@42:12 the Archietect name was Watson Fothergill. He was my uncle. I am John Fothergill.
Also thank you from Canada. My grandfather was born in Nottingham. I never met him as he died when my dad was 16, but he was a coal miner here in Canada, and now I know why. I didn't know coal mining was a major industry in Nottingham. Thanks Ian!
So glad we could share this connection with you, DonnaLynn!
Thoroughly enjoyed that trip. And the knowledge. Memorable. Thank you...x
My grandfather’s family hailed from Sherwood Forest!! The last name being Taylor, from years ago
The exchange is a beautiful.building & especially so at Christmas with the Christmas tree & decorations. Looks so elegant.
My hometown I used to work in the lace market can't believe how much its changed over the years great tour
Thank you from Canada. Enjoyed our walk and your talk. Very enjoyable.
Glad you found our channel, Wendy!
My hometown. Been a long time since I've been, a lot has changed. I miss it a bit.
Come back for a visit!
You not missing much. There is always stabbings going on in Nottingham lately. Someone few weeks ago was stabbed in the street in town. And someone not long before that stabbed to death also outside Victoria center. It has got worse lately. The last five yrs the locals have become very angry and there alot of homeless people and people with mental health problems. The youth are always looking for trouble and the men in Nottingham seem to stare and gloat at women. It is becoming worse and employment and things are now on low. I don't recommend anyone living in notts. There better places in England to live
My home town too. Born in Nottingham City hospital. Pity about the mess they’ve made of the Victoria Station site.Whoever designed that centre should be gaoled.
Most of this is not true.
Whilst yes there are better places to live, it’s most definitely nowhere near being a bad place to live!
This is coming from someone who was raised here but also lucky enough to have lived in Italy for many years too and have therefore seen the best of both worlds.
There have been a few stabbings lately but 99% of the time it’s youth that have “beef” and they’re not random attacks. I feel very safe here.
Much love :)
Omg such an awesome looking place 😮😮😀😀
Iwas born in nottingham as was my ancestors but left when iwas 18 i miss it so much Thankyou so much
Glad we could take you back there virtually, Sozan!
Notts Forest are doing well once again. All good things come to those who wait ;)
Thank you for this. I’m from Nottingham and all my family are still there. Currently living in the US but can’t wait to return.
Nottingham is a city that is not big but has enough of everything. Just the right size. Not having the noise, pollution and crimes associated with bigger cities yet doesn’t feel like abandoned or neglected like some small cities are. It has a very strategic location being in the midlands, not so far from London and not so far from the North. If only some companies in Birmingham or London could move their headquarters in Nottingham, it could be as promising as Manchester.
Hello 👋 Ian,I'm Teresa B. From Port Hueneme, CA.

Ian does such a wonderful tour! It was truly like being there! BTW I'm in Pennsylvania USA
Wonderful tour, thank you. Grateful for what remains and outraged at what has been lost.
Good insight of my home city
Nottingham is a nice place to visit and has some beautiful parks and the River Trent along the embankment to Trent Bridge. If I'm totally honest, it is not as good as it used to be back in the 80s and 90s but still good. It is a city that is worth visiting for a day trip though
If you re-do the walk in Nottingham Lace Market again the Adam's Building had a chapel on the lowest floor you can see from the street the windows were stained glass and all employees had to attend a prayer meeting there before they started work. Also the Broadway area was more famous for been the heart of "Costume and Mantle" high class ladies fashion wear and most London fashion Houses and Department stores had associated firms there, you could regularly see racks of clothing been transferred from one company to another. I know about this as my father ran one of the companies.
Keep up the good work.
Absolutely fantastic, the best history video of Nottm I have ever seen 👍
Very historical n important narration Thanks

I worked in lace making as a ‘hand-frame knitter’ in Hucknall and later as a ‘cutter’ on Short Hill in the Lace Market. This is a great illustration of my favourite city. 👏🏻
So glad you enjoyed it, Patrick!
Good to see you again Ian. Thanks for yet another wonderful video. I enjoyed learning about the history and loved hearing the bell ring. You did a Great job!
Absolutely loved this tour, you are amazing and presented a very important noted history of Nottingham City Centre. My daughter will love this and just eat it up. Thank you for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed this!
Hi Ian, thank you for telling me a fair few things about the town I didn’t know.. but I’m surprised you stood outside The Broadway without mentioning that the building behind the new glass facade was the Methodist chapel William Booth - founder of The Salvation Army attended while a child growing up in Sneinton. It’s a shame you missed my favourite Fothergill building as well, his offices are a hidden gem, and were literally 20 yards away from where you started, up on George Street. Probably a tale for mis-behaving small children, but when I was little and Shire Hall was still a courthouse, my mother used to point to a couple of square holes cut into the steps and filled with small blocks of stone, and tell me that they were the post holes for the gibbet when public executions were held there.
🕊️Good Evening!🍵

