A tip of the hat to you John. I have enjoyed making signs for years. Both metal and wood. I have wanted to get into CNC for signage. Your video is very encouraging. Thank you.
You are the best!!!. Yesterday I wanted to make a "carved" door for my office but I did not know how to do more than 2D using sketchup, now I know thanks to you!!!.
Lovely project. On the painting, you said not to soak with water. You've already sealed the MDF with shellac & 2 coats of spray paint. You've not cut through those, so the MDF is still sealed. Another hint, you can add approx 20% water to acrylic paint, makes it easier to brush on & wipe off excess.
Awesome project sir! Glad to have found your channel, My Shapeoko 3xxl will be here later in the week. Happy little trees lol (i was thinking the same thing).
Beautiful realization of the piece by a capable artist. Been looking for ideas to get my feet wet with inexpensive media like the MDF. Deviant art is also quite a score. Thanks PS. I saw your post and noted that he (Yukishiro-Yue ) eventually got back to you this past year in Sept :-) In case you were feeling a little slighted.....
From my experience with miniature painting, if you get some flow aid from the craft store, then add a little water with a few drops of the flow aid into the paint, it will flow into the recesses much more easily
Just bought the xxl and should have this week. Thank you so much for your videos, they have put me at ease a good bit. Where can we get the 2 piece box files and gig files?
The basic round box is here: www.dropbox.com/s/a4jracouoqntxaf/4_point_2_inch_round_box.c2d.zip?dl=0 and the lizard box is here: www.dropbox.com/s/783ut9gzlp6s7u1/Lizard%20Box.zip?dl=0 I also have a few things on cut Rocket under the jeclark account.
I have not made a video on adding bits (it's planned as part of a getting started video I am working on). The basics are: When you create a tool path, you should see an edit button below the currently selected bit. On the next window you should see either "Change Tool" (current version) or "Edit Library" (Older versions). This is where you can edit and add new bits. The new version is a little more confusing as you need to add a new library, expand the library and then right click on the library and select New Tool. This is in no way intuitive.
Intersting.. I use V-carve so there is NO need for inkscape. Its fareasier to use and has finer control on the toolpathing. The downside is its NOT free. From $350 to $700 depending what version you get.. WELL wrth every penny and it dont take long to pay for it by the time saved alone to do things.
I noticed your version or carbide is not showing the estimated cut time how accurate is that? I did a version and it told me the cut time was 17 hours!
The video is about a year and a half old, so my version of Carbide motion was pretty old. I seem to remember it taking about 6 or 8 hours to carve. Two things to check on your file: In the settings, you can drop the retract height down to about 2mm for MDF. Secondly, you can increase the plunge rate when you set the tool path. The big thing with a carve like this is the number of times the spindle must raise and lower. Let's say it takes 3 seconds to drop the spindle with your original settings, if you are making 10 plunges, it's not a problem time wise. However, this design makes almost 7000 plunges and at 3 seconds per, that's about 6 hours of waving your bit in the air. :) Does that make sense?
@@johnearlclark Hi John, I downloaded a phone holder design from cutrocket, tried to change the text and set up a v carve but it is giving me an empty toolpath any ideas?
@@johnearlclark John, I use a couple different programs to generate g code and send it with UGS. I have noticed that the g code I run from carbide create runs much slower than other programs I use. Can you recommend speed and feeds for carving wood? MDF, pine mostly
This was a good video. Nice examples. Thank you

Great appreciate your sharing, I have learned a lot from this. I am totally new and just start to study on this.

Too Cool! This single project was the tipping point for me -- now I'm going to have to add a Shapeoko to my shop. Thank you/drat you :-) Clyde
The first hit is always free. Welcome to the rabbit hole. :-)
Thank you for taking the time to share great work
Great job sir! Thank you for explaining everything, being a newbie to shapeoko, your video was very helpful!
Great video! Thank you for sharing! I’m new to the CNC world and I got some good info from this video!

Really nice project!
Thats awesome.
Beautiful!!

I had forgotten all about flow aid. I might give that a try on my next one. Thanks!
Very nice
Super cool beautyful

Do you have a video on how to add end mills to carbide or can you only use the ones listed?

I like the way you think. :)
👍✔💯
Just curious. How long did it take for your computer to create the toolpath in Carbide Create?
Creating the toolpath was just a minute or two. The carve was about 4 hours I think.
Nice work John. Any chance uploading the files?. Cheers.
The Carbide Create file is posted here: www.dropbox.com/s/sa7nvqiomt3udsi/Mystic%20Circle.c2d.zip?dl=0

What program did you do the project in ? 5:14
Carbide Create. It's what comes with the shapeoko.
