In this #masterpiecefriday edition of #thedailydoug, I'm analyzing the classic song Goobye Yellow Brick Road from Elton John and Bernie Taupin and then comparing/contrasting the original with the symphonic cover version performed by Sara Bareilles. It's one of the great songs with beautiful melody and lyrical metaphor...and these performances are not to be missed!

Wow. Thank you for bringing this amazing cover to light! Delightful. Magnificent.
Sara absolutely owned that cover. Elton would eventually team up with her on a duet, so he clearly appreciated.
Guys, you have to watch this. One of the very best covers I have heard in many a day. Just different enough to make it really interesting, without in any way spoiling or detracting from the original. Instead, adds to it. And WHAT a voice she has!
Love, love, love how you discuss the chord progressions and structures in these classics, Doug! So insightful and inspiring! Thank you! 🙏
its not that important its just a song
I appreciate it also, wish I knew more about it
Anything written today is just a song, these songs like this has structure / brilliance and a meaning behind them.
@ but daily dougs diagnosis can be very misleading
yea doug is so mood lifting hes got such great vibes watching him explain and dissect the chords is very edifying
Watching your face exude immense joy made my day! I know that feeling well when discovering new music.
Thank you so much for this Dr. Doug!! I was completely unaware of this cover, and of Sara Bareilles. I am now enlightened, thanks to you 🙌
it's amazing how she's not obvious in moments of song we know by heart. It's an enhancement I couldn't expect. thank you for bringing it to all of us.
I always appreciate when a melancholy song makes me feel joy due to it's beauty. Sara really did a great job with delivering the same song with a different level of beauty.
Sara certainly does a great job in covering this classic song.
Whooo... I'm sitting here applauding to this wonderful cover of this beautiful song. Outstanding! Great analysis as always, Doug!
Great Analysis, Doug. Also love your piano playing!
Wow, Sara nailed this, not heard before, thank you Doug, awesome
Great Masterpiece Friday, Doug. Wonderful choice--I love both versions, and Sara really did justice to the original in her cover. Have a nice weekend. :)
Enjoyed. 68 so I went to see Elton many times before and after this huge LP / tour. Will watch more ... Le
David Bowle’s song Changes would be interesting for you. Some cool chord progressions you’d love.
Always enjoy your channel! Thanks
Nice one Doug.... and this time you got all the scale degrees! ;-)
Love seeing Elton on the channel. He is one of my fav artists as well!
I watched your video today and again delighted in your enthusiasm. I do connect with you, and I imagine you must be a wonderful friend to have.
You are a kind and very special person.
Greetings from Würzburg, Germany
Much love and appreciation, Thomas
It’s one of the best song covers I’ve heard. I also love the other version on YT (her live in Atlanta) where it’s even more pared back and just her on piano with no orchestral accompaniment. Haunting in places but hugely impressive.
The strings and echoey background harmonies are what I love about 70s music ❤
While I normally don't like remakes of great originals, I will tip my hat to Sara on this cover! She nailed it with her own flair. You go girl!
In your rundown of the other notable titles on the album, you forgot my favorite track off this great LP, "Harmony."
It's a tug-of-war love letter to his muse -- MUSIC. As, such it'll always endure.
sorry, forgot to add: Thanks for this excellent vid, and your feature of the wonderful rendition & performance by Sara B & the orchestra on PBS.
I saw Elton perform in Vegas several years ago and it was simply magical.
What a voice he had in the 70's.
This is a great song, Doug... My favorite, at least from an arrangement and production standpoint is "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" with that drag time section in the middle... It's also one of my favorite misheard lyrics: "Someone shaved my wife tonight, should have Nair-ed..." 😄
Thanks Doug!!!! Master Class 🔥🔥🔥
awesome job as usual. during that same performance sara did a duet with rufus wainwright on a song called she used to be mine. not saying to put it on your channel but if you chance i think it would be fun for you to watch it. it shows how great both of these performers are. great channel, love what you do.
I remember that in that point of time, I thought Elton released an album about every two weeks! 😸😸😸 I actually didn't APPRECIATE their BRILLIANCE back then! 🙀😸 It took me about 25 years, give or take 😸, to realize just HOW HARD it IS to do what they did!!!
The acapella group Straight No Chaser recently released a great cover of this as well. Such a great song!
Didn't want to like the cover, but it gave me genuine chills
"Returning to the plough" is a reference to the ancient Roman Cincinnatus.
Wow! 🎶
Great video
Since you’re doing Elton John, please do Joni Mitchell singing “I’m Still standing”. I love that one.
Elton performed this song a couple years ago when I saw him (his Farewell Tour)!
This reminds me of another pbs orchestral recording of Laufey, Dodie and Jacob Collier doing their version of Wild Mountain Thyme. Absolutely blew my mind the first time I heard it
Wow that's a great cover, never heard her before.
