I think it’s logically hard for us to understand, because we are not raised in that echelon of society, but if you’re wondering about why The Targaryens did it to each other, all you have to do is look into our own world history and see all the in-fighting that happens to gain power for a throne. Just look at every royal family in the world, they were all eventually brought down by this idea of “the birthright is mine and therefore it’s more important than anything else” - it’s always about power - it is in the show, and it is in real life. GRRM fashioned his world to mirror a lot of old English history so even if you just look at the War of the Roses and all that mess, cousins and siblings and all fighting each other, royalty makes people want to strive for absolute power. That has always been the sad case, unfortunately
Even now in society, you see it with rich families. If they have money and power, they hold onto it even if it means fighting with each other.
It’s an unfortunate part of human existence, that we all desire power and control, I mean this is why when you’re a little kid, if your parents shared your toys with a sibling, you feel cheated and you get mad and you want it bad even though you can have it back later and you’re all family. It’s that selfish mentality but multiplied by 10000 because it’s now about land and real power and respect.

Martin goes into greater detail on this story in the recent Fire And Blood book (the history of the first hundred and fifty years of the Targaryen dynasty). There's plenty of interesting little details and stories of side characters that make for really interesting reading... I kind of hope that the Dance of Dragons is one of the prequel series in development by HBO. That book also explains a little further some of the tension between the two respective branches of the Targaryen family leading into the Dance as well... why there was enough of a tension between the two factions and dislike between cousins and half-siblings and such that conflict and, ultimately, violence, was inevitable.

Bit late to this comment, but in The House of the Dragon, isn't one of the confirmed storylines the Dance?

Even if just a few young dragons survived the Targaryens would have been able to avoid collapsing years down the road with Robert's rebellion and such. Their house really was powered by the fact that there not yet existed weapons capable of out matching a dragon other then harpoons which are hard to produce in large enough numbers to make a difference on the battlefield. All that power built up over the years from building up an entire fleet of dragons gone in one quick war.

I still wish the history that they'd chosen for the spinoff once GoT is over was this one. There's so much that could be done with this war and it would be *fierce*

I guess some people in the targaryan family are just crazy about something, there's always a Targaryan that is good and bad.. I think some character quoted about Targaryans being either the head or the tails of a coin some quote like that

This isn't just a thing with the Targaryens. Every family in Westeros and even medieval royal families had good and bad individuals. Even the Starks.

just so you know they skipped end of the war which included tully and arryns vs king aegon forces on king's road which ended green's army as they were annhilated by the still fresh army of arryn and tullys. to make matters worse starks had finally decided to join the war making it three fresh armies against an army numbered few hundreds and no dragons which led to aegon the second wanting aegon the third's ear to be cut off and sent to the tullys as warning only for colrys valeryon to turn on him and kill his guards and sent peace terms to lannisters, reach and storms land while aegon the second got poisoned by someone which led to the greatest stark moment in targeryen era the hour of the wolves

I dont have any problem admitting I only watch GoT vids. If I had a better connection, I would stream other series. I only watch GoT through my friends. Its no good watching a reaction if I have never seen the other shows you are doing.
