk speed that he can just get away with grab spam.
@@webbowser8834 haha last thing I'll say and only because you mentioned it.. but another dimension to the already oppressive throw game I recently discovered is conditioning people to block when they see B, especially if they've reliably been able to block punish BB and BC, and just take them for a surprise throw ride, usually when I need to clutch out one hp. Haha maybe literally everybody already knows this but I only just realized you can act frame 1 after the animation if you don't do A, B, or C, so BT is a near unreactable counterpoint dash up throw that they're already/easily conditioned to block against, almost guaranteed to work the first time and will haunt their mental throughout the rest of the match as another mixup option to guess whether to block. (since the people I've played so far don't seem to realize at first) I'm sure when I get out of bronze people will be savvy to it.
So now I wanna experiment with the counter play options for reacting to DeGrey's B to keep me honest and not rely on abusing it or getting too predictable. But on the ground for many of the cast it's looking more and more like an RPS game just to not get smoked - unless a character has a good tool to reliably and safely stuff the retreat when it's guaranteed to be vulnerable (or the approach, betting against BC) or can move such that they can evade all/most options
Hello wassup , I really enjoy watching your videos! I’m thinking about trying guilty gear strive but I’m wondering if the game is hard to get into?
I main Leo in strive and strive is my first guilty gear game im really hoping slayer gets added next
Welcome back everybody.
Only 22 days left
Slayer really felt he was a Strive character. This makes you think if that would benefit for him in Strive because he is gonna even do even more damage or won’t benefit him because most of the cast can do high damage conversions in Strive
LK was able to predict slayer in strive next he will predict answer
everyone hates everyone that they don't play, is part of the GG experience
Naw, sometimes you hate the player you do play.
I play asuka in Tekken 7 and I hate mirror matches.
The thing that most people dont get with him is the fact that the guy has POKES that are freaking +.Now that might very well change in Strive but holyshit,Slayer's 5K,2K,2P, Dandy Step(214P/K) 2nd hit are ALL + on block. He already doesnt havent gatlings like most Strive characters dont..LOL
Coming March 19th,you ALL are gonna stay Dandy my friends and kneel to _Lord Slayer_ 🤣
I think there’s a good reason why he has so many plus normals. Mainly since he doesn’t have a projectile and he’s a primarily close range character. None of his normals are disjointed either (unless we wanna count 6p as a disjoint but really that’s just scraping the bottom of the barrel). I think his frame data on his normals and ability to dash cancel will be big factors for if he’s viable or not in strive.
@@THE_BIG_OL_UNIT With that said since in the story in Strive right now Zato is even addressing him as "Lord Slayer",there a chance that he wont have a blood gauge of his own to deal with? Id consider 2H and his 6H disjointed to be honest due to the fact that they are apart from frame traps via 5K
@@zeokenx2 I mean he’s never had a blood gauge to begin with. Also if he did have one and it allowed him to cancel specials like nago, pilebunker would be the absolute best move in the game because he would be able to cancel into mappa or undertow. 2H can sometimes feel like a disjoint, but there are a lot of characters that have tools against it. Idk about 6H though. I mainly use it to just catch jumps in the corner.
@@THE_BIG_OL_UNIT What I did in my short time in XRD with Slayer was 5K > 6H > Dandy (Under Pressure) since the 1st hit on block was 0 if it wasnt JF blocked(harder to do in Strive),and what Ive seen was that 6H stuff out ALOT of moves than just jumps. While there is tools vs 2H,that move on itself can be thrown out and RCed even on whiff and goes over other low profile lows.If those same properities of Slayer's 2H come to Strive,Gio's 2D for example would be outclassed by it.Slayer's tick throw game is gonna be stupid good too thanks to 2F throws in Strive.
Couldn't you OS a throw and a 6P for the fS iad?
One of the best comments I’ve ever heard regarding the psychology of guilty gear fans is “every player hates every character except for the one they play”
To give some stronger specifics on Slayer and his weaknesses;
- Slayer's grounded gatlings are incredibly limited, as strong as his S buttons are, he cannot gatling into them at all, he cant gatling into his 5HS either, his buttons have pretty good stun so he can do some links and flexible pressure, but his stuff will have a lot of gaps, which hurts his ability to accumulate risc which he really needs, he has pretty flexible gatlings into his D buttons and 6P at least
- Mappa Hutch his main gap closer is either minus or 0 on hit, im not entirely sure, and -2 on block, it's also usually his only ender after hitting a raw normal or short gatling, other than 2D sometimes at closer range, meaning Slayer cant apply pressure after a lot of weaker combos that safely
- In general, Slayer's ability to convert into any kind of meaningful combo is incredibly dependant on either air connect, R-RC, or having his opponent right in the corner, without those he gets very little, but with them he gets quite a lot, he gets incredibly high damage if he has both R-RC *and* the corner
- Dandy Step is interesting, Under Pressure (S) leads into an incredibly potent High/Low mixup (tbh if you have no risc, just taking the high doesnt hurt much), however Dandy step itself is pretty vulnerable to getting stuffed, to compensate for this, Slayer's other 3 follow ups are built to deal with different options from the opponent, Crosswheel Heel (K) is upper body invuln, not a reversal, and very minus on block, it leads to a very strong combo on hit though, Helter Skelter (HS) is low invuln, very plus on block, but doesnt lead into much on hit (more if you have 50 tension) (it's also one of the best YRCs in the game for oki pressure), and lastly Pilebunker (P) is disjointed but not invuln, doesnt give you much on normal hit, is incredibly minus on block and has bad recovery on whiff, but deals tremendous absurd amounts of damage on counter hit (or in the corner with K ver. or R-RC), all of them are mids, it depends on who he's fighting, but usually the risk/reward is in his opponents favor, Crosswheel Heel being as bad on block as it is is the biggest issue, Dandy Step into nothing into Blitz is an option in some cases, but it's iffy
A lot of these things are knowledge checks, but if the opponent knows about them, they can do a lot to bother slayer, his dependency on the corner and his opponents respect for Dandy pressure especially
Do you think strive will get sin??
Well, he just got announced, so here he comes!

Y'all about to start strongly disliking all over again.
Cant you technically do the "reversal" trick with mirazh with Millia, although it seems like less s than what you showed.
Edit: Its way more committal with Millia, I do understand that
You can't, she isn't fully invincible
@@LordKnightfgc I understand and appreciate the feedback. I think I expressed a bad comparison there. Sometimes by accident or poor judgement, ive "space grabbed" by using mirazh- either going through a startup (or recovery sometimes) or around a moves hitbox for a really quick whiff punish, essentially. Slayer, on the other hand, is oppressively going straight through and attacking their attempted stuff, which makes it a bad comparison in hindsight.
Edit: I launched training to see what the timing was like. You can go straight through a ky vapor thrust and stay in front. While mirazh technically isnt invincible in the same way some other moves are, doesn't the outcome function the same way?
