Johnny is one of the kindest, caring and most down to earth guys you could ever wish to meet. He emanates the good about music and transmits an emotion through those strings that I think is unsurpassable.
I have to say that I have been a Brent Mason fan for many many years... I love Doug Seven stuff, Vince Gill, Steve Wariner, Chet Atkins, Brad Paisley, and certainly a little Keith Urban, and old school Albert Lee but this guy (Johnny Hiland) is truly incredible. I am definitely a big fan. I sure do love music and I thank God for the gift that it is and how it transcends style, age, gender, ethnicity, and social status. It simply goes from your ears, to your heart! Thank God for music, and thank God for RUclips that can be used to enjoy such sweet sounds! Thanks for the post!
Whoa!! That was like an encyclopedia of genius guitar! Go Johnny! I like any vid he's in. I will say that there's something special about hearing somebody that good just ripping in a relaxed setting.
This guy is an enigma. I have never heard him play one sour note. He plays so naturally and smoothly. I was never near his level of playing, and then in 2018 I was diagnosed with MS. I had a treatment in Moscow in 2020 to stop the progression of the disease. Since then I have not gotten worse, in fact a bit better - I can still walk albeit with a cane or walker. If I keep exercising my legs I might even get much better. But I still have stiffness in my hands which has fucked up my guitar playing, even simple stuff. So when I hear Mr. Hiland play guitar I feel like quitting guitar forever and never look back. Too painful. Before the MS, I was starting to play some jazz chord melody standards. I was going to work on increasing the speed of my phrasing. But that's a pipe dream now. I have a Ibanez Artist Super Edition AR 300 1986 made in Japan, Violin Finish. It's a beautiful instrument - a work of art and it sounds incredible too. It plays like butter, super straight neck, perfect intonation and she stays in tune. It's a pity that all I can do is think about how nice it would've been to play it at least the way I did before the stiff hands. This instrument appreciates in value every month it seems. The highest retail $$ I've seen it on the internet for recently is $3,400.00 In then years it will be worth $10,000.00 easy. But for me it's about playing, not the money.
I saw Johnny back in 2000 in Buckdancer's Choice music store in Portland ME, just sitting on a stool with some acoustic guitar ripping out one killer bluegrass lick after another, after another, after another etc... Kinda got this sense he was blind. Just stood there in shock as he gave me the greatest guitar performance I'd ever seen still to this day! This is before he starting gaining worldwide notariety as one of the greatest guitar players on the planet! Saw him on local TV news a few years later on a segment called,"The Road to Nashville" and there he was just rippin' apart a tele! Went to go look him up on the web a few years later, because I could not forget how great this guy was, but I couldn't remember his name. Started googlin' something like "Awesome blind guitar player from Maine." Got a hold of his version of "That's Alright Mama" and spent about a week learning and trying to break down his leads. I only got so far, but what little I did learn I was able to apply to my own playing and it really helped me improve as a player. Thanks Johnny, you are the man!
Something like that... Although he is a great rock player too! There isn't much this guy can't play. And I know, I know Shawn was from different universe! :D
Love everything about this guy. That’s why I wish he would drop some weight so he can stay around longer. Please do something about it-you need to stick around a few more decades Johnny!!
One of the best guitar players of this generation
Honestly all these videos and I've still not heard him play 1 bad note. A living legend. Go Johnny!!
Johnny is one of the kindest, caring and most down to earth guys you could ever wish to meet. He emanates the good about music and transmits an emotion through those strings that I think is unsurpassable.
Well said.
MY ONLY WISH IS THAT SOMEONE WOULD STEP FORWARD AND HELP HIM LOSE WEIGHT TO SAVE HIS LIFE
Saw him play with Don Kelly. Completely blew me away.
This is one of my favorite demos from Johnny - just letting it fly...without a thought! What a Player! And his tone is so killer here - he's the King.
Hiland is just something else.......he is a guitar machine.......incredible ......great style and timing too
i heard that Johnny beat the devil in a guitar duel and then bought the devil a beer becaue thats how nice of a guy he is.
Actually, it isn't very hard to believe... even for an atheist! :D
lol

It's hard to believe I just learned about Johnny recently. He has got to be the best I can think of. Incredible.
His solos are like a great movie with a beginning a midde a great ending , Johnny strums the strings of our hearts with his complete phrasing
Great tone. With any guitar. Wonderfull playing!!! Love it!

Melody, feel, and speed at it’s finest.

I've just discovered you Johnny, you'r one of my favourites.
Super fluid and clean. Very inspiring to hear. Wow!
I'd love to see Johnny Hiland and Guthrie jam
+danboyguitar94 yes Danboy that would be worth watching
That much talent on a square mile would destroy the earth! :D
Johnny’s in another league.

