Two of my proto boys (no art exists of them as of yet) were blank templates awaiting programming and modification on a commandeered shipping craft that fell out and landed in a scrapyard. There they were found by a young roboticist girl who fixed them up and basically “made” them who they were. It’s possible for a protogen to have a good life despite the seemingly dark circumstances of their birth.

One thing I still don't understand is why they grow limbs in the first place. I mean, if you are able to create a living creature in a lab (in mass production) it would only make sense that whoever creates them is capable of manipulating DNA or cells. Therefore they should be able to just manipulate the DNA or cells in a way that results in a limbless protogen.
Or did I just forget something in their Lore that explains it?

My fursona is actually an illegal protogen, in the sense that he doesn't follow the lore or design tropes at all. He was a shark up until age 26, when he got injured in a quite bizzare incident, crippling him. In order to un-cripple himself, he had another existing protogen use protogen hardware to augment his joints and eventually install the rest of the hardware such as the visor and chestplate later. Anyway after about a year he was basically just a protogen except he can take off his external equipment. After watching this video, he is now gearing up to infiltrate and destroy a protogen factory.
