Question, what is a good canon printer to learn about fine art printing for photography, i was looking at the pro-1000 but something tells me that is not for a newbie, maybe the pro-300?

The Pro-2000/2100/2600 progression looks similar to the previous generation. I suspect the next change will be an all new print head, ink system [maybe] and a chassis redesign, as when the pro-2000 appeared.

For what it's worth in the speculation department, Canon USA just replaced my 2016 Pro 1000 after I found it leaking ink out the bottom of the printer. This unit also has the issue of not being able to eject the cartridges when replacing ink. Had to use needle nose pliers to remove them. Make of that what you will. Hi Keith,
Do you think, based on your thoughts about the Canon Pro 1000. Do you think the Cano Pro 300 will also see an upgrade? Is it the only other Image Prograf printer that hasn't got newly updated along with the Pro 1000? Or do you think they'll leave that one as-is for a while as came out in 2020 (as opposed to 2015 Pro 1000, or does that not matter as wasn't the 1000 meant to upgrade in 2020 so maybe they'll just do both together?).
I want to get a printer for printing art prints mostly. I'm torn between these 2 (Pro 300 and 1000) and the Epson ET 8550 (but I've heard this has roller mark issues? though it's significantly better on ink cost it seems). Would so love your thoughts!

Thanks for your thoughts on this. My Pro 1000 - unrepairable. Canon wouldn't touch it and I could not find anyone local-ish to even try. Certainly a new model being more repairable would be great. And it's not asking much! Allowing a printer head swap in a dormant machine is an easy request. I don't print much (why my printer ultimately failed) but I do love using it when i do. Sensational quality, exactly as it looks on screen, etc.. But since I'm in no rush I think i'll wait for a new model. Hopefully it's this year, as you said. Thanks for your insight!

I've had a PRO-1000 since 2017 and the head was completely dead when I tried to use it for the first time after being dormant for a few years. I couldn't even be sure everything would work if I replaced the head. I noticed that a whole new printer cost the same as a head and a full set of ink, so I bought one but didn't unpack anything except the new head which I popped into the old printer which worked perfectly. Now I've got the new printer as a standby in case I ever need it, plus a full set of ink which I would have needed to buy eventually anyway. If there had been a new PRO-1600 available I'm sure I would have gone for that but I'm pretty happy with how it worked out.

I'm disinclined to say the P900 is 'worse' to any significant degree in terms of actual ink used - total costs for ink vary though with region and local supply situations.
I'm minded to suggest that the proportion used for cleaning as compared to total ink used can be a noticeably higher on a PRO-1000 if you don't use it a lot. That's based on just a few observations from people who kept records of ink use over longer periods. Not data I have access to, in order to evaluate methodologies and other factors, so an opinion at best ;-)
The uncertainty in such figures, and people's desire for simple answers is one reason I have never ever expressed conclusions for total ink costs in my reviews.

Great news!!! This new inkset may allow prints to be framed without requiring lacquer spraying or glass covering! "Scratch resistant" may be one of the reasons for the increased longevity, besides the better yellow ink that you mentioned. A tougher surface should hold up better when unprotected.
It also has the chroma optimizer that Epson doesn't have, which will help protect the entire print, including the paper that gets no ink (whites).
I really like the look of sprayed prints without glass, but the acrylic spray is nasty and unhealthy to apply. This inkset may require neither, but of course, owners of the prints would have to take care to not use liquid when cleaning, except when absolutely necessary, and then only a tiny bit, briefly. Someone should test this.
I'm now very happy that I let my Epson 9600, 24 inch printer die, when the yellow ink failed nozzle cleanings.
It's interesting that yellow ink was the longevity weakness of Epson's HDR inkset too, which they fixed with their last printer upgrade. But they don't have the chroma optimizer, and don't claim more scratch resistance.
This inkset could be a dream-come-true, game changer!

@@KeithCooper Regarding prints to be somewhat more durable to possibly be framed without glass or spray coating, Bryan Carnathan at The Digital Picture said in his news announcement: "The new ink set can also work to help produce and *preserve* prints as a *crystalline wax* has been added to the ink, giving the printed surface better resistance to abrasion-caused scratches on glossy and semi-glossy media."
Regarding chroma optimizer, I'm thinking that it's a layer of clear ink applied to the paper that would help keep ozone from directly hitting it in the white areas that receive no ink otherwise (as in Epson). It's gotta help at least a little bit, and maybe would make it easier to clean too.
Maybe it could help dust from getting imbedded in the paper.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  4 месяца назад +2

Yes - straight from the press info ;-)
All these things obviously do help a bit - just that marketing materials are written for people to imagine that 'bit' as rather more significant than it might turn out to be.
Until I get a printer to test, I read the press info and related copy with half an eye as to spotting when parts are 'repurposed'. If enough outlets print info from or based on your press info, the proportion of people ingesting it rises...
