  • Hope you enjoyed watching and learning about BLW. Keep in mind this was Bowie's first week of solids from the beginning of January. We have progressed with combination puree and finger foods and more complex combinations. We are now also focusing on high protein foods in his diet too.
    If you want to learn more about Baby-Led Weaning, I have linked my blog post about it below:

    I would really encourage your partner to not push food into his mouth, especially when he's quite clearly turning his head away as a clear "no thank you". The point of BLW is to allow baby to lead the way with food, doing this can cause fussiness, aversions and a huge choking hazard, as well as generally making the whole mealtime experience unpleasant. I know it's hard because you want them to enjoy it and actually eat, but honestly, it may take a LONG time before he's having a consistently full meal, and that's okay. My partner is the exact opposite and always pulls the food away because he panics about nothing, so I have to feed my girl when I'm home alone, and even then she doesn't really eat, just smushes throws and squeals 😅

      At 6 months my babe also just throws his food and smooshes it, he is learning the texture before bringing it to his mouth and that’s completely okay and normal! 😊 I think sometimes we just get excited and miss cues Im glad you gave a gentle reminder because cues are very important 💗

    Don’t fret if he doesn’t eat anything for months, my boy started at 6 months and didn’t start actually consuming the food until about 10 months. It’s all just playing and sensory for them. Just make sure you don’t put food in his mouth as it is a choking hazard since they may not be prepared for it, hence the name name Baby Led ☺️ my boy is now 12 months old and is a great eater, it feels like you are getting no where with progression then they suddenly just click and understand ☺️ Bowie looked like he had so much fun!

      Well said and well done 😀 My son is 3.5 and we also did BLW. He eats everything and we always heard - wait for the food aversions, toddlers will only eat what’s white. That never happened. He’s super and eats everything and we always eat together. Of course there are certain foods he doesn’t like but always is always keen to try and keeps telling me that he might try again in a few weeks or when he’s a teenager and he does it and sometimes changes his mind. Plus he can use fork, spoon and butter knife since he was exposed to those from the start. I believe it’s all from the BLW

      @@ElsasWholesomeLife I wouldn’t worry about it too much - as long as he gets his milk that’s all it matters. You’re doing a fabulous great job and he looks amazing and healthy. My boy didn’t start eating properly until he was around 10/11 months. He would eat a bite or 2 but was on the breast pretty much 24/7 and now he eats as much as I do and still breastfeeds too. It’s amazing watching them taste all different foods and feel all different textures. You never know what they’d like the most and at around 10 months my boy’s favourite food was vegan curry. Now he doesn’t like it - he told me he had enough as a baby and he says he still remembers it! 😂 Enjoy every moment of Bowie’s food ‘adventure’ 😊

    Pear is also a good "first food" as it is low allergenic. ..it can either be lightly steamed or raw cut very thinly . you can also buy a thin clear plastic floor mat or a piece a couple of square mtrs of thick clear plastic table cloth ( the type you buy by the metre & they cut off how much you want) that way you can put under the high chair for any food he might throw on the ground ..easy to clean up.& Wipe down & protect your flooring & rugs etc..

    Just a heads up that 'food before 1 is just for fun' sounds good but not actually correct. Babies need iron rich foods once they start to become more active and their needs increase. You're doing great, just make sure you're not putting false info out there. We did really well with BLW mixed with mashes (same foods just mashed up so she could actually eat the food and not just play with it), I can attest to its success because I've now got an almost three year old that eats EVERYTHING. She's a wonderful eater and I've never had heartache at the dinner table haha xxx

    🌟Protip🌟(from a nutrition & dietetics student): Normally it’s a good idea to introduce iron-rich foods around 6 months because the baby’s iron stores are starting to get depleted at that time. So introducing things like unseasoned tofu, mashed legumes (or even unseasoned meat, fish, and egg whites for non-vegans) is usually recommended as a starting point 😊 But obviously this is general advice, you should always check with your healthcare provider!

    • @izabelam9416
      @izabelam9416 3 года назад +1

      So interesting you say that - we did BLW and we are not vegans and for the 1st meal we gave my son carrots, potatos and chicken since that’s what we had and he played with veggies and ate all the chicken which was very surprising for us that he even did. He was little over 6 months. It just shows that babies will take and get what they need nutritionally. We’re diary free though and he always reaches and loves foods reach in calcium so I guess he needs them

      Thank you for saying this I always worry when I hear the saying food before 1 is just for fun because it’s actually incorrect as there are certain nutrients that do not exist in breast milk and are only stored in the body for the first 6 months it is recommended that by 12 months a babies daily eating should be based on solid meals with milk as a top up and in between snack. Their has been a huge rise in kids suffering from nutrient deficiencies especially iron in recent years due to this new belief on milk still being a whole food source up until 12 months.

      That goes against baby led weaning. The approach is to give soft food in finger length pieces so they can pick it up with their hands and chew it themselves. The most important thing is to learn the difference between gagging and choking and if it makes you feel better do an infant first aid course so you feel prepared. I had to teach my nephew how to eat solids because my sister was too panicky and if they start to gag and you panic they can see that and then panic often inhaling the food into their wind pipe just stay as calm as you can.

    It’s best to avoid anything with skin as it can’t be broken down by the gums the way other foods can and can get stuck to the roof of the mouth or sides of the throats causing their gag reflex to be initiated without stopping and often can’t be removed without you sticking your finger in their mouth to remove it which you always want to avoid because you risk pushing it further down.

      @ElsasWholesomeLife  3 года назад

      No, I explained in a Q&A when I was pregnant that we will raise Bowie mostly plant based / vegetarian, but will introduce all common allergens to him early on as well.

      @@ElsasWholesomeLife oh that’s so cool! so will you like slowly transition him into being plantbased when he’s a bit older? and he will never eat meat? He going to be so healthy and cute! xx

      yeah and i’ll ask him what he wants to eat when he’s older 😊 but essentially we cook plant based at home so naturally he will eat that way growing up 😊

    Looks like your partner is pushing him by pushing the food into his mouth! I thought the baby was supposed to "lead"?? Looks like baby isn't ready!

      The baby is definitely ready, he is showing all the signs he is ready but it's definitely not baby lead weaning.

    Seems like the child is also under a lot of pressure. Like you sitting in front of him showing him what you want him to do and talking, yummying to him. Please future moms don't do that. Let your kid sit in the chair and while you have dinner like usual give your child something too. Let him explore the food and play with it while you go your regular dinner!
    Also - have milk after dinner, child will still relie on the milk. Food before one is just for fun!

      Nope, Emma Hubbard specifically has said to only give breast milk or formula milk before the solid meal not after. Please don't spread misinformation.

    Avocados ruin the environment so is good that some of us like it and others dont:)
