2024 Homeless Count: Palm Beach County sees 15% rise in people experiencing homelessness

People can be seen stretched out on sidewalks or rolling cluttered grocery carts down the streets of Downtown West Palm Beach. In Riviera Beach, residents showed us where they say many of the homeless go to sleep.
“Mostly inside of those hedges and those little cuts there. And right behind the little wall,” Denise Smith-Barnes, a Riviera Beach resident, said.
Palm Beach County has been battling what appears to be a growing issue, a homeless crisis. It seems like there are more and more people on our streets every day lying on public benches and leaving trash on our sidewalks. But have things really gotten worse?
Palm Beach County Community Services has been reviewing the unofficial results of this year’s Point-In-Time count, where volunteers and officers tallied more than 2,100 homeless individuals in Palm Beach County. That’s nearly 300 more than the roughly 1,800 counted in 2023.