Im sorry that it took you this long. But glad you have found her.
Auntie Elton did this song in 2022 for sure. There's a video of the Performance here on youtube
I can highly recommend the Yola cover of this, it's my favourite version
You were right. That is a fabulouus ccover
My fave song of all time and SB’s version is a stunner ❤
Worked out a guitar version of Tiny Dancer once. Chords are amazing
Between 1975 and 1977, a group of anthropologists including Desmond Morris studied the history and spread of European gestures and found the rude version of the V-sign to be basically unknown outside the British Isles.
There's another version on RUclips she did in 2009 that might be even better, to my ears at least. Great talent.
20:05 Did anybody else think sing "When I was young" when Doug or Sara played those open 5ths?
Sara's voice is beautiful (reminds me of Karen Carpenter) and technically yes, improved on Elton's masterpiece. BUT we know the song so well already. If she picked this as an unknown song, we wouldn't be listening to it today. Elton and Bernie delivered this amazing song to the world and it still sounds great 50 years later.
Doug take a look at Sara Bareilles and Rufus Wainwright "She Used to Be Mine" from the same PBS show. Maybe one for a future episode?
Doug, this arrangement started with Sara Bareilles and her piano alone on stage. The performance is more moving than this one. You have to believe me. The orchestra transforms this very personal confession into an anthem. The solo version may be the very best vocal performance ever by Sara Bareilles too. This is the one you want: 11 years ago, alone on stage in Atlanta: ruclips.net/video/Ozd2ja7mAgM/видео.html. This orchestral version is okay, but you want the solo version, trust me. It's like the Eva Cassidy "Over the Rainbow." Some live performances are just magic.
Thank you for pointing this out to me. Absolutely amazing.
Of course Elton, but thank you so much for the Sarah version... 👍
am not crying, you're crying
noticed the intro he plays down a scale once he starts to sing he goes up
"Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" is also worth exploring ...
You should listen to more king gizzard the lizard wizard , Head on/Pill is one of my favorites
Try listening to Darkest Hour Veritas, Aequitas that is a good instrumental
Well, DT did cover for this song too 😅
ELTON & BERNIE'S MASTERPIECE
You should do this same format of reaction with Jane by the Jefferson Starship and then covered recently by Dino Jelusick/Mike Portnoy/Joel Hoekstra. It's not often a cover surpasses the original, especially a big hit like Jane.
You should really check out the ULTRAKILL soundtrack, tracks like Order and Tenebre Rosso Sangue are masterpieces imo
Elton said he loved her version and he said it was a hard song to do.
Watching this video with an HD600 lets you really join Doug on the journey haha
NELSON NED, HELENA MEIRELES(guaxo), TICOÃS (lamento das águas)...(BR)
You’ve got to be crazy by Pink Floyd, early version of dogs, please Doug, I beg of you
you should react to the city must survive
wrabel the village trans chours need be listened to as well as Ditzy Spells - Foreign Airports
hey you should check out Five Magics by Megadeth
Like you when I saw this vid come out a week or so before the airing I was stunned by how well Sara twisted this song into her own. A song I already love to death since it came out. I sure hope PBS survives a Trump presidency.
Hi Doug. Best, intimate, wonderful version, to me:
ruclips.net/video/Ozd2ja7mAgM/видео.html
Masterpiece.
Sir Elton John said: "I was so blown away by the version of Yellow Brick Road. I've never heard anyone sing one of my songs like that ever. I can't thank you enough, giving your time and blowing my mind with that version. Because when someone sings your songs they usually copy you and she made it her own. That's brilliant--it's a hard song."
Hello reactiond los jaivas song la poderosa muerte rn macchu picchu
PLS DO APEIROPHOBIA BY ANIMALS AS LEADERS
React to Moon river by jacob collier
You should really do people=shit live drum cam by slipknot for a metal Monday. It won’t disappoint
This is back when Elton was really very good.
Sara 5 Eva!
It's so strange to see Doug being used as a 'meme' at 4:10 in this video: ruclips.net/video/gU2isWn1X8I/видео.htmlsi=yw-CGcw1iSqN2r2L
Too bad the PBS upload has been removed from youtube
Why, oh why, oh why do people do this? I have nothing against Sara but it’s incredibly rare that some-one can do a better version of the original, especially when it’s a timeless classic like this song (Morten Harket singing Bridge Over Troubled Water comes to mind as a rare exception). So why bother? The analogy is like renting a car online. And when you show up they tell you that they don’t have what you ordered but can offer you either a Nissan Versa or a BMW 3 instead for the same price. Who in their right mind would ever choose the Nissan? I sure wouldn’t, just like I’d never listen to Sara’s version instead of Elton’s version.
She sang it well but avoiding the right chords was a mistake.
That new intro theme is terrible
its just a song chords are just nothing that important
