    Up until about 20yrs ago, the optical comparator was the main inspection tool in one shop busy tool & die shop I worked at. We had a rather large Brown & Sharpe one. Almost like a booth with about a 36in dia screen. We also made go/no-go gages. In those days, we actually had to earn the titles of inspector and toolmaker!

    On the rocket lens blower, could you use an ultrasonic thickness gauge with a steel ball on the inside of the rubber sphere? This would be a very low cost method with very accurate measurements.