Awesome picker.
I'm lost for words, that stuff he plays on the guitar with the runbar is just yes!
Love this man! What a player!
That's so fun to watch and listen to. He must have been at it for 18 hours a day for many years to get to that level.
Man, he really nails those pedal steel licks.
the guitars wewre all awesome. Jonny is awesome
Well from 4yrs to 100yrs,if you have ever picked up a guitar, this guy will show you what playin the guitar is all about, amazing.
If Chet were still alive, I'd wager Johnny would be recognized as a "certified guitar player".
For sure my friend.
For sure. There's players of the guitar and then there's guitar players. Mr Hiland is the latter.
I'm pretty sure they knew each other, when Johnny came to Nashville around 1996 Chet was still alive.
incredible touch
I think Johnny Hiland is my new hero!
Lee Smith Same here, just found out about him an hour ago....and I´m completely knocked off my socks....
It's great when you find new inspiration isn't it?!!
Lee Smith Absolutely!
+Lee Smith mine too !!
+Lee Smith Exactly what I was thinking. :)
You can see how comfortable he is with his own guitar at the end.
This guy is amazing. And not only in this video....
Johnny Hiland is the boss!
Awesome
Felipe Cavalcante for me the boss are the jazz musicians , Al Di Meola , Paco De Lucia , Django ... etc ....
He's such a great player
Greetings your #1 fan form Spain
That ES sounds amazing
He’s an amazing talent
He is an inspiration! ! Great to see how he lost weight.
3:35 - 3:43 WTF!! amazing
Incredible. Totally awe inspiring and just plain inspiring. Is there anything this living legend cant do with 6 strings?
Johnny Hiland can shred no problem - when he wants to. Incredible technique.
Great sound on the 335
There's just something about seeing Johnny with a Tele that just seems well.....right.
And something about him with the PRS seemed wrong. Nothing against PRS.
I'm writing Hiland in for president. Join me. We may be able to save this country.
man!youre ton is very cool!you are a real good player!!!!!
I think its safe to say that all the legendary guitar players, Chet atkins, Danny Gatton, SRV, etc came together and made Johnny
Just insane playing
This might be the most awesome solo guitar playing on You Tube, especially later on when he plays his Music Man. Incredible!
That hybrid picking.
Johnny is not human.
I've bought tons of Vinny's picks but I don't sound like that! LOL!
If I could have the opportunity to shuffle with this guy, for even just one song, I could die a completed man
I bet this guy doesn't even take his guitar strap off when he goes to bed.
Go Johnny!
He's ridiculously good
jesus....Hiland is an absolute monster on guitar. His economy of motion is awesome.
This Guy is a gift from God
Can someone tell me what is the neck pickup model on the ES-339?
Vinni,
Your arms are crossed! :D
Watta Monstah!
wo wo wo wo... what is that tone mod on the Tele????
Amazing 🤩
He’s aced EVERY style. All of them.
Never heard him do finger style before. Impressive!
I come back often for that lick at 1:30 and rewind it like a gazillion times. it's just such a slick lick dammit
Really a bad ass.
What is that at 1:18? I hear that song so much in his videos, is it an original or an actual Chet Atkins tune?
Mr Sandman.
this version stunned. Otherwise it's the first guy I can see playing in this style without mediator on the thumb. you know?
How did he play thumb style with a flat pick? He's off the charts!
Monster guitar player.
Music Man is a killer Guitar, awesome.
What song or part of a song does he start playing at 1:20?
Mr. Sandman
+William Winters are you sure?
Despite the insanity of his licks, it's the fast double stops at 2:05 that stun me. It's _so_ fucking cool.
Super play!
Johnny the Pickin'👑....👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍.....
Good lord is he a versatile player. Skill level 11
Only see him on RUclips. Wonder why?
Him and Johnny 5 need to have jam session
John is an over the top picker . I'm an over the top picker .that is why I can say this about John.
Dude is a beast!
The first guitar was an amazing rock tone in the hands of the guitar god johnny
Best in the known world !
OK I found my new Favorite guitar player
He’s a badass!!
Born A Bad Ass * Always a Bad Ass // He knows his sounds !
I am going to go into the back yard and set fire to my guitar!
Can Johnny come over and play?
Not bust on the guitars but...does it really matter which type of guitar Johnny is stroking?
Let me guess did you give him that Epiphone Hallow
That’s time well spent.
Shawn Lane of Country Music
Something like that... Although he is a great rock player too! There isn't much this guy can't play. And I know, I know Shawn was from different universe! :D
Anybody have the tabs for this? ;)
Like, Dang!
Does guitar have a GOAT (greatest of all time)? He'd qualify. His playing is incredible.
Love everything about this guy. That’s why I wish he would drop some weight so he can stay around longer. Please do something about it-you need to stick around a few more decades Johnny!!
Hell yeah!!!!!
What amp and pedal is being used?
Straight into an old tube amp, from what I remember
This guy could make a first act sound like a custom shop Gibson/Fender lol.
Jesse Gamble haha!! I love it
Stop playing so damn good, Johnny! The rest of us can’t keep up!!! On second thought, keep it up! You sound Grrrreat!
Not too bad for a kid from Woodland/Baileyville Maine!!!
whst amp is he playing with?
Nashville pickers are some of the very best.
Funny that he wears a watch.
Seriously though insane playing skills
He's so good that I bet he'd even make that Cube sound good