I'm from Nottingham and left some years ago now living in Cornwall just a few miles off Lands End.
My childhood hometown , 💕now residing in Malta
Glad we could bring you home virtually, AC!
Ian thank you your tour brought back many memories. I remember the original Paul Smith shop off Bridal gate , meeting Paul in the 1970’s and buying a suede harlequin jacket. Also in the Trip To Jerusalem we used to play a medieval game in one of the rooms where you had a bulls ring on a chain and you had to get it on to a bulls horn on the wall. Yes , you were correct about Boots , I also worked out at Beeston. Appreciated the nice pace of your talking and walking. Thank you . Paul. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
correct
So glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for sharing your stories!
The buildings are very nice!!
Thank you from an avid viewer in Australia ☺️

Tremendous! As a Nottingham man there is lots I didn't know, Very informative!
We love it when the locals give their approval, Andy! Thank you for watching.
So enjoyed this city of Nottingham tour. You would have to have lived in a cave (pardon the pun) to have not heard of the legend of Robin Hood. Love the architecture. The buildings are just beautiful.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for your guide. It’s a good combination of pictures and explanations and it’s full of details. I like your video

Thank You for posting this video!!! I enjoyed it great Job Sir
My hometown. You did miss a few other gems on your walk. The Arboretum Park, the Park tunnel cave and area near The Theatre Royal including the Nottingham Trent Buildings. But a good walk nevertheless.
Love it
Thanks!
Well done. Enjoyed very very much. 🇺🇸
Glad you liked this one, Janice!
Very interesting video. I had a penfriend in Nottingham fifty years ago and I used to go there during the holidays. Nottingham changed a lot (or I changed a lot!) and I didn't know most of the facts you speak about. And I understand rather well your pronounciation, how I imagine perfect english is. You are the best example for me to improve my english (I'm french).Thank you so much .

My hometown. Born & bred ❤️❤️❤️
Custom who go to Brewery restaurants are not ordinary working class beer lovers, they're loving the fact that they have found what they think is the best beer.
Great video of my hometown. I’m familiar with the all the places but not all the history that links it. I’m 38, I used to meet my friends at the left lion 🙂
Didn't we all, I used to just say " meet you at the lions" the old water fountains that sometimes had bubbles galore! Market Square looks so different now!
@@somewhereoverthere.9373I don't like how it looks now. Can remember the fountains full of bubbles on New Year's Eve. Happy days😁
Excellent tour. Thank you.
So incredible
Thanks for watching, Ellen!
Fasanating thanks

Ian , thanks for this informative description of my home city. If I may offer a little trivia to complement your encyclopedic knowledge; at 34.50 just past the Boots store is the former Alliance & Leicester Building Society branch which I had the privilege of developing on their behalf c.1990. Working with Notingham-based architects Crampin & Pring we needed to make a statement as the building turned the corner from Pelham St on to Clumber St. This was in the heady days of Notts Cricket club and their successes, so what better way to celebrate this than to create a cricket bat feature in glass! It also recognises the tradition of bat manufacturing in the city by Messrs Gunn & Moore.
Thanks for sharing, Peter!
Lovely. Born and bred Londoner. UK
Ok
Honestly I have lived in Nottingham for 16 years because I was born in Scarborough and some of there places I have never seen before so mate thank you for making this video I am definitely going to subscribe to you your voice is a brilliant for a tour guide
We love it when we get the locals stamp of approval. Thank you for watching!
Love this, being a Nottingham lass.
I do wonder what the philanthropist, Jesse Boot, who gifted so much land, and recreation areas to the people of Nottingham, would think of his stores today? They are definitely set up as profit makers, rather than to help the less well off in society.
Nice video
This is beautiful. It appears that a mud flood effected the area. Look at the partly covered windows or doors at the very bottom of the buildings. I believe they were refounded in the late 1800s and are alot older.
This was great! I have lived in the city centre for many years and there was so many things I didn’t know until watching this today. You knowledge of history is very impressive. Do you know where the date of 1189 on the Trip originated from, if it’s not the case?
We love it when locals enjoy the content! Thank you for watching and commenting :)
Great video!
Glad you liked this, Jimmy!

Good Video. being pedantic there is a difference between a pub and an inn. so might be oldest inn
We love a bet of pedantry now and again ;)

Shame you left out one of Nottinghams most Famous events , The plaques depicting the beggining of the English Civil war on Standard Hill August 22nd 1642 By the raising of Charles 1st Standard.
The Smiths on tour
That former Church being repurposed into a restaurant and bar? Cannot help but think what a total repurpose: from gathering at the bar of One God to gathering at a totally different bar.
Shane Meadows was NOT born in Nottingham. He was born in Uttoxeter in Staffordshire, as was Adam Peaty the olympic swimmer. Please don't deny this town of famous sons.
Who built all that without power tools, impossible
Concrete jungle no trees whatsoever
Best known as shottingham or shitham or derby dumping ground or stabbingham
Thanks for reminding me why I moved to another country. lol
Derby is an utter hole in the ground.
Snottingham, the Castles not even the original. Booooooooo just ruined my enjoyment of your video. Robin Hood was real!
