In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm remembering the way we felt and processed the 9/11 attacks that happened 23 years ago. To do this, I'm watching and listening Bruce Springsteen's emotional and raw performance of My City of Ruins, broadcast around the world just 10 days after the attack. In times like this, music can be cathartic and healing. And, after all these years, performances like this really bring me back. I hope this episode lifts you up as it did me while I was filming it.

Thanks for doing this, Doug. Very moving. I remember exactly where I was when I watched this live and as a lifelong Springsteen fan it touched me deeply and I started incorporating this song into my own performances.
Oct 22, my wife and I had the honour of being in NYC for the first time. And the most important thing we wanted to do, was to pay our respects at the WTC 9/11 memorial. And to visit the memorial museum. It was a cold, windy, very wet day - the end of a hurricane. But one of the most atmospheric and moving days of our lives. We were so glad we made that pilgrimage.
What made me tear up uncontrollably, was seeing the names of all the firefighters listed on the wonderful, understated memorial. I could not stop crying.
The memorial, and the museum, are such a credit to the people of NYC and to the USA. And what better music, by one of America's greatest poets, to remember that awful day by? Thanks Doug.
"My City's in Ruins". But it rose again.
Did you know that "live scenes from New York" by Dream Theater was released on that day and instantly pulled from all shelves nationwide?
Wonderful accompaniment
I remember watching this live as well. This song and Wyclef Jean's rendition of The Redemption Song were the highlights.
thank you Doug. such a stirring song and rendition. Sometimes the simplicity adds to the impact of a powerful song.
Teared up when I watched this. Chills every time I hear it still.
Well done Doug. Honest and empathetic without being overly sentimental or mawkish. Also identified with your way of connecting with a song by playing with it (as opposed to playing along with it). I'm in the UK and it's bitter sweet that it takes a tragedy of such proportions to unite souls across oceans. I could have predicted that Springsteen would have captured the moment.
Thanks for introducing me to that song.
You’re welcome Rachel! I hope you’re well.
@@Doug.HelveringHi Doug, I have something that will shock you a bit. A video from a Rush album released September 8, 1987. At least a dozen things in Hold Your Fire are details of what happened on 9/11/2001.

One of my favorite songs. I used to listen to this and Wyclef’s version of Redemption Song (giving a shout out to Brooklyn) all the time.
A beautiful tribute to 9/11, welI done. I don't think that I had seen it before. Nice job with the piano accompaniment Doug.
Never forget!❤
@bellies1000 I agree.
Now we need a reaction to the Live in Barcelona full band version! Or New York City Serenade from Rome!
I am an atheist, but this song is the closest I get to a religious experience. For the duration of the song, I'm a believer...
I'd love to see you do a review of "Blood on the Rooftops" by Genesis.
Hi Doug,
When Bruce started “My City of Ruins”, I thought (incorrectly) he had written it in response to the attacks. I thought “Will ALL these songs be brand new?”
The words and image of “Standing Tall” came to me. I picked up pen and pad. Before the concert ended, here’s what I had written.
STANDING TALL
Silver sentries stand in silence
Heedless of the coming violence
One minute shining, the next in flames
Our nation’s horror, the whole world’s shame
In our minds, you’re still standing tall
Unnamed heroes answered the call
With no thought for self, they gave all
To protect and serve, to fight the fire
The towers of trade were your funeral pyre
In our hearts, you’re still standing tall
Land of liberty, pilgrims’ pride
By a demon’s hand, thousands died
Despised by many, understood by none
Offering freedom to everyone
In our eyes, you’re still standing tall
Soldiers and sailors, by land, sea and air
Poised to strike at the madman’s lair
Fighting halfway around the world
Keeping freedom’s flag unfurled
May you ever be standing tall

23 years. Time flies by.
Interesting fact. I just submitted my fan favorite from this event. Great minds 🤘🙏
Special moment and song.
You need to listen to Wintersun's Time albums. They just completed it days ago and now is the perfect time to do listen to those masterpieces.
Nice playing Doug 😢
God bless you,Dougy & Megan, stay strong, Peace and Love ✌️✨💫
bravo
Never heard this before but almost had me in tears. Great song. New York Minute by Don Henley always makes me think of 9/11 too.
Don Henley and Glen Frey wrote There's a Hole in the World Tonight for the Eagles about 9/11.
Beautiful tribute. I know I'm two weeks and sum late, but I have a suggestion for next year's 9/11. There's this song called "Have You Forgotten?" written about the attack, calling for people not to forget that day.
A slightly angrier and maybe a little bit more comedic take might be "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue".
They're very different songs, but they're both very specific to that attack. Just...suggestion fodder for 9/11 episodes in future years. I have faith you'll be doing this for a while yet.
I would listen to "Jesus etc" from Wilco. While it was technically written before that fateful day, it seems almost prophecy.
Doug please I beg of you. Grace the audience with your listen of Pink Floyd’s You’ve Gotta be Crazy. It was recorded live at Wembley in 1974 as the working version of “Dogs”. Behind Shine On… it’s their most moving song. Powerful stuff.
Thanks!
Thanks for this.
Gteest somg. Nice kruys.
You should definitely listen to some early Springsteen - first four albums are masterpieces, and more...
Another song that wasn't written in respect to 9/11, but that has always reminded me of it, if you listen to the whole song, is Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap. Almost every lyric can be attributed to some aspect of being a kid that grew up when it happened.
A song that I think Was written in regard to that day is Skylines and Turnstiles by My Chemical Romance. It was one of their first songs they released.
As the poet and member of the Portuguese Parliament, Natália de Oliveira Correia, would say:
"I believe in angels that walk the world
I believe in the goddess with diamond eyes
I believe in lunar loves with piano in the background
I believe in legends, in fairies, in Atlanteans
I believe in a missing, more fruitful ingenuity
to harmonize the dissonant parts
I believe that everything is eternal in a second
I believe in a future heaven that was before
I believe in the gods of a purer astral
in the humble flower that leans against the wall
I believe in the flesh that bewitches the afterlife
I believe in the incredible, in the amazing things
in the occupation of the world by roses
I believe that love has wings of gold. amen."
These victims were once again the silent heroes of Democracy giving their lives for it.
Maybe not completely appropriate considering but I would love to hear you talk about “smile bomb” the opening to the anime Yu-Yu Hakusho the English lyrics were made and translated to be as close as possible to the original Japanese lyrics so either language version is good but also just the music in general is good
for as much as I dont agree with Springsteen on a lot of things, I remember watching this performance and for what its worth... it was the song that left the biggest impression on me all night.
